  • A message to HVAC or other skilled trades apprentices explaining the importance of investing time into learning the trade OFF the clock. The skilled trades are difficult and undermanned, HVAC in particular. Taking the time as an apprentice to learn outside of work will greatly shorten the learning curve and help you stand out and advance in the HVAC industry.

I did 5 years of apprenticeship and one thing I learned from my instructors is that you never stop being a apprentice, we are always learning. But there's always a group that just likes to clock in and clock out and not care, like that you'll never succeed

I still learn something new every day.
    I sacrificed weekends, holidays, sleep
Just to learn our trade and it has afforded me a very good life.
Truest words “ Invest in yourself “
This trade has taken me to so many places where the average person doesn’t get to go.
Thanks for all of your videos

I agree that the employers responsibility is wage and safe working environment, however, it's also their responsibility to provide with the right training and journeyman who will teach you how to do the work, let you do the work and explain things to you.
I've seen to many companies that pigeon-hooe apprentices into repetitive countless installations, not really caring about training the apprentice and setting them up to succeed.
I've also seen many companies with a-hole journeyman who don't let apprentices do anything at all other than fetch tools and clean up.
I've had my ticket for quite a while now and I tell all the apprentices to push and ask to actually do the work, get third hands dirty and learn. Strive to learn.

The effort you put in is going to be equal to the reward you receive. Pay attention to details and always try to be the best at every aspect of your job. I finished school two years ago got in with a good family owned company for the first year of work I studied harder than I did in school and still do to this day but it paid off. I've been the lead installation tech for my company for a year now doing both commercial and residential. My goal was to be the best installation tech for my company and I'm constantly trying to find ways to improve and make my work look better. Make habits for yourself get a check list to make sure you do your job correctly, have pride in yourself and your work, and mostly just because you finish school does not mean you stop learning this trade is constantly evolving and if you do not grow with it you will struggle to be able to do your job well.

Good points here. I started at a school district after tech school. Learned ALOT through self teaching. Some stuff the hard way.
Used to get wiring diagrams and service manuals from manufacturers and online.
5 years ago, I got tired of the other guys I worked with not caring, not doing their job and bad attitudes.
I had the opportunity to go with the plumbers and pipefitters. I was 31 at the time.
Was scary, had a house, car payment, wife, and other obligations. Made the jump. Was put in as a third year apprentice, and turned journeyman 2016.
I still run across alot I dont know, sometimes I feel like I should already know being in this since 2007. However like it was stated your always going to run into something youve never seem, dont know or dont remember how it works.
Can be overwhelming but once you work through it and solve the issue not only is it a good feeling but you will be that much better next time.
Sorry for the long winded statement but felt it may help someone
I subscribed as well, nice to hear it when I sometimes feel it.

Great video! I was a former HVAC commercial installer for 9 years before switching careers to maintenance facilities. I was doing everything you were taking about in your video in order to learn my new trade. I learned more in 3 years about the equipment than my boss who has 30 years of experience in the same building! I also had no real mentorship. I learned everything from related experience, studying on my own, watching youtube videos & taking various online classes. Also picked up some information from our outside contractors & other techs on Facebook. I would steal equipment manuals from work & read them at home. I also see the same thing where I work. Guys do not want to apply themselves. They would rather be drinking or smoking weed every weekend. Funny thing is they wonder why they are not learning anything!

What is your current background? If you have no kind of education or training then I would first recommend a HVAC/R trade school. After you graduate you can try to seek employment at a facility like a hospital, university, school district, etc. As a building engineer you can be called upon to be many things: HVAC & refrigeration technician, building controls technician, electrician, plumber, mechanic, stationary engineer (operating steam boilers & chillers) & more. You also can choose a facility where you can be just a HVAC/R specialist. I like doing everything...just makes me more valuable to an employer. Hope this helps.

Yup I’m 20 came into hvacr with no experience I do commercial food equipment and refrigeration for grocery stores, trained with somebody for 5 months been out on my own for 3 months. I’ve learned so much more now that I’m out to the wolves. Shit 2 weeks ago I was on a call at 1am for 2 bakery ovens down, there was nobody to call for help and sometimes that’s the best way to learn because I learned a lot that night. All I do in free time is learn and I beat myself up sometimes for not being on the same level and not being able to figure some calls out like the seasoned guys but I remind myself it’s part of the journey. If it was that easy and you could figure everything out after a year of training the trade wouldn’t be in such high demand

Figuring things out that had you stumped and watching your knowledge grow feels great. We need techs I'm sure that's how it is where you are located. I'm in Massachusetts. It can be very hard for new guys you may feel overwhelmed with trying to take in so much information. Just do not get discouraged with the trade if you do not like the company you're at. If your unhappy find another company. Show up on time, stay off your phone and act like you want to be there thats all.

The best thing I did was I would do my daily helper grunt work, but I found several great techs that I would spend my free time with. I’ve spent hundreds of hours going on their after hours calls with them. Or when it was slow (Winter time) I would still go in for free and I would watch or actually do their work for them. Some times the best teaching experience is actually hands on, even if your doing it for free, because you’ll see all the effort you put in in the long run.

Another major problem with not only apprentice, but 5 to 10 year vets,....( at least that is what the RESUME SAY'S) is electrical understanding, from Basic properties, to troubleshooting. Not only that, But My tech's and I are available for communication to actually help techs,(within the company, but when they do call.......For a given problem, I find that when I ask questions like:
    Problem, "No AC:
1). What are your pressures? Ans- I think around such and such.
    2) What is you amp draw on comp?, what is name plat FLA? Ans... Not sure, but I think it's OK
    3) Is the Stat calling for cooling? ans.....Pretty sure...
The point is we cannot help you with out BASIC Information, that any seasoned tech will ask you. My problem is when you reply is I think or I think it's around there! There are BASIC information parameters that anyone, "Including myself needs to provide if help is to be rendered.
As an Apprentice, you ARE AN Engineer IN TRAINING, because most if not all of the trouble shooting IS BASE on ENGINEERING principals that aid Tech in repairing and, or correcting ANY given problem.....
The Gentleman that posted this video,...??? I would pay highly just for nothing more than his demeanor in talking, and my perceived thought of what he knows. Then comes the Resume....! How you carry yourself is very important and so is knowledge!!! at 33 years in service,!!! "I STILL HAVE QUESTIONS". I am not GOD, and if I knew everything, I wouldn't have to work at all...
My thoughts are nothing more than tryin to help the younger, up and coming techs on WHAT WE EXPECT! PERIOD. If you want to learn your craft in the HVACR industry, basically knowledge IS POWER! Knowledge attracts money! Last note, if you or even I think that we can sit back, "THE WORLD OF TECHNOLOGY, WILL PASS YOU BY"! It waits for nobody, I really think "YOU CAN DRIVE THIS INDUSTRY"! Only if you are truly into this field, because it is, after all" F--king INTERESTING"
Good lick and APPLY YOURSELF. This Tech is giving you "FREE" information to succeed!!!!!!
    MY........02

I have a folder THICK of manuals from the installs I've down, primarily Trane, I collect service facts data and other install manuals i can get to understand the machine. I used to be deathly afraid of ECM motors, and well after a couple calls I got the hang of it, and it's pretty easy to diagnose bad ECM motors or bad CBs. I like to read and talk shop with my father whos a 30 year tech, and watch HVAC repair videos like yours, Nor-Cal Dave, hackfreehvac, anti DIY hvac, etc. I find it nice to watch people do their own thing and so I can try an implement their advice. Some works, some don't but its one thing I love about this field. Luckily I've had my father teach me when I was 13? I started the field when I was 17 with my dad, started a crappy company that abused me at 19 for a good half year. I'm 20 and bout to work for a Commercial company as a PM guy, which I'm not mad. 3 years of experience, and I'm always adept to learning, it's fun and great. Great message my man, I still apply this myself. The one thing though I do distaste, is on-call. I only like it when it was my side jobs haha. Great video my man.

I'm almost 25 going to a 9 month school and just started my first HVAC job. Exactly what you said the main guy I'm with is a sad excuse for a tech but the owner has taught me an incredible amount in the first couple days. Loving your videos just trying to learn what I can and give myself decent opportunities. Thank you for the down to earth info and experience.

8 ball never too late, I dropped out of high school, delivered pizzas until I was 34, finally had to make a change, went and got my high school diploma and finally had a win in life, I wanted more so I went to a two year HVAC school worked my ass off , and thought of HVAC 24 hours a day. Graduated with a 94.5 gpa and achieved National technical honor society. Got a job my last day of school, worked there for 5 months, my boss could see my dedication and made me a tech only after working there for only 6 months,so yeah you can do it!!!!

    • @gregmercil3968
      @gregmercil3968 5 ปีที่แล้ว

It's never too late, that's what I keep telling myself. I'm going on 39 and just getting into HVAC myself, I just recently enrolled in school. I wasted almost 18 years of my life working in the awful dead end grocery business, and currently work an unfullfilling and low paying security job. I desperately need a change. But not just for me, but for my wife and kids (who I love to death) and provide a better life for them. I'm naturally mechanically inclined and HVAC sounds like a very rewarding and exciting career.

My experience is most service guys are weak on relays and electronic troubleshooting . I was too thanks to some of the guys on here I learned a ton! To everyone that watched this video, you just got hit with a buttload of facts!
I have decaids in this field. Keep your nose to the grindstone. Look to the older well seasoned techs that stick to a consistent rudimentary basic diagnostic procedure remain unwavering you will advance, you will pass the people around you in this industry that pussy foot! Put in extra time after hours to study you're only helping yourself that puts you in a position to help others and that in itself puts you in high demand!
There are three kinds of people in this world those that watch things happen, those that make things happen and those that wonder what the hell happened!
Now shut up & get back to work 😎

Another thing for apprentices stay off your phone I can't stress that enough stay off your phone get in there get down and dirty ask questions lots of them B one-step of the head of your lead tech if you go out to the van to get something take garbage with you or something you're not using you must keep your mind going all the time even when you eat lunch talk to the journeyman about the job ask him questions no question is a stupid question the man in the video is correct the trade is constantly changing and you constantly have to keep up with the times knowledge is power..... And the more knowledge you have you will always have a job and don't forget also stay off the phone and show a little Hustle

The argument that a guy paying out of pocket for a trade school won't put as much in isn't accurate. I paid out of pocket banking on a better life. I cashed in my 401k to do it. I had very little left while going to hvac school. I worked ten times as hard as the guys with the unemployment bill, and some of the guys with the GI bill also. I had a lot of skin in the game to succeed. But I agree with you on the morale: "He who puts in the work reaps the reward." And THAT cannot be argued.

Good Advice, I'm currently in a vocational school for HVAC and have never been a big fan of educating myself but I've come to The conclusion that in order to be successful I must be educating myself on my own Time. When you first got in to the trade did you focus on 1 specific application or did you become well versed with numerous applications?

  • @humbertomanteiga
    @humbertomanteiga 6 ปีที่แล้ว

I feel I got into the trade too young, By that I mean I didnt care much at first, just wanted to make a wadge. So Inevitably I was condemed to the installation part of the trade for my first 8 years.. I drifted in another trade after being laide off 1 winter for 2 years and was completly unstimulated by it. Going back to Hvac, I miss the smell of copper like my mothers cooking lol. Apprentice 4 (here in canada) were pretty expensive to hire, and in kind of a grey zone, even worst 90% of my work experience is all installation. I finally unhooked a job, So now ime Trying to forge myself with youtube and google to be a better service tech. Its such a nice and stimulating trade if you put some heart into it. Your advice is very true
