H/H match update and preview of the week ahead: ... This is now week 210 of our favorite classic game show (the show ends with week 291 and episode number 1455). These episodes were taped on July 25, 1977, and originally aired in early September of 1977. Our three stalwart regulars are all in their places with bright, shiny faces, and rounding out the Match Game panel this week are: ~~~Semi-regular Fannie Flagg, who is hanging around for a second straight week, her 65th of 90. Fannie's track record in the H/H is 48.3%, currently higher than any of the three regulars. ~~~Dick Smothers, who returns for his second (and final) week on the panel. (So from one Dick to the other, saving some set technician the work of changing the name plate in front of seat number one!) This particular Dick made his debut in episodes 971-975, and hasn't (yet) played a head-to-head question. (Will he get a chance this week?) ~~~Last but not least, we say "How-deee!" to Minnie Pearl, who joins the panel for her one and only week. (Pucker up, Minnie! Gene's got his breath spray and you know what that means!) Last week, King Richard answered all six H/H questions (and matched two of them). Reviewing the past 64 weeks, Richard has played 273 times. Everyone else combined played 47 times. (Charles had 16 opportunities, Brett 12, Fannie 9, Betty 3, Lynn Deerfield 1, Gary Burghoff 1, Rosemary Forsyth 1, Nipsey Russell 1, Meg Bennett 1, Scoey Mitchell 1, and Trish Stewart 1.) Percentage-wise, Richard has answered an astounding *85.3%* of all the H/H questions over these past 64 weeks, which is interesting in light of the fact that his track record when it comes to actually matching the contestants is below that of all his peers. Well, let's sit back and see what happens over the next five episodes as we enjoy another _________ week of Match Game '77! ~~~Today's action: Our champion wins her third victory by a nose - Brett's "Nose," that is! *Today's audience match question: "Joan________"* (My thoughts: of Arc, Rivers, Crawford) - Usually I hate "name" questions, but today I had no problem coming up with three that I think are appropriate for 1977. Actually, four, I also thought of Joan Russell. The celebs: Richard (of Arc), Charles (Baez), Brett (Rivers/Crawford - Brett got two in today.) The choice: Crawford (Interesting. Not my first choice, but maybe in 1977 she would have been?) The answers: Rivers, Crawford, of Arc Our champ has called on Richard both times before, and they matched once. I fully expect she'll pick Richard again... Yes, for the ninth consecutive time now, King Richard is chosen to answer the big-money question. Stats: Richard has matched 91 of his 214 most recent attempts (42.5%), 74 of his last 171 attempts (43.2%), 30 of his last 74 attempts (40.5%), and 11 of his last 31 attempts (35.5%). His overall success rate is *41.8%* and this is his 692nd attempt so far. For the sake of comparison: Fannie has matched 14 of her 29 attempts (48.3%), Charles has matched 33 of his 69 attempts (47.8%), Brett has matched 30 of her 70 attempts (42.9%), and Richard has matched 289 of his 691 attempts (41.8%). Dick Smothers and Minnie Pearl haven't answered any H/H questions yet. *Today's H/H question: "________Turn"* (This one may be hard. I thought of Left Turn, Right Turn, No Left Turn, U-turn, Point of no Return, the song "Turn! Turn! Turn!", No deposit, no return, and a few others. I guess I'll say "No left turn." I don't have high hopes for matching anyone.) Richard seems as undecided as I was. He looks right and left, and seems to be considering Fannie's written suggestion. He keeps looking her way as he writes. The camera cuts to the champion who doesn't look likes she's settled on her answer yet either. Richard seems to discard his first card and write a second answer which he files with the shake of his head. The champion answers "Right" turn. Yeah, that was one of my thoughts, but why is it better than any of the others? That's why I thought today's H/H was a tad harder. Well, it's time for Richard to have his say. Oh, no! Richard wrote "Left"! No H/H match today. ~~~Finally, here's our updated leader board showing the 11 celebs with at least 3 H/H matches, ranked by accuracy: (Note: An asterisk before a celebrity's name signifies that she has "retired" from the show and her H/H stats are now complete.) (Note: For tied scores, I consider the one with the greater number of matches to be higher; if the matches are equal, the celeb who first achieved that score goes on top.) Orson Bean - 100% (4 wins in 4 attempts). TIE: (*)Jo Anne Worley - 75% (3 wins in 4 attempts). TIE: Joyce Bulifant - 75% (3 wins in 4 attempts). Gary Burghoff - 71.4% (5 wins in 7 attempts). Brett - 42.9% (30 wins in 70 attempts). Richard - 41.8% (289 wins in 692 attempts).
