H/H match update and preview of the week ahead: ... This is now week 204 of our favorite classic game show (the final week will be number 291). These episodes were taped on June 25, 1977, and originally aired in late July of 1977. This promises to be a great week: Our three stalwart regulars are all in their places with bright, shiny faces, and we've got Fannie and two familiar guest panelists joining them: ~~~After one week off, semi-regular Fannie Flagg is back for her 62nd week of 90. Her H/H track record is terrific: 48.3% (14 wins in 29 attempts). Will she see some H/H action this week? ~~~Mary Ann Mobley (with her lovely handwriting) returns for her ninth week (of 10 total). We last saw Mary Ann in episodes 876-880, so it's been a while. Mary Ann is one of only 38 celebrities who have scored a H/H match (she was actually #33 to achieve this honor, and she stands at one match in five attempts). I'd love to see her have another shot at it! ~~~Last but not least, Anson Williams rejoins the panel for his second and final week (he first appeared in episodes 261-265 way back in 1974). Anson hasn't been chosen for a H/H question yet. Could he be celeb #39? Last week, King Richard tightened his grip on the H/H segment, answering all four questions (matching one). Reviewing the past 59 weeks, Richard has played 252 times. Everyone else combined played 45 times. (Charles had 15 opportunities, Brett 11, Fannie 9, Betty 3, Lynn Deerfield 1, Gary Burghoff 1, Rosemary Forsyth 1, Nipsey Russell 1, Meg Bennett 1, Scoey Mitchell 1, and Trish Stewart 1.) Percentage-wise, Richard has answered an astounding *84.8%* of all the H/H questions over these past 59 weeks. Clearly, being one of the least successful celebrities when it comes to actually matching in the head-to-head hasn't dented his popularity in the least. To be honest, after watching around a thousand H/H questions, I have to say that matching 41.8% of the time is actually very good, and so, by definition, Richard is very good at it. But I'm puzzled why he's considered so much better than his colleagues with essentially equal (Brett) or superior (Charles, Fannie, Betty, etc.) track records? For example, Brett misses one question, and several people comment that the celeb was stupid for choosing her, that Richard is the best. Richard misses 5, 6, or even 7 questions in a row*, and when he breaks that streak with a great match, several people comment about how he is truly the greatest at the head-to-head and how he must have ESP. (*Richard missed six questions in a row in episodes 502-507, and seven consecutive questions in episodes 845-856, and another seven questions in a row in episodes 962-967.) At any rate, I'm hoping to see at least a little variety when it comes to the head-to-head segment this week. All Richard all the time gets stale. Anyway, it's time to dive into another ________ week of Match Game '77! ~~~Today's action: Our champion had just earned his a second victory and scored $500 on the audience match, but time ran out before his head-to-head match question. To recap, he picked Richard the first time, but they didn't match. Now, after waiting 13 days (the prior show was taped on June 12; this one on June 23), he has three new celebrities to choose from, but somehow I bet he'll stick to Richard. Of course, it's Richard. This is King Richard's tenth consecutive play, and he's been chosen 138 of the past 152 times. (Charles answered five of the remaining questions, Fannie took three, and Rosemary Forsyth, Nipsey Russell, Meg Bennett, Scoey Mitchell, Brett, and Trish Stewart got one each.) Stats: Richard has matched 82 of his 193 most recent attempts (42.5%), 65 of his last 150 attempts (43.3%), 45 of his last 100 attempts (45.0%), and 21 of his last 53 attempts (39.6%). His overall success rate is *41.8%* and this is his 671st attempt so far. For the sake of comparison: Charles has matched 33 of his 68 attempts (48.5%), Fannie has matched 14 of her 29 attempts (48.3%), Brett has matched 29 of her 69 attempts (42.0%), Richard has matched 280 of his 670 attempts (41.8%), and Mary Ann has matched one of her five attempts (20%). Anson hasn't had a shot at a H/H question yet. *Today's H/H question: "Miles________"* (Myles Standish? I'll go with that even though the spelling is different.) The way Gene repeats the spelling leads me to believe that he's trying to discourage them from saying Standish. Oh well. Richard finishes what looks like a long-ish response (but I didn't see him dot an "i") and glances at Fannie as he files it in the slot. The champion answers "per hour" and the audience groans. I think it's a great answer, and may even be a match today. At least the champion "followed the rules" and didn't say "Standish" like I did. ..... Ha! The audience yells out "Standish"! (Earning them a lecture from Professor Gene.) Anyway, Richard was closer to the champ than I was: "per Gallon." No H/H match today. ~~~ Our champion blanked on his final question and was defeated after having won two games and $950 in prize money. *Today's audience match question: "Age________"* (My thoughts: of Consent, of Aquarius, Range) The celebs: Charles (Aquarius), Richard (Consent), Fannie (Limit) The choice: Limit The answers: Before Beauty, Old, of Aquarius Yuck. Another audience match fail. (We just had one in 1013). ~~~Finally, here's our updated leader board showing the 11 celebs with at least 3 H/H matches, ranked by accuracy: (Note: An asterisk before a celebrity's name signifies that she has "retired" from the show and her H/H stats are now complete.) (Note: For tied scores, I consider the one with the greater number of matches to be higher; if the matches are equal, the celeb who first achieved that score goes on top.) Orson Bean - 100% (4 wins in 4 attempts). TIE: (*)Jo Anne Worley - 75% (3 wins in 4 attempts). TIE: Joyce Bulifant - 75% (3 wins in 4 attempts). Gary Burghoff - 71.4% (5 wins in 7 attempts). Betty - 50.0% (19 wins in 38 attempts). Charles - 48.5% (33 wins in 68 attempts). Fannie - 48.3% (14 wins in 29 attempts). Jo Ann Pflug - 44.4% (8 wins in 18 attempts). Brett - 42.0% (29 wins in 69 attempts). Richard - 41.7% (280 wins in 671 attempts). Bert Convy - 33.3% (5 wins in 15 attempts). *These stats include every head-to-head match from episode 1 through 1016, excluding the lost/missing/damaged episodes: 31, 32, 33, 311, 312, 313, 324, 325, 645, and 910. (As per MatchGameProductions, these episodes "are nowhere to be found and also aren't in the Goodson/Todman Library. Sadly, looks like they are lost forever!") -- Also, note that episode 849 was never produced. Additionally, these stats do, however, include the H/H results of missing episode 968 as those results were revealed in episode 969.
The fact that he played at SeaWorld, where orcas and dolphins are kept in concrete coffins, is pretty telling. Thankfully, MOST people, these days, know better. Only the lowest of the low sell their souls to SlaveWorld. #EmptyTheTanks
At 5:40, it seems to me that Brett is basically giving the answer to the question, given that a very popular commercial for a couple years had referred to the "heartbreak of psoriasis." And yet she answered "chicken pox" (my first thought).
Gene needed to go a little easier on the contestants. These folks are on tv for the first time, very nervous and sometimes just didn't get the total gist of the question. Which is okay. It's a game. But no need to embarrass or ridicule them.
Finally found it! Episode 1006. I'm thinking it might be because of her challenger's question at 11:00. For the question, "Dumb Dora is so dumb she thought that the movie "Deliverance" was about a BLANK", she answered with, "birth", and matched two contestants that wrote "baby".
I told you he'd pick and lose with saint Richard again today :) Ya know, these contestants appear to be stupid, but they're really not. They sit home and watch this show; they KNOW how often saint Richard loses, and yet they STILL choose to lose with him. And we're seriously supposed to feel bad when they lose?
Why wouldn't Charles think of 'garter belt'? There aren't that many possible answers, not to mention that for most of his life at that point, all women's stockings were held up by garters. They used to be a lot more common than now. You didn't have to 'come up with' that answer any more than you would to say underwear or necktie.
I know what you mean. I know Gene is the "STAR" like he`s always reminding everybody when they step out of line, and I know he has to keep the pace of the show going as not to waste time or anything, but I hate it when he`s always a little rough on Charles.
Everyone please do not make derogatory comments about Brett. It upsets Leesa_ Bretts fanclub. She only wants to hear wonderful comments on her beloved Brett even tho we all know better
Gene is far worse. He's often not only ungracious, he's aggressively rude, and that's really unforgivable in a host. I'm guessing he was a scrawny kid who got picked on by bullies, but secretly wanted to BE one of the bullies.
Male contestants who picked for Dawson again...and lost again!!!.. getting old watching this show!!! Why watch 6 celebrities when you only pick one like Dawson since he is the only picks to choose?

On the head to head match I thought of miles davis
This bunch wasn't that hip! That was the first thing I thought of too...
wtg ! , Fannie -nice zinger on Brett
I wonder what that Anson Williams sea world special was like, he is a really talented person

Melissa was a popular name in the 70s my daddy gave me the name Melissa in 72 the day i was born
Mary Ann is SO pretty & sweet! 🤩
I LOVE Fannie's hair flower! 🌼
I LIKE Brett's outfit! 🧡

Did Anson Williams do any more Match Game weeks besides this week and 1974 (the one they show on Buzzr so much)?
No. He appeared those two weeks total.
Gene needed to go a little easier on the contestants. These folks are on tv for the first time, very nervous and sometimes just didn't get the total gist of the question. Which is okay. It's a game. But no need to embarrass or ridicule them.
one of my pet peeves - sometimes , he's okay - and others , a total jackass
They watch the show. Spare me.
@@noampitlik2332 Get a life, Noam. Things really must be slow in the old Hollywood bit part actor's home.
@@2Majesties the real Noam Pitlik died in 1999. I just watched a cute movie he was in with Dick Van Duke called Fitzwilliam.
Do you realize that Gene is have fun with the contestants, right
Very rare to see Gene win one of his bets with Richard. But, by gum, he sure got to keep his nickel!
sawdust in her NAVEL!
What episode was Linda on, again?
Finally found it! Episode 1006. I'm thinking it might be because of her challenger's question at 11:00.
For the question, "Dumb Dora is so dumb she thought that the movie "Deliverance" was about a BLANK", she answered with, "birth", and matched two contestants that wrote "baby".
Neat! Thanks for getting back to me!

I’m glad to see Linda back, I was furious when they matched “birth” with “baby” and it cost Linda the game!
Mary ann and fannie on same show. Lol
It’s that “time of the month” for Gene again.
It must that time for you, also
Has anyone seen the episode that Betty is talking about at the end of the video at 2:50?
