I believe maybe the MIL didn't like her daughter in law and/or the MIL was a miserable old lady that hated seeing the people around her happy. Don't know for sure but that's a possibility.

Get more cameras, inform the police in advance, never open the door and call the cops if they do show up. Make sure to tell the police exactly what she had done to your home, the costs it brought you, and how clearly deliberate it was.
This is a talk to the local police beforehand kind of situation. Let them know the situation and have documentation with someone in charge saying that she has no right to be there. Maybe even ask for help in figuring out what the next step should be. They may have a non prison type detention area or facility.

depends where you live, but cops kinda "look down" on kids putting charges against moms. a few years back my mom had a psychotic break down and called me at 3am demanding i talk. she spam text me and i asked what was up. she absolutely needed to hear me to know i was "okay". i texted her that i was fine, sick and trying to sleep that my throat was sore, and not in any mood to talk. she wouldn't ease off no matter what i said, called my roommate whom i was dating at the time waking him up... and then called the cops for a wellness check. I went to the police as it was latent harassment after a bit.. they wouldn't even look at the text message spam i got or were willing to hear me out i got the "do you really want to press charges on your mom" cops will look at it and just claim "she old and not all there... do you really want to9 send your elder mom to jail"
Omg my ex MIL use to pull stupid stuff like that all the time until I did the unthinkable. I married her only child and she wanted grandchildren like the minute after we were married. For 2 years nope sorry no brats for you lady. After 27 months of no sign. my exhuband was going through mental issues and drank a lot where the first and last time he put hands on me while I was asleep and 6 weeks pregnant. After waking up in hospital with my jaw wired shut I was beyond livid. After I was discharged I filed for divorce and got some cells sucked outta me. I sent exhusband and exMIL my positive pregnancy test and my unalive pregnancy results to both of them. TIL this day 18 years later that woman is scared of me.
I would not do the "leave for the weekend" thing here. MIL could arrive that weekend and have plenty of time to move all her things into the house, then when you come back and attempt to kick her out, she can tell the police that she's been living there for months and claim residency. Even if it's provably false, the responding officers likely won't bother with the necessary due diligence and pass it off onto the courts, which will take months to process everything, all the while MIL gets to squat in your house.

The locks on your house serve no purpose but to slow an intruder down or force them to make noise. If you're not home, and you won't be home for a while, they'll get in.
