  • My buddy over at Lotus sent me a horn to try a little over a week ago. After a week, I'm feeling much more comfortable playing this horn. I also play the Edwards X-13 in this video, for whom I am a sponsored artist. Which horn do you like more?

How does the X-13 blend and fit into larger groups.

It’s great man. I’ve played it in chamber groups and big bands. Lead and jazz chair. Funk horn sections on Cory Wong’s albums too. Versatile. I don’t reallly play orchestral music so it’s hard to say on that.

You sound good on both of them. What Lotus model are you playing in this video?

It’s one of their earlier prototypes. Just played a solo and solo max and the silver flare at ITG and they were awesome. This one is meant to be more of a lead/commercial horn.

I like the Edwards, but you could probably kill it on a potato

Do you think a Lotus or Edwards X-13 would blend well in an orchestra?

You sound much better on the Edwards (perhaps because you are more used to it) You smile with your corners much more with the Lotus, again trying to achieve similar results to the horn you know. I'd be interested to hear you play it again in a bit with a focus on holding the corners in. I believe you could get phatter (tee hee) on top with the Lotus without the smile. As always you sound MAHVELOUS regardless. Miss you Bro!

Thanks for this, Doc. I will focus on the corners the next time I play this horn!

I recently spent about 4 hours play testing a Solo Max, Universal Max, Silver Flare, and Classic…and honestly none were impressive.
The most important thing I noticed was that the horns resonated poorly for anything fingered with 2&3. It’s interesting because these horns are advertised as all of the notes playing evenly…but that was far from my experience.
I also have issues paying $6k for an instrument that is not assembled by anyone affiliated with Lotus. I think for that price, Lotus should be assembling and testing the horns themselves…not shipping them out in pieces to be built by a local repair tech.
I had an X13 for a while and it was a much better playing trumpet than Lotus. Wish I still had it.

My understanding is that their newer horns are playing much better than their prototypes. And Rapa talks a lot about slotting and how we’re so used to working hard to play the horn that we’re bringing some of that baggage over when we play the lotus. He talks about letting the notes sit down, and not trying to lip them up in any way. I’m going to be trying some of their newer horns coming up here. I’m interested to see how they play. I’m going to keep an ear out for the 2&3 notes too. Thanks

@@AdamMeckler I did play their “Gen 2” Classic model. From what I was told, Lotus has changed the venturi of their leadpipes which has lead to better slotting. I’d agree that the updated venturi is much better. I’d be interested in spending more time with a “gen 2” Silver flare, but it might be a while. Collins Music Center had 6 silver flare bells that were the all the wrong bore size…so they’re waiting for a new batch before they can start building Gen 2 Silver flares.

The Edwards was fuller in the entire range. Lotus sounds like your working to hard maybe just trying to get the sound your use too. But as you state Edwards is a more open horn and that is my preference playing a CG Early LA Benge.

    • @AdamMeckler

Cool thanks for this. I agree that the Edwards sounds fuller in the entire range. But yeah that may be because I’m just more familiar with it. More soon!

I prefer the Edwards but if you do go with the Lotis I think you should definitely play on one of their mouthpieces. Seems like Intonation is much improved with them

Yeah I have four of them I've been trying but unfortunately I dropped the one I was liking and greatly dented the shaft. Waiting til I can get near a shop to have it fixed. I still gravitate towards my X-13 as well. I did some recording with the Lotus yesterday and everything from low C to C in the staff was hard to control. It was weird. Has to be my familiarity with the horn. It's a big adjustment.

@@AdamMeckler That is really unfortunate especially when you’re that far north and repair shops probably aren’t very common.
It certainly does seem like you’re going from a cannonball to a 22. Even if you don’t end up switching I hope you learn some good things from the experiments!

This is a great video because a huge factor is what you are describing by way of having to learn to play differently on these $6,000+ horns, which is for some reason downplayed by the makers? Really great video.

That’s why I usually suggest to my students that they stick to consistent gear for a good chunk of time while they’re developing their foundational skills. Then experiment if you want.
