I never looked to Lennon to provide me with the answer to the ultimate question of life, the universe, etc. I just liked his music. I like some of Steely Dan's songs, but not as many or as much as Lennon's.

@@marilynking4003 Yoko ratted out McCartney, to her cousin in Japanese customs. w/ no rat involved, a perfect idiot could've told them Paul might just have ...maybe,..a little reefer w/ him. Paul cancelled a Japanese tour, and spent 10 days in Maximum security. by year's end, Lennon is dead, and Paul is stuck for life w/ Yoko as a business associate.flashing phony smiles in public, going along to get along. some versions of the story have a reluctant cousin on the other end of that phone, as he didn't want to do it. she was not above sending some crooked ex-cop after someone. read Fishman's book 'The Last Days of John Lennon.' obscure, but informative account of a 'gopher' for the Lennons. he was there 'til the end. he was a victim of a couple ex-cops she had on her payroll, 'cause he supposedly promised JL that a certain personal folder (if need be) be given to Julian Lennon. that only means one thing. DON'T let Yoko have it. my "facts" aren't reliable like the book. so get it, second hand, as I feel I've opened a can of worms irresponsibly. don't trust MY memory.

I love Steely Dan I love John Lennon, and I love Just Gimme Some Truth, however Imagine always struck me as blindly naive anti religious nonsense, yeh it expresses a desire for a better world, but if you think for a second that getting rid of God and religion will change human nature and human hearts you are not enlightened you are just deluded. In fact apart from God the human species is hopelessly doomed to extinction, the only hope is for God to intervene, and many people know that God is real and that he has intervened in their lives, and their lives have been radically changed, and that includes myself.

Some may say I’m a dreamer but I’m not the only one……John was putting it out there. I don’t think that he or anybody else thought it would come true. With a song like, “Give Peace a Chance,” it is a plea to try not an invitation to join a ridiculous cult. Is it forbidden to even try. So nobody should entertain the thought that maybe we shouldn’t butcher each other throughout all time because that is just the way it is. Humans are nasty, evil brutes and nobody should EVER entertain any idea that we could stop being evil because we would be naive? Nobody should even think about it. I mean the very idea of humans living in peace, nobody utter a thought of humans being peaceful or the realists of the world will tear into you like sharks. Nobody ever again even make a suggestion even implying that humanity has even the slightest chance of being peaceful.
    He’s I am
Pissed that we humans are not doing better. We are not hopeless slaves to violence!

The pendulum has swung the opposite way for now thanks to Donald Trump fooling a lot of people all of the time. Luckily, his embrace of fascism and blowing up our government and economy will hasten the swing away from this extremist episode in our history. This blatant attempt to baknkrupt the working class while offering huge tax breaks for his billionaire friends will not go over well, along with $8.00 for a dozen eggs. He's trying so hard to be Putin that he's ignoring his own base and the pain they will suffer when their food stamps are cut along with medicaid, medicare, and Social Security. The Trump administration's intentional cruelty towards the working people will cost them congress in 2026 as long as we still can manage to hold real elections by then.

I think Lennon was saying how the world should be. That is why he used the word imagine. Who doesn't think at some time a situation could be better or even ideal. A job, your health, life in general. Buying a lottery ticket right. If this was truly the attitude of Steely Dan had then I guess they should have put out a song imagining gloom and doom. Remember then don't dream, don't imagine, just accept what is happening and live with it. Steely Dan, actually a group I like, should have put out an album based on Dante's Inferno, "Abandon all hope ye who enter here".

Yeah it's kind of a dumb and deeply cynical interpretation and response. What's wrong with imagining good things or setting goals? Lennon's song was not a hot-off-the-presses news story or a take on the present day and clearly not meant to be. Pretty much the opposite, and hope that we can extricate ourselves from our problems at least eventually, and celebrate the good parts of our spirit. Who is that hurting and how?

John came from a culture which had an healthcare system, which was free at point of use and a social care system which made it difficult to ' hit the concrete ', . The US is different illness can bankrupt your family and two pieces of bad luck and you are on the street, thus when he wrote 'All you need is love', within those bounds he was accurate, not being American and having been raised in a more compassionate country.

Sure, current US health care costs are out of control -- but it didn't used to be that way. Americans declaring bankruptcy due to the cost of healthcare between the 1940s (when Lennon was born into that compassionate British system) and the 1960s (when he wrote the song) was virtually unheard of.

When I saw the tagline of this on my menu my first thought was- oh well here we go again, more gossip from the past. But being a hypocrite as well as a huge fan of both Dan and the Beatles I was pleasantly surprised to find that I agreed wholeheartedly with Fagan and Becker, even though at least half of my own children disapprove of me in saying that Imagine was the worst thing any/all-of the Beatles had ever done, including Helter Skelter and Revolution #9. Sure, like with today, there was so much of the early 70s that was dreadful, but Imagine was as stated a naive reaction to it, reducing all the problems of the world to religion and personal possessions- in a world of which most inhabitants have so few, rather than say military-industrial complexes, pampered oligarchs, greedy corporate officers dissolving jobs for a year end bonus and politicians caving to special interest groups' social agendas rather than fighting homelessness, hunger, a broken healthcare system and not fighting for new ways of keeping workers employed. "You may say" Lennon's song says that, but no it doesn't; it doesn't even come close. It was about as useful as the message in a fortune cookie.

I was intrigued by this story and thus compelled to leave a comment! Steely Dan was named after a steam 🚂 powered dildo! A weird and strange fact!
I am a fan of S D, and enjoy 🎧 listening to a nunber of their hits, but them criticizing Lennon is callous and heartless, even though Lennon himself was no saint with numerous accusations of alleged wrong doings!
His message in the song Imagine is hopeful and optimistic! It's meant to be aspiring for all humanity! To strive for collective love, compassion and empathy 🌎🌍 world wide! What's wrong with hoping and wishing for a better existence and life experience? One can always hope for the dark 🌑, ominous, neferious, sinister and enigmatic ☁️🌨️ cloud to finally rise and bring true relief and freedom!
It may not 🚫 happen in our lifetime, or ever, but hope always reigns eternal!
If we continue in our current trajectory, we are more than likely beyond saving and headed for inevitable inailation! Erased from existence until The Universe decides to give us another chance I guess! Who really knows! Take care! 5:17

If it hadn't been for Alan Klien (for which John trusted) and many law suits because of him they could've went off did their own thing but could still work together as they wanted. Fagen is the fool in the end. In nearly every musical instance, Lennon's straight-from-the-heart lyrics, buttressed by his simple but subtle chord structures, tower over Steely Dan's pompous sarcasm and pretentious pseudo-jazz compositions and will continue to do so till the end of time. Fagen takes offense at John's idealism but has no problem naming his band after a dildo featured in a book by a wife-killer. For all their technical skill, Steely Dan's music--though sometimes amusing and complex--has always left me cold. If I want jazz, I'll listen to the real thing.

Sometimes great musicians are just that, nothing more. That's Fagan. Trying to diss a legend for expressing his dream is juvenile and misguided. A song that Yoko basically wrote and John turned it into a "product". A while back after seeing this song being talked about I looked up the value of the mansion and the Steinway alone and in today's money it would be pretty astounding. Steinway even did a limited run on a reproduction of the piano. It's a pretty naive thought, Imagine and has it's roots in communism of all things. Yoko is Japanese which makes it and her even more baffling like she was some kind of intelligence honeytrap. John was damaged goods so he was ripe for the picking. People think the mental illness of the average celebrity today is "epic" and "novel" but that's because they either forget about John & Yoko or never knew about them and their shenanigans. • @nowhereman8656
    @nowhereman8656 2 วันที่ผ่านมา

Now I like a lot of what Steely Dan produced, and I was not a John Lennon worshipper like many-- actually I was annoyed with that since though I'm not the smartest guy in the room, I read people quite well and thought many people were missing Lennon's arrogance...
HOWEVER, I like to be fair and cautious about overcorrection, which we humans do probably more often than any other mistake.
Lennon's approach and delivery was idealistic, and far too much of a Hail Mary pass attempt to fix everything. This I agree with.
    Fagen overcorrected as well, though.
This is a perfect time to revisit this disturbing phenomenon that I think will likely never be diminished to a world-"saving' level, but NOT because we CAN'T do it, but because we keep on believing we can't.
Then we go back the other way too far. Typical.
So John's message was over the top idealistic, so we just give up? Of course somebody's going to say "well no we aren't giving up!", but things are going the opposite direction from what you and I both know, would have been better had we at least got as many people to think the way "Imagine" suggests!!
I grew up poor, and am still poor, but happy and healthy. I don't need to ignore a call for peace and try to talk people into buying what they don't need for a price that isn't fair... just to be "successful". The balance of it all I can't figure out any more than anybody else, but the extremes against Lennon's vision (many people's vision-- because it's right).... have only grown again.
Too many persistent, capitalistic robotic psychopaths have convinced everyone they were playing a game, and no matter how anyone gets an unfair start being rich from family or all odds in their favor or against, they are supposed to just make it on their own.
    Of course that's also unrealistic.
By the way, Lennon did know what it was like to be poor.
So bust on Lennon's lyrics sent from on high all you want-- I find it inappropriate as well-- but it IS in the right direction, unless you want something like "Elysium" to come true. That's where it's going and you know it.

To be fair, Imagine is far from being one of John's best. You could choose from Strawberry Fields Forever, A Day In The Life, Across The Universe to name just 3 that are much better.

John Lennon, even in death carried on as the poster boy for smugness. It took almost a decade after Lennon died for BONO to unseat Lennon as the most smug, self-righteous, neigh possibly the holiest man to walk in our spiritual realm until Al Gore road in on his eco-friendly, fart free horse to claim part ownership of the magical horse. Both men, humble men are forever fighting for the privilege of getting to be known as the ass end of the horse. Still too early to determine who is going to be known as the biggest horses' ass. Stay and follow the story,

Glad to hear John taken down a notch or two. I like a few Beatles songs, but I've always thought the group to be over-rated as musicians. Yeah, they had a huge cultural impact, but mostly with the lowest common denomination of music consumers. JMHO, but Becker (RIP) and Fagan were head and shoulders above the Beatles in pure musicianship. Another great musical genius from waaaaaay South of the Border, Brazil's Milton Nascimento, also took a dig at the Beatles with a great song, "Para Lennon e McCartney", especially as covered by "Friends from Rio" (can be found with a TH-cam search). Incidentally, the late great Wayne Shorter played with both Steely Dan (great solo on Aja) and Milton ('Miracle of the Fishes', on Wayne's album, Native Dancer).

Why did you put JMHO? You're obviously NOT being humble as you're assuming your opinion is correct. Millions of people worldwide disagree with you and have done so for many years. You may say they're overrated but that's foolish. It comes down to personal musical taste. Just because you don't like something it's wrong, not to mention lazy, to dismiss it as overrated.

Well first of all you can blame the crash of our industrial country on the government. By taxing the crap out of our industrial Industries and letting countries do some of our manufacturing in their own country that don't have a clue how to do things correctly never did never will. Take our cars and trucks for instance some of them is made in Mexico some of its made in China someone made in some other fourth world country that don't have a clue what they're doing and then you wonder why there's so many recalls in these vehicles. Millions of people got let go tempers started flaring when they don't have enough money and cannot buy a loaf of bread to feed their family.

@@CB-xr1eg I really do like that song honestly. I also really like "The War Is Over". But I can't really buy in to all the lyrics. The sentiment is meant to be positive and encouraging, and I do appreciate that. But I can't take certain slogans literally. However, among extremely famous people, Lennon stayed grounded in some ways that many others don't. So I hope that any criticisms don't get taken as any kind of a dis.

Steely Dan are arrogant and make complicated music for the sake of it. It’s musical wanking. Their music is so perfected it comes across as antiseptic and akin to Muzak.
The Beatles were 4 guys who did it mostly themselves. They didn’t need to bring in 20 guitarists to find the “perfect” solo.
    Steely Dan’s arrogance is unparalleled.

Musical wanking is a great term and when I think about it the first 2 names that come to mind are Frank Zappa and Captain Beefheart.

As always Americans take everything Literally. And everything is absolute so you only have two simplistic tribes to keep you always separated. Black/White, Left/Right nothing inbetween. Songs and Movements trying to show how we are more similar than different and can lead to majority decisions that are good for us (you know Democracy...now a Distant memory in the USA as the Far Right Tribe has won) are Aspirational and give hope to people to aim for something better. America SHOT Hope away JFK, MLK, RFK and JL.
