Oura Ring 2 Teardown: Inside the NBA’s COVID-19-Detecting Smart Ring

  • The Oura Ring 2 has been around for a while now, but it became mainstream news after the NBA got one for each player to try to detect early signs of COVID-19. There are a lot of questions about the effectiveness of the Oura Ring, but one thing’s for sure: it’s jam-packed with a lot of tech for such a small device.
The Oura Ring is interesting for a whole basket of reasons. If you’re a sports fan, you’re probably rooting for the Oura Ring 2 to work so we can have basketball back in our lives. If you’re a biohacking fan, you might be interested because it monitors your vitals and analyzes your sleep. We’ve seen a lot of gimmicky devices over the years, but it’s in our blood to understand how new tech works-so we took it apart to find out what tech is hiding underneath that .25 Oz of titanium.

Thanks a lot for the great video. Our custom shaped 3.7V battery is showed in this video. The thickness of our battery is just similar to the circuit board, fulfill the rest of the space and providing the max duration.

I mean, rating products for their repairability is kinda their thing. And the manufacturers could always have pulled a smartphone and stuck a battery in a hump, protected by a glued piece of colorful glass. That would give it some repairability and some points for style too.

Great teardown. To second what others have said, I'm not sure how you could get a replaceable battery into this thing without introducing multiple fault points along the way. But if they had a program where you send it back for a replacement ring and they're able to recycle/refurbish it (effectively), then that doesn't seem too shabby.

I think Jeff 's guess of "pulse oximeter" is incorrect.
As far as I can tell, pulse oximetry requires two LED emitters of different wavelengths; SpO2 is calculated as a ratio of reflected red to infrared light. The Oura works with infrared alone.

I would have thrown it in an a acetal bath to disolve the plastic. ( you could re overmold a new layer if you wanted to repair it i guess)
those small unmarked chips would be protection circutry on the battery possibly or wireless charging regulating circutry,
The temp sensor would be inside the chips, many IC packages have thermometors inside the chips to measure chip temp but if it's done after sleeping and watchdog wakeup , the chip temp is negligable and can be used for ambient temp.
pretty legit build but should not be $300, that could be made for under $15-20 with most of the cost being molding and finishing the ring metal. metalworking is much more costly than pcb production and ovemolding plastic.

I guess it doesn't work any more? I'm looking to buy an Oura ring but sadly, all the rings currently made are for those with smaller fingers. The largest Oura3 made is just ~.75 mm too small in diameter. As a chemist I believe you could dissolve the metal using an acid or electrochemically (which will even dissolve gold or Platinum) and won't hurt plastics assuming that no circuitry is exposed.
The battery is an issue. That happened with my Kindle too. One option would be putting a solar cell on the outside and or else a replaceable battery in the ring's crown.

if you were a jeweller you could cut through the metal outer ring with a metal jeweler's saw and pry it open without having to deform the inner plastic ring at all… but you would then have to cast an entirely new outer ring which seems like more work than this nonserviceable tech is worth to be honest

I just saw these in another video, and a paid content. They're over $300 new, but down around $100 on eBay, but I was wondering how to replace the battery. So I see, we don't. That's disappointing. I really don't like disposable electronics, especially at that price.

Here’s my jeweler’s advice: throw it away. These rings are not designed to be repaired rather thrown away

I disagree, anything can be repaired with enough patience and the proper application of google.

Maybe future iterations of such rings will be built with repairability in mind.
Reminds me of the 1st Apple Airpods Pro and Samsung Galaxy Buds Plus teardowns.
Going by how they're made Airpods Pro are disposable while the Buds + are more repairable.

they should be given to everyone or at least a ring that just detects covid.

I'm curious at how well it works. I can only imagine the shitshow that the company will recieve if one of the NBA players gets covid and this ring didn't catch it.

    • @japiditto
      @japiditto 3 ปีที่แล้ว

@@Razzman70 Well - Oura is not specifically designed to catch Covid-19. It tracks your temperature, breathing, heart and activity. It's seen - at least in some cases - that change in temperature, heart rate, etc. are early warning signs that you are getting sick. COVID-19 or something else. BTW, I have had Oura almost two years now. I had my ring replaced twice. With first two the battery died after 5 months, but now the third has been working full year nicely. Got a ring to my wife at the same time and she has got no problems with hers in two years. I didn't see any link to the Oura-site, so here it is, ouraring.com/

its not a covid detection tool its just a body temperature monitoring tool. which will just flag an warning to the medical army that supports these athletes.physically and mentally
