    "Sambal Goreng Pengantin" is a dish. However "Pengantin" on its own actually means "bride groom", and "Goreng" on its own is the verb "fry". So the first grandson was confused "why would you fry a bride/groom???"

    Yayy..u guys noticed the traditional Malay house! Most raya ads will feature this kind of house for the traditional/village setting. It's a wooden house, built on stilts, and each state actually have different design/form of traditional house. They always have large front yard with coconut tree, rambutan tree, etc around. The entrance after the stairs is called anjung - a non-formal space where guests are welcomed.
    You guys are right about this ad being quirky! Some other quirky things in the ads that u guys might have missed;
    1. At the florist - when they asked for BUNGA LAWANG (star anise, a type of spice), the florist say all of the flowers there are all LAWA (beautiful).
    2. At the neighbors house - when the boy asked for DAUN SALAM (a type of leaves), the man says 'kirim salam', a word of refusal (literally, kirim salam means send my regards, but also can be used sarcastically) and suddenly shut the window.
    3. The twins - one of the boy misunderstood the text about PEDAL as pedal in English, while the grandmother asked for chicken pedal (chicken gizzards).
    It was a fun raya ads, and I especially love the grandmother's accent. I think she's not a professional actor, but she really pull it off!

    Sambal Goreng Pengantin is a malay traditional dish. Normally this special cuisine will be serve during the celebration such as Hari Raya or kenduri ( wedding celebration in Malay culture in the Kampung @ village.)
    This cuisine called Sambal Goreng Pengantin because have to prepare alot of spices, ingredient and also to get the different parts of meat before cook the dish . Sometimes, we take up to two or three days to prepare the ingredient in traditional ways before we cook the dish.
    Then, you must have a lot of patient to cook for several hours.
    Same as the 'brides' (Pengantin) have to do alot of preparation before the wedding ceremony.
    That how this dish was name ' Sambal Goreng Pengantin'.

    In this short film, the family consists of male grandcildren. The grandmother is wanting a female grandchild, but every year she gets a male grandchild. So, she has to rely on the male grand children to help prepare the special dish, "Sambal Goreng Pengantin". She distribued the chores of buying all the ingredients of that sambal to all her grand children and giving them instruction through their cell phones.
    In the closing when she was talking as a hologram to her grandchild, she gets a good news that finally, she has a girl in the family, not amongst the grand children, but now a great grand daughter!

    For Malay and Indonesian word, the "c" is pronounced 'Ch", so "cucu" is pronounced "choo-choo". Cucu means grandchildren.
    But English and Englished-derived words like "Celcom", which may be short for cell phone or cellular communication, the "C" is a 'S', "K" sound.. or whatever the English "C" word is. Celcom = Sel Kom.
    Malay and Indonesian words that are borrowed from English are spelled iwith a "K", example, "Komunikasi" is borrowed from 'Communication".

    Traditionally and generally, the female do most of the cooking in a household although in these modern days, more men starts to help their wife to cook too. However, during Raya, since we have to cook and prepare a lot of dishes, men would help out too especially in cooking labor-intensive dishes like dodol, lemang, etc.

    In tradition, when we have feast like Hari Raya or wedding ceremony, men will take job to cook because it usually a lot and need lots of energy and time consuming. Same goes to the Setia advertisement where the dad spent 10 hours with his son. Women cook for daily meals, we don't disturb them.

    "C" in Malay language is pronounced as CH, but if it's English derived word like celcom then you say sell-kom not chelcom. i.e: Cantik(Pretty) is pronounced Chan-tik, the city Cyberjaya is pronounced as it is since English derived.

    In traditional culture Mostly women..but during big event men do the heavy cooking like wedding..or special occasions like Aqiqah (for new born)... eid..coz when it’s party here 100 is small number..so menpower are needed...women will focus on the preparation like onion cutting..washing meat and chickens...etc etc..and a lot of times women are the event planner..but nowadays in modern culture men are more involved in daily chores and cooking.

    Just wanna point it out, it wasn't "cow's heart" that he's buying, but "cow's liver". In Malay, "hati" has 2 meanings, "liver" the organ, and "feelings" figuratively. Weirdly tho when we say "hati" referring to feelings, Malaysians would refer to the blood pumping organ "heart" lmao. The actual Malay word for the blood pumping organ is "jantung". In the video, liver was translated to "heart" just so the joke would make sense.

  • @ashtriana1
    @ashtriana1 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Sambal goreng pengantin (Bridal fried sambal) , named such because they are usually made at weddings, where one or two cows are slaughtered to make a beef dish (such as curry, briyani or kurma), and to prevent wastage the organs such as liver, spleen, lungs are made into this dish...and present them as one of the dish on the main table where the bridal couple will be seated as a bridal feast....
    In my family, its made every raya but we don't use the tongue and the kidneys (tried putting kidneys once, but the taste is not nice and the smell!!!) .... It is tedious to make thus we only make it twice a year (hari raya puasa(aidilfitri) and hari raya korban/haji (aidil'adha)) and if there is a wedding....

    In this sitcom, the grandmother has only male grandchildren. Quite a troublesome for them to get all the ingredients she has requested. Maybe all the grandchildren are not keen on cooking. At the end of the video, one of the grandchildren broke the news that she will get a great granddaughter at last. That's why she was dancing happily.
    Celcom is our local cellular provider company. So, all messages and videos thay shared on the sitcom imply that Celcom bring a good coverage throughout the country.

    The Malay traditional houses pretty much similiar to Southeast Asian natives houses in term of structure. However you may find different design that represent the ethnic. Most SEA village houses built higher to avoid impact of seasonal flood. Nowadays most of village houses have combination of modern and traditional.
