it’s awful how much they only care about profit and not real people. I can guarantee they would not want a film made of their traumatic death, yet they are doing it to others despite the knowledge that nobody wants this. Sickening.

Milwaukee is more than Dahmer despite what the series suggests
The first messed up move Ryan Murphy and the team behind Dahmer took was just assume that no response means a yes. If we as a society has learned anything from the conversation around consent, only a yes means yes. This principle should be applied to any situation that requires consent. The fact that the Dahmer team ignored that notion shows that they really didn’t care what the families of the victims had to say and just wanted to make a shocking project. They didn’t want to make a difference or shed light on any other social issues; they just wanted a film that would get them a lot of attention and praise.
All he does is fuck up. Keeping on Lea Michelle was the first in a LONG line of bad mistakes

This is why I am not watching that distasteful mini-series. Also, the way they promoted the mini-series was unpleasant too.
@Iara Figueira Jeffrey Dahmer’s mini-series that Shanspeare mentioned in this video. I saw snippets being promoted on Instagram and they made Jeffrey awkwardly mess around with a dark skin Black man. I do not know if he was grabbing his neck or face in an aggressive manner because it was a month or two ago when I saw the promo. Also, I showed my older sister, and swiped quick after it popped up the first time😭💯

I think remakes of certain real traumatic stuff are just fetishes at this point. Like people actively making and watching movies based on slavery, holocaust, Dahmer and then claiming "I felt nothing" just feels like they're getting off on it. Idk how to word this, but it's like they don't even see us as people outside our traumas.
one could say it may be a product of masculinity. toxic masculinity says emotions are weak, so feeling empathy and pain for these victims isn't as cool as flexing your lack of empathy, your proof you've "overcome" weaker emotions to show how unfazed and strong you are. not that men only do it, but masculinity is the aspiration anyone should have since it offers power. anyway lol just spouting whatever comes to mind

I've seen a lot of Dahmer memes despite trying so hard to avoid this whole thing, and I found that to be disturbing. I hate that it exists but I think it's absolutely messed up to treat it like it's "just a show" when it's (dramatized) non-fiction.
They did this when takeoff, a rapper, died. His body was plastered all over Twitter. It was disturbing and I DID NOT want to see that. I the same thing happen to Kobe but that was the first time I was seeing it in real time. And It was mostly gossip outlets that was doing it.

i unfortunately have seen things like that in a small group chat with my brother and his friends. they added me because it’s funny memes. but then i go on one day and it’s literally a video of a girl who was famous on tiktok getting brutally murdered by her male friend. i had night terrors for years and still get them occasionally. other than that, i’ve only seen the occasional animal video on my feed (meme pages 😐) and i immediately reported and blocked the users.

The whole concept of filming a person dying or record their body right after they died is just so disturbing to me. The victims of violence are not circus animals for entertainment. They were humans whose lives deserved to be celebrated and honored.

Recently found out vicarious trauma is a real thing. It means simply by watching a video or a few about a real event which is violent you can actually be full on traumatized. And if you are continuously exposed to the harmful video you can get ptsd.
A lot of research shows that journalists or social workers can get ptsd from just hearing stories or empathizing with victims of a tragedy. But also they've found that news itself can cause this.
In Japan when a certain tragedy from a neighboring country occured they put a warning not to watch or look up the tragedy online on twitter or youtube.
But I accidentally already watched it and I couldn't sleep for 2 weeks, had flashbacks that actually made me throw up, and cried every day. And my therapist was like 'yep, you were traumatized. It's perfectly normal to be traumatized by watching a video of a tragedy' It's normal?!
And I remember I cried when Netflix recommended me the Dahmer show because it just doesn't need to be brought up again.
Also checked out of curiosity how many people are affected by a death (like grief and trauma) its said to be 130+. So if videos abd stories are shared about that I can imagine thousands of people being traumatized by the event.
I think there needs to be better regulations about series on netflix. 13 Reasons Why was also harmful.
(Also the American news, specifically Reuters, posted graphic images of the event that traumatized me so I also feel like the news has gotten out of hand...)
Edit: I think the trauma comes from empathizing with the tragedies, not just because its violent. If the content seems distespectful to the families its also damaging to everyone else who could possibly sympathize or empathize with the family's situation.

People keep looking at me weird when I mention I have PTSD from my dad constantly playing violent video games when I was alone with him a town over from my mom every weekend (divorced weekend dad sort of situation). It’s not crazy. It’s not. Thank you for spreading the word, friend!

I felt like that for a very long time. Nowadays, i just can't watch properly a show or a documentary about it.
My mental health was too much damaged bcuz of various true crimes videos i watched when i was younger. (I mean, it was like 1-2 years ago but it still! I can't watch it😐)
@@delilah.d9457 My therapist said the need for more information was the brain trying to find more information to solve a problem. But tragedies are tragic because they can't be solved.
Also I was traumatized accidentally AFTER deleting my watch and search history in youtube but I accidentally watched a youtube short which has the most disturbing imagery of the event that should not be shared and that's the thing that haunts me. It was a mistake in the algorithn because I was watching Halloween content.
But I learned not to blame the uploaders because their action is a trauma response. Trauma responses vary widely, but I can imagine most of the people sharing the content aren't actually desensitized. Like you said you watched too much true crime.
I think people suffering online accidentally get people to share their suffering just because when you feel terrible mentally you do a lot of illogical things like uploading horrific material.

That's how I went down a rabbit hole of reading about a disturbing event and thinking it's just shock value and if I read the real story it wouldn't be so bad. So I kept reading and the details haunted me so much I had to get therapy. So now I have to actively tell myself not to seek answers and sometimes not knowing is okay too. So glad that I came across your comment, it's very validating. I'm sorry you've felt the same, I know how awful it feels.
Kendall Rae actually made a video last year about the murder of my aunt - heard about it from friends and my family was devastated - she didn't notify us at all beforehand like she claims to. I couldn't bare to watch it myself but from what people said, it was extremely invasive, had many exaggerated or false things... I wrote to her asking to take it down both on IG (no answer) and on her email, which I then got a representative saying she can't pass my message belong as it is "fan mail". Absolutely ridiculous and heartbreaking situation and now her video has at least 1.5 million views about someone she has no idea about.

Idk if this applies but I remember a couple months ago when a crime show had an episode where some events shown were eerily similar to details from an event that had happened only months earlier. I’m sorry, but some of the things were too similar to have been a complete coincidence. It was bad enough to the point that people had to post warnings online so those who were directly effected would know to avoid it. Just…. Can people stop?

@@ambersmith2612 yeah. There’s a fine line between taking inspiration from actual cases and using major parts of cases/crimes because they’re what’s in the news/what everyone is talking about. Law and Order, unfortunately, crosses that line way too often.
I love how you're anti-true crime. It's like a podcast tea time that won't die. It's something that also overshadows missing adults and children.
I do think the genre has potential in helping those affected; i would love to see it pivot outside of “entertainment” to more informational, helpful way. but I also wonder how the general public-who have come to see it as entertainment-will take that shift. Will the genre be as impactful? Will people still take time to help families? It’s such a complex conversation beyond that.

As was said in the video, the genre of true crime does hold potential. A channel I watch that sometimes discusses past cases often provides a psychological, mental etc outlook and explanation for the cases (since many of them dealt with abuse, now that I think about it).
Or in other words, the different cases would be used to discuss some narrative (i.e. what happens when two narcissist come together, the effects of past abuse etc etc).
Many viewers usually found the videos comforting or validating in a way since the videos would come full circle to talk about an overarching theme (that may be more relatable, since not everyone experiences being involved in a “true crime case”).
@@Shanspeare Agreed. True crime has potential but often times it ends up being entertainment.
Though I also understand that people have limited amount of energy to empathise with all kinds of stories. Some stories just hit different for a variety of reasons. Maybe the city the case took place is familiar? Maybe the listener/viewer knows someone who was affected by the case or even just a similar case? And so on.
For me, an interesting example of true crime and it’s potential to influence real world in a positive way, comes from nearby. I live in Finland and happened to listen to a true crime podcast with my sister this summer. It was a new podcast by YLE (Finland’s national public service media company) and each episode dealt with a different case. The podcaster not only summarized the case but also interviewed a wide variety of people: experts on various topics, police, friends and families of the victims and so on.
One of the cases dealt with the disappearance and murder of a 17 year old girl, Sari Liinaharja, in 1987. It’s a very well-known case here in Finland because the perpetrator was never caught. The podcaster, though, went and interviewed a man who had been a suspected to be the murderer. The man had been interviewed by police several times before but he had always denied of ever been in contact with the victim or having been driving in the area at the time of the disappearance/murder.
On the podcast, though, he suddenly decided to tell - on tape - that he had been driving in the area. And he also said that they had offered a ride to a hitchhiker whom he thought was Sari Liinaharja. He didn’t admit to murdering her but blamed his friend - who had died a short while before the visit by the podcaster. Nonetheless, he ended up admitting that he knew about the murder a lot.
After this exhange the police begun to interview the man again. He’s still not under arrest but he is under inspection. In Finland this sort of turn of events after such a long time is rare. If the prosecutor decides to press charges that would be the second longest time between the killing and actual pressing of the charges in Finnish criminal history.
I only hope that Sari’s family have gained some hope after all of this. It must be incredibly painful to be in a situation where you surely would like to ”get closure” (for the lack of better word) yet also don’t want other people to forget because they need leads - even if it means new news articles and podcasts and so on.
(The name of the podcast btw is ”Viimeinen johtolanka” or ”The Last Clue” if translated into English. Unfortunately it’s all in Finnish.)

this is so interesting, i thought it was a bit insensitive to make this series but i still watched it and relatively enjoyed it. BUT i will not recommend it to anyone because it was very traumatizing. Another thing i found very odd was in the final ep there is a monologue by one of the victim's families. They copied the real speech word for word and did not ask the women who said it.

Yes, the woman who made the speech is an older sister of one the victims, I cannot even imagine the pain she has to go through seeing the person who took her little brother's life glorified and his death made into entertainment as if he wasn't a person who lived. Very disgusting of them to use her words especially without consent.

A good true crime show that recently came out is A Friend Of The Family. The real survivor worked on the show herself and even had a cameo. It’s a very good example of how to make a series about terrible things without harming the real people. It simply tells a survivors story in a way that does not glorify the perpetrator.
This just shows how we as a society have become so desensitised to trauma and horrific incidents/crimes. It’s like we’re trauma hungry monsters that feed on such shows and hearing or seeing horrific acts for a rush or to get a kick. It’s actually really scary to see where we are….
For some people, yes they have a strange obsession with such things to the point of having fetishes for murderers. But honestly it’s all about normal human curiosity at the end of the day. Regular people (in our developed countries) do not see such things at all. I think it’s ok if people have a curiosity for gore. I mean, don’t surgeons? You have to have something different mentally than the average person in order to look at organs on a living person, cut them open, and sew them back up and not have any reaction. There will always be people like that. And honestly, we need certain people to be desensitized in order for us to have helpful people like that in society. It all depends on what they’re doing mentally with that curiosity.

in 2014, in my town, a woman was shot by her ex boyfriend at the mall, and i remember my classmates were sharing graphic pictures of it on our whatsapp group. it just made me so so fucking angry that they felt it was ok to share those pictures. some people are sick.
A hard side note about Drake; it seems in our culture, black men do a really good job joining hands and going against their women. Whether it's sexual assaults, domestic abuse, or anything seriously damaging and traumatizing for any human to go through... Black men love to shout in unison, "she's lying!". The darkest part of black culture is being highlighted on the internet, and no one is speaking up against it loud enough... Black people are all staying silent about this. Why? Thank you for explaining and bringing light to this . Lately I’ve been seeing TH-camrs using JusticeForQuella on their videos when normal their videos are usually about something completely different. Maybe to bring awareness ? Idk maybe it’s just me but it’s kinda distasteful especially when it’s to soon . In my opinion. Today’s society is just so out of touch/ insensitive about certain topics especially when it comes to someone’s trauma or death .

American Horror Story: Hotel, who's first episode ends with an extremely violent r*** scene with the victim promptly dying? Probably the entirety of AHS's second and fourth seasons?
Not to mention his behavior behind the scenes, like changing the main romantic plot of Glee because the main actress's bf (THAT abusive one) didn't like watching her kiss other guys. And the sexualization of teens in everything he's involved. The man is the personification of problematic.

It makes me actually feel good knowing that the dreaded essay, that in class I was usually the only one excited for it, has evolved into an actual visual artform and channels like this, with the research and well-written and educated thoughts and concepts, that gives your brain a bit of a workout while engaging with others as if you're in a college class again. Also a year ago I made a page on Tiktok and started posting my favorite shows and movies. I would comment on what I think about scenes from my favorite shows and movies. I started getting thousands of views and likes after posting my first video. I gave up on it after a month and stopped posting. I just didn’t feel like posting anymore. I no longer enjoyed it so I put my page on private and abandoned my page. I do admit that I happy at first that I was getting a little “ clout “ but I think social media becomes too much to handle and sometimes you stop enjoying the things you use to enjoy.

I don't even know the name of this poor victim, but Vice did a 4-part documentary on his killer. She strapped a homemade b0mb to this man to divert police attention away from her fleeing the scene, so he could be rescued. The detonation went off and his death was uncensored. I don't know why someone green-lit the idea that whole world should see such a violent, undignified death. I don't even know him, and it makes me want to cry.
The Dahmer show is NOT in the perspective of the victims it’s literally just showcasing all of the things Dahmer did in detail like it’s almost a recreation of his activities. Idk really because I stopped watched after a couple episodes maybe the course changes but…
A close friend off mine stumbled onto a video of her brother-in-law’s tragic death. She reported it, but who knows how many other people saved/posted it. She worries that her husband’s family will accidentally see it, just like she did. Absolutely awful.
One true crime show I think actually used their show to help the victims was Cold Justice. It was lead by a former prosecutor and CSI expert who would examine cold cases with the help of the local police departments. They solved quite a lot of the cases!

I am someone who has always watched true crime, but as I got old enough to see it online I have been...very strict about the true crime content I engage with. So much is gratuitous and disrespectful.
Hiring someone to play a serial killer who was a teenage heartthrob so you can uh...express how attractive some people think they are is gross.
Telling a story is a valuable thing, but I think you should investigate WHY you are telling it and establish a framework for minimising harm. In entertainment, in news, whatever it may be.
I don't know if this video has been posted. But a few weeks ago I was with a search party and we found the bodies of two students from my university because the police were useless in the search. I stayed with the family and friends for 3 hours and in that time this guy started recording the bodies getting brought up from the quarry and was laughing and dancing because he could satisfy his boner for posting dead teenagers online. It was fucking awful and I almost attacked him even though my only connection to these people was feeling like I'd want people to do the same for me. I've already seen the video of their crash circulating and it's horrid how sick people are. I can't watch true crime or these Netflix things anymore, because I've been close to or had to help with the fallout of so many people dealing with horrible situations while being sensationalised by the media. The people that made this are so fucking gross. Thanks for covering this topic 🙏

I used to love true crime, the more gruesome, the better. However, as I've become more aware of the affect that true crime documentaries have on the families of the victims, those kinds of documentaries have started to make me feel sick and I can't watch them anymore. I try to only watch true crime where the victims are alive to (willingly) tell their story. Good examples are "Our Father" and "The Tinder Swindler", both of which involved the victims of the crimes as driving forces in the documentary. Said victims are trying to raise awareness about the crime so that it won't happen again. And they get to tell their own stories.
You are my favourite video essayist. You have a great voice, your writing is wonderful anf everything is very camping. You do your research and even though i really don't care about some of these things, you still make me want to watch that stuff. Have a great day!

Thank you. I cannot even begin to explain the horrific effects the popularity of true crime has done on my mental health, I cannot even begin to imagine the way it has re traumatized people.
We need to have a conversation about how weird and creepy Ryan Murphy is. Like almost all his projects have extremely problematic features (ex. Glorifying serial killers and school shooters, every offensive storyline in Glee, and constantly justifying the acts of terrible people under the guise of “satire”). Not to mention he’s consistently spotlighted two female actresses with terrible track records (Lea Michelle and Emma Roberts). While he could have not been aware of that, I have serious doubts since many coworkers have spoken up about how both actresses are outspokenly awful; and yet he always seems to fixate on them and continue to give them lead roles?? It’s like he actually buys into the mean girl rhetoric he supposedly satirizes 🙄🙄 In addition to being disrespectful to the families, he sent Evan Peters the script for Dahomey when he’s repeatedly said these types of roles drain him and he needed a break. Obviously Evan Peters is an adult and can make his own decisions, but it just shows that Ryan Murphy has a track record of being disrespectful, insensitive, and belittling to everyone-and then mocks people (especially minorities) in his projects when he’s your typical douchey white, male, director.
