    Isn't it crazy that "a woman's place is in the kitchen" when she's at home and doesn't get any pay, but as soon as its a position that makes money and can have power in a restaurant setting it's dominated by male chefs and women have to prove themselves. If that isn't a perfect example of the patriarchy then I don't know what is.

    • @Robin-uc3nq
      @Robin-uc3nq 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1213

      Ray Ray I understand your point but male chefs have to prove themselves as well.. I mean no one just comes in a kitchen and becomes a chef unless they have a lot of experience

    • @henriquesousa3978
      @henriquesousa3978 5 ปีที่แล้ว +801

      It's not an example of a patriarchy as you are saying. It has nothing to do with the money or the power. It's all about the personality type usually required to be a great chef (and here I mean like a Michelin starred chef). Men are more likely to possess the traits usually required to work and command that type of a kitchen. That does not mean however that there aren't women who can do it, it only means that statistically there are more men than women. However, I do have to say that those who think that "a woman's place is in the kitchen" are complete retards, that is a home task that should be done together by the couple.

    • @James-gm9cs
      @James-gm9cs 5 ปีที่แล้ว +430

      The difference between cooking at home and cooking in the kitchen is the pressure. It takes a lot of mental strength to work as a professional, the kind of mental strength that comes with years of emotional repression that men are exposed to more often than women. Watch Hell's Kitchen and look at the difference between the men and women's team at the beginning. In the end when the deadweight are gone, you still get left with high quality talent from both genders, then it's no longer a matter of gender but individual talent. If you're good enough, you'lll make it. But if you take the average, men are better equipped mentally for it in a professional setting.

    Wanna give Chef Joe a shout out. Was a culinary student and I met him through a school sponsored event, me and a friend mentioned how we were competing in our school sponsored pizza cook off and this man went out of his way to TEACH us. The entire team came down to Marta to meet with him and Pastry Chef Jessica(She also ran Mailanos pastry program, USHG IS GREAT!). We spent our morning making/shaping dough and getting to meet the incredible staff. Then lunch time arrived and Chef Joe came in and took us upstairs for some hands on pizza time. His passion and knowledge was amazing. Hearing about his travels to make sure the food was right and his command of technique was pretty incredible. Everyone made a pie with Chef and had one of the more memorable lunches of my life. So ya Chef Joe is legit.

      Yeah, I can confirm it’s like that in culinary school. In my pastry program, out of 70 people only 5-6 are men. But in our culinary program, it’s the opposite.
      I have a female friend who’s in the culinary program, same school. She told me that she had to work twice as hard as her male counterparts and show that she’s a boss.
      Generally speaking, you’ll find more females doing pastry than males. But that’s slowly changing :)

    • @sick0child
      @sick0child 5 ปีที่แล้ว +91

      It's definitely not as bad now thankfully, but yeah, back in the day when women were widely considered the "weaker" sex, most men didn't think they could handle the restaurant life, because it is gruelling. Now however, it's not uncommon to find a pretty even number of men and women in kitchens, usually at least 1 or 2 women, often in the higher positions as well, because they fight so much harder.

    • @apperusenpai
      @apperusenpai 5 ปีที่แล้ว +105

      It isn't nearly as bad anymore, but it does sadly still exist to an extent. I'm the only woman in the kitchen I work at, and while it's been fine for the most part, there has been a small number of male cooks who have come through that kitchen and refused to take anything I said seriously, even knowing that I've got culinary school under my belt and seeing me rock a busy night on the line. It doesn't bother me that much anymore because I know I worked hard enough to deserve my status in the kitchen (I started as a dishwasher, and now I'm one of the best line cooks in that kitchen, according to the head chef) but it'd still be nice if I could get the same amount of respect right off the bat as my male co-workers do.

      You ever actually cook in a kitchen as a chef? Go to culinary school. It isn't fun and games like the Food Network makes it out to be. It's fuckin' rough, dude! I've had 8 surgeries in my arms due to repetitive motion injuries from being a chef. I wound up having to step down into a baker's position cause it hurt so much. BUT I chose to be there and do not regret it. Culinary school and the culinary world is fun. As for "women being in the kitchen" thing- men were literally the only ones allowed in the kitchen until the late 1800s. Women were expected to clean and care for kids while men did everything else. So, it's a relatively new concept, truth be told.

    shout out to Eat Drink Man Woman. The actor is playing is a dad and a retired chef (i think retired), cooking the family meal trying to bring his daughter closer, also confirmed they hired a top-notch real chef to shoot the close up scenes

      Seriously, I think he wanted a "black and blue" where the heat barely touches both sides (slap it on the back and put it on a plate while it's still mooing).
