This one ended up having a faulty spark plug on cylinder 1. The inner porcelain was loose and the gap of the plug would close. Thank you for the comment Jeff.
@@DadsGarageDiagnosticSpecialist I have a volt as well, it's was doing the same thing. But I've replaced the spark plugs, the coils and the O2 sensors and it's still having the same problem.
Have also seen broken pistons and low compression on these engines. Also the fuel injector could be a problem. You would need to confirm which cylinder is misfiring and then determine if the fuel injector is operating...the easiest way is with a cheap mechanics stethoscope and comparing the clicking noise to each other...you will have to do this quickly after starting the engine for the first time in a key cycle because if its misfiring bad enough it will set a misfire code and the misfiring cylinder will have its fuel injector disabled for the rest of the key cycle until you power down and open/close the door. So don't go through the trouble of replacing a good fuel injector if the ECM isn't opening it on purpose. Spark could be confirmed by lifting the coil momentarily.....th-cam.com/users/shorts5eNN-E7z3Cs The compression test on a Volt may be difficult without the assistance of a scan tool. You may want to disconnect the fuel injector main harness connector on top and remove all the spark plugs then take your compression measurements....pay close attention to the first puff, and then record the 5th or 6th puff...I usually keep pumping until I see maximum and record that. Any low cylinders will need further diagnosis and repair. I have made several successful engine repairs by replacing broken pistons or heavily carboned rings. I've found that compression measurements on these engines can be very misleading, I've had several that would test ok, but still had a cracked piston ring land.....either a running compression test would further show the problem or I'd find it by using a manometer to check for pressure pulses on the crankcase.....th-cam.com/users/shortsxHbL9NOr-Bo as you can see the engine in this video wasn't even shaking, yet it had a broken piston and it was a hard one to diagnose, but I did fix it.
