One rather glaring omission from the review is that you can send the 40x back to American and have it completely remade. And per AHC 40X is 50/50 so a good felt, definitely above average.
That is.the.most.hideous shape for a cowboy hat. That big flat squared front brim. With the 90 degree crease. Looks like a wide taco or the munchin mayors hat in the wizard of oz.
The X designation doesn't really mean much on these modern hats. Vintage Stetsons like a 3x Beaver or a 7X Beaver were far better quality hats than the modern 40X or 100X hats. The splotchiness on the brim after cleaning was more than likely powdered dye that washed out. Manufacturers will use powdered dye to even out the color during the hat making process. Felting and dyeing quality in vintage hats were far better. It's a lost art
Thats why there's tricks to even the color out like burning the hat literally catching it on fire. A 40x is a really good hat from american ive literally had mine filthy roping all day and they get it cleaned like brand new I honeslty think this lady needs to find a better hatter that cares.. I mean that shape alone is all uneven.. a 200x american is pure beaver belly those are the hats you really want. But my 40x is just as good as a 100 its more about how they hold up in the rain

Finally someone who is objective about these hats. Most people swear like these are gods gift to the world. They are pretty good but not the best
What do you think is better and why? Cause I can get my 40x american to look literally like the day i bought it even after being covered in dust
