  • Hi Guys! Thanks for watching my review of the spoonflower modern jersey fabric. After seeing so many reviews that have been sponsored by spoonflower, I wanted to bring you my honest unsponsored thoughts on the fabric. If you have any experience with spoonflower please comment, I would love to hear about your experience with them!

Thank goodness that smell isn't an issue anymore, lol! I've gotten about $2000 worth of their fabric so far this year and it's all smelled nice and fresh! I use the modern jersey often, and also noticed that it goes white when stretched. Unfortunately that's just the tradeoff for custom surface printed fabric versus a woven design. I don't think it's a quality issue per se, it's just what happens when you surface print on a stretch knit. I grabbed one order of their signature petal cotton, just to see if it was a good budget option for non-stretch, and while it prints beautifully, the quality is complete garbage, it almost feels like paper towel, but their minky and higher priced cottons are just gorgeous. Save your money and don't mess with the petal cotton.

The petal cotton is definitely not as soft as the printed cotton from Hobby Lobby or the calico/quilting cotton fabrics. It is sturdy enough for more crafty stuff. I do like the quality of the printing, but have had to realize their velvet printing can let the white show through if you fold it sharply enough. Dyeing velvet is something I would rather do for solid colors. Overall, spoonflower's not bad. Just depends what the expected use is. The samples/swatches are useful though.

Good and fair review of your experience. The clothes you made were super cute! Love the dress. I have ordered cotton poplin from Spoonflower with no issues, no smell. I will say that some prints are a smidge less vibrant than expected and a good quality that wash up well.

Is there an alternative company that does this kinda print on fabric thing?

The price is what had kept me from ordering with them as well. They have so many “nerdy” fabrics that I love but I just can’t get past the cost. I still want some Doctor Who satin pjs one day so maybe. Thanks for the review, I had never heard about the smell before. Good to know.

Thanks for watching! I think if it was just the smell I would have been less disappointed, but I am still tempted to order some of their cottons since the stretch won’t be an issue.

That little dress is the cutest!! Thanks for this video; you are very patient and long suffering. I think I would have been hopping mad about the issues you encountered. You made it work in the end, and your gifts are going to be darling.

I wish I'd seen this before I ordered. I just placed my first order and got their "petal signature cotton". The first thing I noticed when I opened the package was the smell. It was overpowering. The printing wasn't as vibrant as I expected for the price, either. I'm making face masks, so I put the fabric through the wash to get rid of the smell and the strange starchiness it had. Big mistake. The fabric unraveled significantly. I had 3 pieces and they all became so entangled, I had to use scissors to separate them. The smell pretty much came out and there's enough still in tact that I can make the masks, but all in all, it was a huge disappointment given the cost. I won't order there again.

Same experience. That whiteness comes through during minimal stretching on the cotton jersey I ordered too. And the fabric is so stuff and just...not soft feeling at all. Almost scratchy feeling. Even after washing.
Same experience with Raspberry Creek Fabrics too. Ugh.

Its the nature of that type of print on that type of fabric, it has to be printed on blue fabric so you dont see white while stretching it, but because of their printing process its not possible, sublimation is possible only over white fabric, so maybe on a non stretchy fabric, you wont see that

Thanks for your honest review:) I love the concept of spoon flower but that would drive me nuts if I bought a knit and it turned white so easily when stretched. Wovens would probably turn out better for sure. Just subbed today and am enjoying your videos, keep them coming:)

Thanks so much for watching!! I just recently watched inside the hem’s review of spoonflowers wallpaper, and it looks like she had good luck with it, so I may be tempted by some of that soon

I wonder what the fire safety rating is on the fabrics from Spoonflower? Have you looked into whether the inks/dyes they use for printing are flammable since they give off such fumes?

I chose 2 different fabrics and was going to order just one yard each. The price slowed me down a little but what made me stop was their delivery. It would take 24 to 28 days until ship date and then the wait on the actual shipping. That is too long and unsatisfactory to me.

Thank you for honest video. Dress is very cute. Couple comments:confusing name of the video..Did you really spend $$$$? or $? Regarding quality, for that type of fabric you will see white when stretched too much,it is normal. The concept on Spoonflower:you can buy something that is not mass produced and for that you have to pay premium. It is made in US . As for me,i love Organic Cotton,It is certify and quality is beyond expectation. Name of your review is misleading : it is based on couple yards of fabric. Just imajine if you name this video :JoAnn fabric review: Is it worth the $$$$-and then show couple pieces

      Hi Masha,
I'm sorry you were confused by the video title. It was meant to imply is spoonflower worth the money. For me the product was $26.00 a yard, and compared to Art Gallery Fabrics, which is typically $17.00 a yard I didn't think the quality as good. While I do appreciate the personalized side of spoonflowers business, and like that it was made in the United States, the product just left a bit to be desired for the price point. Thank you for sharing your opinion.

I ordered 5 single yard pieces just to see what it was all about. I ordered the basic woven cotton. 👎👎👎👎👎 It was some of the lowest quality I have ever seen. When I pulled a thread to find the straight grain it was awful. The print wasn’t printed any where near straight. And you are right about the smell.

I heard lots of bad reviews about spoonflower. So I'm not even going to chance it although they have very cute looking fabric $20 something for a yard. No thank you.

Spoonflower dyes their fabrics only on top of the fabric, not deep within. ive heard awful things about Spoonflower.

It's printed. When you print in a printer it only prints on top of the paper...it's the same concept but with fabric.
