Finding this discussion today was a direct answer from the Holy Spirit that I begged for earlier today! Corresponded with what my confessor said as well. Thank you so much!
I love the definition you chose to give: “Acedia is the resistance to the demands of love.” I had never heard of this word, yet I’ve been struggling with this my whole life and never really had a word for it. Thank you for this conversation!
I never heard of Acedia - but it's definitely a problem for me. Just now when this came up on my TH-cam feed, I was cleaning out Kitchen drawers, preparing to move - but NOT going over the music I have to sing in church tomorrow morning. Just the immediate circumstance.
This is a very informative and relevant discussion. Love to hear a part 2. Please decide on a mutual agreement on the pronunciation of Acedia for clarity. Thank you all for doing this.
I can fight Acedia a lot less when not being allowed to express love in the most efficient way to get what needs to be done most. For example I cannot help finish the renovations on a house after someone or something tied him up before he finished the work at a critical point during those renovations so he doesn't become homeless unless I am being allowed to go there to do so. Pride in general is holding the churches back a lot.
Like the comment ..you can never do enough for God. We often live dangerously close to works for righteousness. This contradicts Jesus has redeemed us. St Therese s little way puts this into perspective. A little child will only do what it's capable of doing. Then just trusting the loving parent to help .
I have never heard of this before since before. Unfortunately, you guys keep talking over my head. I wish you would be able to talk as if you were speaking to a small child. These concepts are awfully deep and I don’t think that Christianity has to be this complicated. But a very interesting program.
In English it's pronounced "uh-SEE-dee-uh". There is no source or dictionary that gives a different English pronunciation, or even an alternate pronunciation. It's even one of those seemingly rare instances where the British and American English pronunciations are the same! Haha! However, in Latin "acedía" may be pronounced "uh-KAY-dee-uh"?

What a wonderful conversation. I wish I had learned these things long ago. I will be passing this on to my son as he grows. Thank you!

Pray and fast for me.
