I'm thinking about moving to Japan myself to get away from the ridiculous identity politics here in the US. I'm sure Japan probably has it's own problems, but I would rather be a minority in a country that I am allowed to celebrate without it being a hate crime.

I got my 21-pin back in Christmas 2021, and it's a freaking godsend, considering how much Saturn games are going up in price, and the amount of fan translations have been released in the past few months.
Congrats on making the commitment and going through with moving to Japan. Being 6'10" tall I worry I wouldn't even enjoy the trip out there. Also major congrats on finishing school. That shit isn't easy. Now off to check my Saturn to see if this is compatible. Great video as always.

Resident Evil 1 for Saturn is the version I would recommend any time over the PlayStation version. It's how I remembered it my head. A warm but gritty anime style, over the cold American action movie style.
I am sure people watching this video are following the scene enough that they know there is now a 21 pin Fenrir model; they also recently released the Fenrir duo, which supports both 20 and 21 pin Saturn models. There is also the Satiator, which is pretty much ready out of the box as it doesn't require replacing the original laser since it plugs into the video card expansion slot in the back. I have even heard of the Saturn Switcher, which allows for a 20 pin Fenrir to be installed next to the laser drive without having to remove it and has a switch in the video expansion port you can use to change from ODE to laser disc, but it is only 20-pin compatible for now and probably the most involved installation of all.

If someone loves resident evil 1 on their saturn, they should get Deep Fear in there. It was the sega answer to the re2 saturn port cancellation. And its glorious.
Having gotten a MODE before the price jump, its very handy having a honkin' big HDD/SSD that holds everything you wanna play. So far as I've seen it runs out of the box, supports multiple formats, can auto-patch in translations, and handles multi-disk games easily. I've been using it in my Dreamcast (I have a bad history of breaking Saturns trying to mod them t-t). The Fenrir's 20-pin requirement is likely a development limitation. The devs probably dealt with the early systems first thinking to alter it for the 21-pin models later.
Eventually I'm going to be in a similar situation although my library isn't as big given half of it is digital in terms of PS3 and PS4 games. Being a former UPS employee I can absolutely understand why, from a cost standpoint, you wouldn't want to do that. I've legit seen paper get shipped out to Canada for like $350. In my case when I go I fortunately don't have a whole lot of personal belongings outside of games, clothing and my PC. Anyway, I really envy you and you're wife on being able to go live in Japan and I hope you two have a blast living there!

If JET doesn't pan out (hopefully it does, but they can be really fickle sometimes), I would recommend giving Interac a look. I heard a bunch of horror stories before applying for them (I had been rejected by JET twice and it was starting to seem like I might never get over here) but I decided to give it a shot and I never had any real issues with them in my time with them (aside from some minor corporate incompetence here and there). They're also pretty decent about getting new people up and running and offering a reasonable amount of support when needed. Anyhoo, good luck, either way!
The optical drive emulator is awesome, but I smiled when you said you were graduating college at 35 and moving to Japan. I'm just now graduating as well at 31 (this Saturday), and my most concrete plan is to leave the country. Japan was my number one pick; it's refreshing to know someone else from the southeast with similar interests at around the same age is actually going through with it. Good luck, buddy!

I've just started the 2nd scenario of Shining Force III under Yabuse which works fine, but the sound effect for spellcasting is a pathetic 'wheek!' instead of the proper sound so I'd LOVE to be able to play it on my actual Saturn. I hope you are finding Japan to be all you've dreamed, I hear the reality can be not as good as the anticipation for some Westerners, but others feel like they should have been born there.

I messed with a rpi 3 and a zero before. Built the rpi 3 into a ps1 as a ps1 emulator. It was a fun project, but I prefer actual console video output. I'm not so concerned with the games I'm playing being roms or backups, but I want that real video output from real hardware. I'm stubborn as hell that way.

I started with a commination degree, but switched halfway through to a major in integrated studies and a minor in philosophy. I didn't really care which degree I got since I was specifically using it to get a job in Japan, and they don't care what the degree is. So I went with the one that had the least amount of math classes involved. HA!

Same, but now I'd prefer if more Sega Saturn and Dreamcast games got remastered to modern consoles and pc. This industry is terrible at preserving past great games. Microsoft is pretty much the only company trying to do this with their backwards compatibility system.
Really wish Sega would rerelease their best Sega Saturn and Dreamcast games to modern consoles and pc like they often do with Sega Genesis/Megadrive collections. Retro prices are often way too high now for many of these games.

My model 1 Saturn is a launch unit manufactured in May 1995. I didn't plan that, that's just what I got when I bought it off eBay. Lucky me!

There's always the Mode for those consoles, but sadly it's sort of pricey.

Not sure. I didn't come across that issue in my testing. All my cutscenes played out perfectly. Is it possible your SD card is the culprit?
