The One Mineral Supplement You Should Avoid After Age 35 | Dr. Mandell

  • While calcium supplementation can be an effective way to ensure adequate calcium intake, several concerns make obtaining calcium through diet a preferable option for many individuals. One major issue with calcium supplements is the potential increased risk of cardiovascular events; some studies have suggested that high doses of supplemental calcium may contribute to coronary artery calcification and heart disease. Additionally, excessive calcium from supplements can lead to kidney stones by increasing the amount of calcium excreted in the urine, which can crystallize and form stones. Supplements might also interfere with the absorption of other essential nutrients like zinc, magnesium, and iron. Furthermore, the body often absorbs calcium more efficiently from food sources due to the presence of other vitamins and minerals that aid in its absorption, such as vitamin D, magnesium, and phosphorus. Consuming a varied diet rich in calcium contributes to overall nutritional balance and provides other health benefits from whole foods, such as fiber, phytonutrients, and antioxidants. Therefore, it is generally recommended to prioritize dietary sources of calcium over supplements whenever possible.

    If you're going to take calcium supplements, you *must* also take Vitamin K2, Magnesium, and Vitamin D3 supplements. That combination is what's going to get calcium to be absorbed correctly by the body. Learned it from Doctor Lair Ribeiro, who also states that just taking calcium supplements alone could be fatal.

      It takes some getting used to, but altering your diet and tracking how much of the MDR you get through food isn't difficult. I have made up lists of which foods are high in calcium, magnesium, D3, K2 and make sure I consume enough of them daily. A simple Google search for any supplements will get you that information.

    So glad you've addressed this issue. After my bone density scan showed severe osteoporosis, I was put on vitamin D3, 2000IU daily, taken after my morning Boost supplement, 3 Boosts daily for natural calcium. The importance of not taking a calcium pill was explained, and coincides exactly with your information. Good work.

      It sucks that Boost costs as much as it does. Idk if it's a better alternative to Boost but...
      I buy Carnation Instant Breakfast and it says that per tablespoon for calcium there's 25% in the mix only and 50% when made with low-fat milk. An entire bottle of Boost has 25%. I don't know a whole lot about calcium, I just know that having to drink 3 boosts a day must get really expensive so you may save money by buying the mix in general regardless of brand. I can't say for sure if Carnation Instant Breakfast is better than Boost overall but I never see the Boost powder in my local stores so I buy the canister of Carnation Instant Breakfast for less than $8 and my choice of milk. Groceries are ridiculously expensive nowadays so I just wanted to throw this out there because when my doctor wanted me to drink Boost and also eat Activia yogurt, it became too expensive and there was no way I could meet that request. 3 Boosts a day is 90 Boosts in a 30 day period so it must bruise your wallet to do this. If you are rich it doesn't matter but if you are like me and need to try to save money you may want to compare Carnation Instant Breakfast and Boost and see which one is most beneficial and affordable. 💕

So I get my calcium from my cream very rarely do I drink milk except when I have cereal and that is about when I do. But how did we ever get osteoarthritis Because we were depleted of minerals and we didn’t take good care of ourselves. After having knee replacement and taking D3 just couldn’t stand taking pills anymore, but since I was on a lot of pain medication, I didn’t wanna find out the side effects so I stopped D3 K2 magnesium all together, and now starting up again.

      Il déconseille le calcium en supplementation, car risque de calcifications dans l’organisme. Il recommande plutôt le magnésium. Il cite les sources de calcium dans la nourriture. Il dit que ça suffit largement.

    So recently I was told that taking magnesium w/o calcium isn’t rt. One leaches the other, but I know 2much calcium isn’t good either. To combine them w/vit D also, is necessary? But what about ppl who have genetic hyper cholesterol prob? Can’t seem to figure it all out.

      Just take vitamin K2 (the MK-7 tyoe) and D3 as well. That will keep the calcium in the bones and out of the arteries.

    I've been taking Ca supplements with Mg supplements for decades. I don't have any of the problems you mentioned. How do you explain that, Mr. Mandell?

      How is your cholesterol? Have you had a calcium Test done to see if it's blocking arteries in your heart? 💓 I would recommend getting blood panel workup on your heart to make sure everything is truly good, otherwise you're not going to know until you have a heart attack or stroke!

    • @audiophileman7047
      @audiophileman7047 5 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@lovejoy71422 Cholestrol levels are good. The ratio indicated a 5% chance of developing heart disease. I can briskly walk 4 to 5 miles without difficulty and getting winded. I've never had kidney stones. All my labs are in range or better. I'm under the supervision of a physician. I'm doing really well for my age. I credit other healthy living techniques. This question is more complicated than Mandell suggests. The biochemistry of the human body is complex and many factors affect it. To say Ca by itself is a problem is very shortsighted.

    what about the calcium in the water they chlorinate water with calcium hypochlorite and when you use a water filter calcium carbonate is introduced to the water then.....and we cant drink deminralised water or it leaches minerals from our body...

    Asking my doctor about nutritional supplements is pointless. He asks us why in the world would we take K2 or magnesium? He only knew about taking calcium with D3 to build bones, so he has partial knowledge and faulty knowledge of nutrition.

    Water you drink and shower has enough calcium. Calcium in your blood test is not a good thing , doctors dont tell us they say ohhh you have enough calcium but calcium shouldn't be in the blood it should be in the bones . If its in blood it plaques in the arteries. I stopped eating cheese , milk, yogurt .
