  • Dig into what makes whale poop so vitally important to ocean health, and how it helps support countless other marine life forms.
    --
    Whales frequently surface to take in air and let out massive plumes of waste. And while this slurry might seem disgusting, whale poop is much more desirable than it may seem. In fact, it may be one of the most important substances in the ocean - and the world. So, what makes whale poop so vital to our ecosystems? David Biello shares the surprising benefits of whale excrement.

    Summary:
    Whale poop plays an important role in the marine ecosystem. It contains nutrients that support the growth of phytoplankton, which are crucial for the ocean's food chain and play a significant role in carbon absorption, helping to regulate the Earth's climate.

    This sounds like it's even more important to speak out against commercial whaling. It's illegal in most countries, but there are three known ones that actively hunt whales for profit: Iceland, Norway, and Japan

    • @com1695
      @com1695 20 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      Japan’s whaling tradition dates back to the 17th century, where hunting was conducted to obtain valuable protein as food. Today, strict quotas are in place, confirming that whaling is a sustainable industry.
      In contrast, Western countries, particularly the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, and the United States, engaged in whaling not for meat, but for whale products such as oil. The impact of the overhunting that occurred during that time still lingers today.
      It is quite arrogant to criticize whaling now, after Western nations were the ones who depleted whale populations for profit. When whales were no longer needed, you turned against whaling. Wasn’t it you who hunted whales for profit in the first place?

    Phytoplankton produce more like 80% of the breathable oxygen on Earth. The reason this video is downplaying that fact is they want to ensure that their narratives about forests aren't questioned. But if sea levels are rising, doesn't that make a larger habitat for phytoplankton?
