My friends uncle had a sign painting shop on Kansas Ave in Topeka. The buildings were mostly two or three story built of deep burgundy red brick. Probably 19th century.
His work space was 30 feet wide 70 feet deep, and 21 feet tall. He would fasten sign material to the wall to construct a highway billboard 14 feet x 48 feet or even larger sometimes. He would make a few lines for scale, then freehand everything. He worked off of huge rolling step ladders. He also used a three foot broomstick to rest his arm and steady it.
I was 18 at the time and amazed. Firstly, I never realized billboards were so huge.
Secondly, this man was a master of his craft.

I enjoyed watching this video. My biological father’s family had a sign painting business in the Miami area during the 50s, unfortunately when my parents divorced when I was very young I never got to know them. I did however spend many hours growing up lettering posters and creating different alphabet letter designs -- maybe the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree.
