- Car drifting is both a pastime and profession. For hobbyists and professionals, the basic principles of drifting are the same. Toss the car sideways and hang on. We wanted to take a deeper look into the activity. We asked Leona Chin, a professional motorsports athlete, physics-afficianado, and "The Queen of Drift" for a break down of the science concepts behind getting a car to slide sideways on the track.

@@Reversisms technically, it's called a Scandinavian flick in which you go to the opposite direction of a turn then shift your weight to drift the turn. This is used in ultra tight corners in fast speeds. So go right, to go left(faster) than grip

3:51 an addition to this: u dont need actually to know how much angle u need to turn the wheel... they follow how much throttle u give starting the moment back tyres starts to slide (as soon as u feel the slide, u let go the wheel, it will follow the drift direction, u control how fast it turn by throttle, and u catch the wheel if u want to keep that angle).
You can see her wheel in 3:28 turn fast...thats what im talking about.
Fun fact, the first driver shown in this video (Bartosz Ostałowski) has no arms. He operates the steering wheel with his foot.

insane how 1:15 truely shows how insane drifting is. lets assume she just entered the drift. now to continue the donut drift she needs to keep the centrifugal force builds up with steering to the left by steering to the right sadly the video does not continue there but its impressive to try to understand drifting from a third party perspective with amateurish knowledge of physics

Tract is a root meaning to drag, that's why we have tractors, traction, and retract. Tracks are not where the word comes from.
How to Drift (By Fujiwara Bunta):
Step 1: Floor the accelerator as you approach the curve
Step 2: Have a smoke
Step 3: Never ever open your eyes during the drift (the drifting performance will increase if you do this all the time)

So I’m from Chicago and I was outwest with it and this car was flying down the street and I just heard his tires screalling going around a corner and he hit a packer car going fast aslthen he bailed out on foot and I’m not exaggerating 15 police cars was chasing him

Okay, I hope the car didn't flip over when moving fast on steering. I think the best practice is using smooth tire to get a drift at lower speed and doing it on a circuit.
Well, no matter how good you will be, for safety purposes (for other people) don't do drifting outside of circuit or normal street. It is common knowledge.

I though when we steer at any direction it goes to that direction because tyres is certainly pointing towards that direction now TH-cam is saying you are going in that direction because of traction.
I think Physics applied to anything makes little sense if it not applied carefully.

bad arrows mate. RWD in rear wheels - force will always work in a one direction - to the front of the car. Hard to understand for begginers.

Ummmmm... This is a really bad explanation of drifting. No mention of oversteer (or understeer for that matter), just straight into "drifting is caused by going too fast." Going too fast into a corner can cause oversteer (a slide), understeer (the car won't turn), etc. Drifting is about controlled oversteer, basically causing the rear tires to lose grip while keeping grip at the front. A lot more goes into it than "going too fast." Actually, using the E brake causes oversteer by the rear tires going too slowly in comparison to the cars speed.
What if only one of my rear tires lose grip. Is that still drifting?

If you're driving on loose terrain, yes. This is why rally drivers drift in corners, especially hairpins.

A nice intro but the physics diagrams are way off. The rear tires should not be causing the back of the car to accelerate sideways. Friction only works to resist motion, and the rear tires sure aren't turning sideways.
You also need power to do this
