- Astrud Gilberto (born March 30, 1940) is a Brazilian samba and bossa nova singer. She is best known for her performance of the song "The Girl from Ipanema".
At the North Sea Jazz Festival 1987 she performed with her Quartet with a mix of repertoire that included:
‘One Note Samba’ (Antonio Carlos Jobim)
‘La Cumbia’ (Paulo Jobim)
‘Amor et Son’ (Astrud Gilberto)

I'm 70 years old and started collecting every song I ever loved and Astrud Giberto and "Girl from Ipanema" is at too of my list. She did much more than "Girl from Ipanema" like "Fly me to the moon" and her version of " Here, There and Everywhere" so much more from an angelic singer that just melted me. Rest in peace my sweet Astrud.❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤.
I grew up listening to this song voice. Until now these days I never saw the wonderfully delightful bright and tender soul of this lady who gives this music the life it overflows with. Wow. What a lovely soul she was. This is as wonderful as anything I ever heard and I grew up with my Mom playing it, now that I see her the lady who gives it life it is like it is alive all new again. Wow. ❤

I was sad to learn of her passing. "Girl from Ipanema" was a song that I used to cover way back when I sang in wedding bands. Astrud paved the way for all of us. Gave us an example of how the song needed to be performed. Thank you, Astrud. May you rest in peace.
I am 77 and I well remember starting to learn to play tenor sax when I was a kid of 15 or 16 and the whole bossa nova thing was just getting going. So I kind of grew up on a diet of Stan Getz and Astrid Gilberto and I am still in love with the music of Brazil. This lady was my fairy goddess then and musically still is. Sadly she is no longer with us but for me she still around musically and always will be.
Oh no! I fell in love with her voice in 1964. Her singing was an integral part of my teenage and young adult years. Bless, you, Astrud.

I so loved her pure, child-like, innocent, and romantic voice, w/her idealistic, simple words of love, happiness, or sadness. Did she leave any children? When, and where was this concert played? I remember, in her later yrs, she used to sing in Southern Cali, but, also in NYC❤

Her album with Stan Getz changed my life forever! I was only an elementary school lad,but fell in love with bossa nova forever! My parents had the best taste in music along with Sergio Mendes h and Brasil66' ,fantastic group on this recording,musicians were the best of the best!

Nice to see Romero Lubambo and Duduka da Fonseca, on guitar and drums respectively, two thirds of the equally exceptional Trio da Paz. Have to say about that very fine instrumental opening number, I've never heard a Samba-Bossa Jazz ensemble w/ a 5 string solid bodied electric bass played (and soloing!) w/ a pick and a righteous, classic mid 1980s Peavey 2x 18" + 2 x 10" inch speaker enclosure cabinet as backline.

Very hard to believe this musical Goddess is approaching 80 years old.
I think her unforced and natural vocal style has prevented vocal damage.
Born in 1940, performing at this concert in 1987, she would have been only 47 years old. Fast forward to the present, 2022, may I suggest that 72 years old is hardly pushing 80 (offered by another septuagenarian.

This is wonderful and adorable. She's never shrill or too insistent and you can listen to her forever. So "quietly" musical (if you know what I mean) which seems the essence of her personality. This is grace and wonderful music. Kudos to the band who do the some thing. There is passion and commitment here too.

最初の曲が超アップテンポで、びっくり。でもブラジル人は涼しい顔をして演奏するんですよね。
1960年代の世界的なボサノバムーブメントを牽引したのは、彼女のボイスが大きな役割を果たしたのは間違いありません。今でも世界中の音楽のそこかしこにボサノバの痕跡が沢山残っていて影響の大きさがわかります。
つい最近亡くなったと聞き、本当に伝説の中に去ってしまったんだなあと、改めて感慨に浸っています(日本でも夕方の国営放送のニュースでトップで採り上げられていた)。

You can find an old black and white video where Astrud walks out on a curved walkway singing Garota De Ipanema, with Stan Getz and Jobim. It is the classic video of the song.

Thanks for posting this concert. She shines on this with her quartet + 1. Glad she has a trombonist in the mix, because some of her best songs include that instrument. She is Brazil's greatest national treasure, IMO. Bless you, Astrud!
