Populonia was an ancient Etruscan settlement, named Fufluna (from Fufluns, Etruscan god of wine) or Pupluna, the only Etruscan city built along the coast. It was one of the 12 cities of the Etruscan Dodecapolis, the main city-states that were part of Etruria
Already in the Archaic period, probably, the inhabited area also extended to the neighboring hills and the area of the gulf, where, in addition to the main necropolis of the city, the industrial district is also located.

The start of the aggregation process that will lead to the occupation of these lands takes place at the beginning of the Iron Age (9th century BC). The settlement system of the Late Bronze Age (12th-10th century BC) was instead characterized by small settlements located along the coast.
In the 6th century BC it lived its period of maximum splendor, coming to host many thousands of inhabitants, with an acropolis, a necropolis, several port and industrial districts. It was equipped with an imposing wall.
In Roman times, the Latin historian Tito Livio informs us that in 205 BC. 🇮🇹🤓
Populonia was an ancient Etruscan settlement, named Fufluna (from Fufluns, the Etruscan god of wine and intoxication) or Pupluna, the only Etruscan city built along the coast. The name of the Etruscan city is known from its coins but has been interpreted differently.
According to some it takes its name from a god Fufluns, so it would mean "the city of Fufluns". The word was written in the Hellenistic period with the Etruscan letter F, only then introduced. Before that, Etruscans and Romans wrote a P which, however, read F.
On the other hand, Pliny refers to a statue of Zeus in Populonia carved from a vine, very old for having a stem that allows a statue and someone has suggested that the wine growing was called Fufluns. But there are those who think differently and it is not just anyone.
Iuno Populonia was the Goddess who gave birth to children, but Populonia was the Latin translation that concerned both the "poplar" and the "people", both called "Populus" and it is difficult for Iuno to be associated with the cult of a male God, so much so that the goddess Populonia was responsible for births.
But there is more, because the new moons (calends) were sacred to Juno, while the full moons (ides) were sacred to Jupiter, certainly a more archaic cult in which the dark side (neomenia) of the Moon Goddess was manifested. Jupiter is the day and all that is visible, Juno is the night and all that is invisible.
The dark side of the Goddess concerned the Underworld and therefore death, the luminous side was instead that of the births of men, animals and vegetation, therefore an allusion to the cult of a Great Mother who gives life, makes it grow and gives death.

Riccardo, you are now the Ambassador for central Italy promoting this region, and we are truly blessed to experience it with you. This area of Italy is so vast and you are still discovering new towns everyday. This small town is precious by it fortress and panoramic view on top of it. I enjoyed video, thanks.

Thank you dear Esther - your words are very kind. There's indeed SO much to discover here... from time to time I'm venturing a bit farther (also due costs restraints of course, as I can't afford to travel so much and so often), but central Italy has still a LOT to offer... What's fascinating is that very few people associate Tuscany with «seaside», myself included, and I've been to Italy twice. And if it wasn't for this channel, I'd still think that Tuscany is landlocked in the upper-center of Italy. Great history, and great views from the top, wow! Major brownie points for the 4x4 Panda at 16:45. 😉

@@StillWanderer In all seriousness, Italy owes you a debt of gratitude. Sure, Roma, Venezia and Firenze have a LOT to show, but only visiting these is like going to the US and only visiting New York or LA. Visiting Italy means following the road less travelled, and you're quite the ambassador for that. The format of your vids not only show the towns, but give the viewer some interesting historical facts that, to me at least, generate a real desire to visit and learn. You should be paid by the tourism office to do these.

Kilise çok sade ama kaleden etrafa bakmak harika . Великолепные панорамные виды и само расположение Populonia!
Уютный, тихий и симпатичный городок с интересным Этрусским музеем и Rocca!
