House Cleaner Fired for Overcharging - Homeowner Feels Cheated

  • The house cleaner got fired for overcharging, and the homeowner feels cheated. Was it a case of overpromising on the walkthrough that resulted in being fired for overcharging?
    Maybe the maid was overconfident or just didn't know how to price the job. Be careful not to set unrealistic expectations, or you get fired for overcharging when you have to up the price, or you get paid, but the client feels taken advantage of.

    I am the homeowner. I want to give as much additional information here as possible, in no particular order. Angela's analysis of the situation is spot on. Additionally the video comments are extremely informative. I've learned valuable information regarding dealing with service providers and getting more precisely what I want in future exchanges. I did not throw an online tantrum. The cleaner did extremely good work as I noted in the email to Angela. The cleaner's cell phone rang several times during the 8 hours that she was there with people looking for a house cleaner. At one point I heard her say something to the effect of, "other cleaners may not do everything that I do" so she knows she does great work. She may be trying to sell caviar to people who are looking for salmon in a fried catfish neighborhood. I will be finding someone to maintain the house on a regular basis, but it won't be her. Again, she did fantastic work, but I got this weird vibe from her that she believes she's so good that she merits substantially higher rates than her competitors. That's never a good look for a salesperson or a company. As one of the commenters noted, I DID end up with a very clean house, for which I'm grateful. Also I did declutter all of the horizontal surfaces before she arrived to make her job as easy as possible. The toilets were in bad shape to the point I was ashamed of them. The rest of the house was dusty with lots of cobwebs. Finally, I'm am single, with no pets. I'm an over the road truck driver and am home about 5 days per month. The 5 days are always in a row and are typically towards either the beginning or the end of the month. The rest of the time the house is mostly closed up. However for a number of years my elderly parents have partially used my house during the summer months, hosting a few large family parties and dinners, which I may or may not be present for. The past few years my parents simply couldn't clean up after themselves as well as they once did. I have little time to clean the 5 days per month I'm home, and things grew to the point where I had to do something. Having now watched a substantial number of Angela's videos, I now have a great idea where the potential pitfalls of hiring a housecleaner are and how to protect both myself and the future cleaner from stumbling into them.

      That's the worst when you underbid a job because you realize how daunting of a task you are about to take on. When you do a walk through you do your best to gauge time, but not till you get started do you realize how much work is needed. I've done home that have taken me 12 hours and only charged $300 and I was sickened by how long I had to work to ensure that it was done right and could stand behind my work.
      Deep cleans are a double edged sword but its completely inappropriate and absurd to ask for more at the end of a job with no warning! And seriously $500 for 6 hours??? That's even more absurd

      Having a quote, a budget, etc. isn't inappropriate at all. Bait and switch and gouging is what's inappropriate. Personally, if I was the customer, the cleaner would have walked out of there with $500 and a bad review on whatever referral site she was found on.

    I feel because the housecleaner specifically said she doesn't charge by the hour but by the job, her price was final. It doesn't matter that it was taking " longer than she expected ". She isn't charging by time but by job. Therefore her original price should've stood, which was still high considering it took only 8 hrs to complete. But no matter, because they both agreed on her price at the beginning. The most she should've been paid was $500.

    Some housecleaners do not communicate properly. After losing my regular cleaner, I hired a new one rec'd by a friend. My original cleaner did a maintenance clean in about 3-3.5 hours in a 1400 sf house on her own. The new cleaner quoted me "$20/hour and I bring a helper." They cleaned very well in about 3 hours and did things my retired cleaner did not (because those are things I do myself which I explained to the new cleaner), but at the end she charged $40/hr for the two of them. I mentioned the discrepancy and she said she told me she brings a second person, as if that would explain it. I have not called her back because of poor communication.

For whatever reason she needed a helper...I am not sure when you explained which things you do yourself, before or in mid-clean, but they should have not done those if you had already explained. I own a cleaning service in Iowa City Iowa. I have been on the scene since 2016. I can say that even though this video is 3 years old, $700 is extremely overpriced when it comes to a 2000 ft² home. The most I have ever charged is around $700 and that was for a move out cleaning of a very very large home, that was around 5000 ft². So when it comes to this home that they're talking about, there's no excuse to have charge that much. Personally, when I give an estimate to a client, I give them a number, and then I lay it out for them The guidelines of what is expected on both of their part as well as my own, in order for the price to stay what it is. I always let them know that if it does increase, it won't increase drastically. And even if it does increase drastically I would let them know before I would even continue cleaning. That way if they decide not to go with the price then they don't get stuck with a large bill, and I can sleep at night.

    Yes, Thomas. It was 10000% unprofessional. You should tell everyone you know to avoid those scam artists who "price by the job" instead of by the hour. She should do excellent work, priced by the hour. The Customer should NOT be required to ask "what if the price has to go up"? The maid should have stuck to her quoted price - even if it was at a loss. If you choose to "charge by the job", then you MUST stick to that job price. This is why the ethical thing to do is quote the PER HOUR rate, and then estimate the number of hours needed.

If you would of tell me I will charge you extra I would of laugh and nope that was not the agreement and would not paid extra. This is why it’s so so important to have a written contract with detail on what is expected with price.

    Wow! A 200.00 increase which was charged at the END of the clean!? Some customers wouldnt pay it and consider that a scam. She is lucky.
    I understand that cleans go over the alotted time but I consider it unethical to do what she did. It's great that she did a good job and his home was cleaned. Atleast he did get what he wanted. I don't think he should bad mouth the cleaner. If he wants to use her services again or refer her he should just tell them that they need to nail down the price like you say either in writing on a contract or by text. When we do a walk through we have a special checklist for the type of clean that that particular client wants and at the bottom of the list we mark any comments for areas they may not want cleaned or for extra things that they want done. Some of her time could have been saved if she had stayed out of the rooms that he told her not to clean. It's not his fault she chose to do them.
    Great video- as always!

      I am the customer in question. In the review I posted on Home Advisor I said "with exceptional cleaning results expect an exceptional price" and left it at that rather than throwing an online tantrum. The toilets were in poor condition-- water rings, gunk on the outside, lots of dust and cobwebs. I was really ashamed of their condition. There was a fair amount of grease on the kitchen stove. The vanities, kitchen countertops, end tables and coffee table were completely decluttered prior to her arrival to make her job as easy as I could. When I hire a cleaner again in the future for maintenance I will follow Angela's advice to the letter! After the second extremely negative reaction to mentioning the $700 price she sprang on me at the end, I started saying to other friends and relatives that it was "very expensive but I'd rather not mention the price," in order to protect myself from being immediately haranged over and over again. On the positive side I'm glad I now have an exceptionally clean house, which I am keeping that way. I did learn a lesson. It did not break my bank. I do find the extreme negative reaction to the idea of overpaying for housecleaning a bit over the top compared to other goods and services that people might overpay for.

The most that I have ever charged was $60/hr for and 8 hr project..for the future a home your size should never cost more than $500 and thst would include a deep oven and refrigerator clean which let's face it, can jack up a price quickly. If she had to clean heavily soiled blinds or grout work thst would also jump a price, but for all those line items a house that size plus the add on would typically take 8 hours.

    If the median wage for hire in that area were $30-35 per hour, 8 hours should have been just over $240. $500 , the original agreed upon price would have been more than fair at $50 per hour.

    • @AskAngelaBrown

      The $50 per hour is not really the issue, many house cleaners charge that. It's the bait and switch that triggered the anger. If a customer is quoted a price, the cleaner should honor the price - or alert the homeowner with advance notice so they have a right to accept or decline the additional charges.

    Love this info; you’re making me want to possibly hire a home cleaner now with the brutal and honest tips and expectations we should look forward too and ask of.
    Yes, neighbors are my go-to. I decided not to hire an HVAC company due to a trusted neighbor mentioning they didn’t like how they tried to charge them more on “this and that and they didn’t do a good job” and they also referred me to an honest, fair plumber 😊
    Also, it would be a good idea if the professional home cleaner presented the price to both owners of the home (if both present for the walk through, I think so that no one heard any different. I say this only because when my husband and and I moved into our new home, we had a dead tree and some landscapers or people who trim bushes etc., solicited us to cut it down (we said ok but didn’t need the stump removed) and after some time, my husband was talking to one of the workers and I was also chatting with the other worker in separate parts of the yard-
    well, they came by the next day while I was at work and they told my husband that I SAID I wanted the stump removed and my husband was confused at first but said ok and he paid them. I was upset since I felt lied about and to and I said from now on, major things or projects- we need them to tell us both the quote or service they will do. Lesson learned.
    Unfortunately or maybe fortunately (?) I’m the type that if something leaves a bad taste in my mouth, I won’t use the service again but I keep my opinion to myself unless asked about it.

    • @AskAngelaBrown
      @AskAngelaBrown  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hey Random Queen TV, thanks for the kind words and your tips. You are correct, you need to have the quotes be on paper and you need to sign the quote. This will keep the service from "adding on" later or charging you more without a conversation and a new signature. It is unnerving when you agree to one price and then are asked to pay another.

  • @kvs-adonai5214
    @kvs-adonai5214 4 ปีที่แล้ว +13

    As a professional house cleaner, I abide by my initial quote based on the client’s needs and the status of the home at that time. I always add the caveat of the chance for there to be additional costs in case the home isn’t in a similar condition when I arrive to clean it and I even discuss any price changes before I begin cleaning. If it is filthy to begin with, it is my job to price it accordingly. If I made the mistake of not timing my efficiency correctly, then that is a lesson for me to learn, not for me to charge the client extra. The house cleaner should have been able to price it correctly from the start...and if she realized the time and cleaning wasn’t balancing out (even when she arrived) that’s when she should have stopped what she was doing and spoke with the homeowner about the situation and provided options for him to decide on. That’s customer service at its core, and this business is no different from any other service in that regard.

      In this particular instance, she did throw out comments that it was taking longer than she thought. I guess she thought that was enough.
      I knew someone who called a maid service and the owner was busy so she sent her best cleaner to estimate the job. The cleaner offered to undercut the owner's price and my friend accepted and paid her directly while the "best cleaner" told her boss the service was declined. thought it was sketchy on both sides of the deal but my friend blamed the company owner for not coming to see her personally. For some people it's what you can get away with.

I stewed for several days and called him to say I wasn’t happy with the job. The door he installed would not lock because the mechanism didn’t line up. He said to call him in a few days to see if I was still unhappy. I said, no, I am unhappy and want it corrected. He said he would talk to me in a few days. He didn’t call. Two weeks later I told called him and told him again how unhappy I was with his work. Then I told him I was going to start over with a different with a new door and a new contractor. I just started my business 7 months ago, and I’m finding these videos so helpful.
    Early on I lost a client due to poor communication and it was my bad-it was embarrassing, but thankfully the customer was a good human, and I used the feedback to iron out my game and tighten it up. Lesson learned. 😬
    I’m still trying to make my game super tight and reliable, upfront with no surprises though.
    I haven’t ever bid by the job because I haven’t found that spaces have consistency-a home with dogs and kids that isn’t really touched outside of when I’m there just takes significantly longer than one that is kept by a professional neat and tidy couple with no pets who clean in the times I’m not there. 🤷🏻‍♀️
    But as I’m improving my tools and equipment I’m getting faster with the hacks, but the value delivered is the same for the customer, so I’m trying to figure out how to make sure that my pricing reflects my growing experience as well as investment in my supplies. While I have only been doing this full time for 7 months, I have been a detail cleaner in a variety of other capacity for over a decade, usually though just as a side gig here and there for under the table cash when we needed it.

      Hi Willow, Thanks for joining the Savvy Cleaner program. Course #4 will cover pricing. And the courses that you'll really want to focus on are courses #12 - How to Ace a Walkthrough, #13 - Maintenance vs. Deep Cleaning and #14 Upsells and Special Projects. Those courses will help you clarify with the customer expectations about the job being delivered. It will also help you as a cleaner understand exactly what your company does on a maintenance vs. a deep clean - and you will stop doing a deep clean for the price of a maintenance clean. And last it will help you put packages together that include items cleaned that are not part of your deep clean or your maintenance clean.
      Also go through course #5 on Employee Handbook - this breaks down for you as the business owner the rules and regulations of your business and how your business operates from day to day. When customers, or employees wonder "do you work weekends? or do you offer this type of service? Do you serve this type of cleaning?" You will know the answers and you won't have to reinvent the process each time you answer the questions.
      NOTE: If you are reading this and you are not part of the Savvy Cleaner program, you can learn more about it here: savvycleaner.com/join

    Hi Angela loving your videos, learning so much. I am a self-employed housekeeper. My question is should I charge by the job or by the hour? I typically charge by the job but I have been told by several people I am under charging. I also feel like if I charge by the hour I would not be profiting anyting. Please help me out decide. Thank you and have a blessed one

      Starting out I recommend charging by the hour so you don't leave money on the table. Once you know your numbers and you have your systems in place and you know how long (approximately) a job will take, switch to charging by the job, it will make the bidding process smoother.

    If it's a "job price" doesn't that mean that if something happens that you still have to stay within the range you told him. If you had to stay longer than you think then isn't that your problem? Not good. I wouldn't rehire this person again.

    Here it's kind of priced by hour and job, if that makes sense. Like for my fireplace, it was still the hourly rate but extra for the additional work & product. Pricing has never been my issue, it's finding a cleaning person who actually wants to clean is the problem. I've had the same team for a few years. I'm not always mobile, so looking deep isn't always done. I moved my canisters on the counter to find no one had cleaned behind them in I don't know how long. There was a blanket if dust back there.

    Good video. I'm a homeowner and I have a vacation rental. Also, sister is a house cleaner. There is no way I would have paid $700. That was not the deal. Unless there is a contract, that's not happening. Also, even the initial price to begin with sounds quite high. It's Arkansas and $500 for several rooms? On a per hour, you're looking at maybe $30 p/h, so even at 8 hours you aren't close to $500. I think the house cleaner is going to end up with less business from this.

    She should have said this job is DEEP CLEANING. Not normal cleaning. So that requires more scrubbing & chemical use to get it up to snuff. More chem use, might mean 5 bottles of spray instead of 1, and soaking, going back scrubbing, more chem use, more soaking, then scrubbing until its off the object. For what she was making per hr she should have come back to finish it and kept that price she quoted. If she ran into a problem show the guy whats not getting clean and how you have been working on stains/rings, dried on stuff etc. She shouldn't have been on cell mult times. She could have renegotiated if she showed him what wasn't coming clean. Maybe say I've tried everything short of a jack hammer and its not clean. I need to come back with diff chems. He might understand why the higher price then. But don't spring it on him at the end. Show him 5hrs into the job whats taking so long and why you need to charge more. He could say leave it and finish, or say ok I understand come back.

      There are so many house cleaners that bid jobs and don't set realistic expectations - or they miscalculate the time needed to do the job right. There is also a lack of communication about pay and what happens if the job goes over the budgeted or quoted amount. You are correct - so many things could have been different with this situation. :-)

    One humble opinion, sometimes that owners don’t realize is that
    Homeadvisor charge a lot for one lead they sell to us, in California I pay between $36.50 to my last one yesterday from the city of Mountain View was close to $63.00 that is a lot of money, so we have to charge fair prices to cover all expenses like,
    Homeadvisor
    Employee
    Supplies
    Our time
    Insurance-license
    Commuting
    Gas
    An on and on
    They could hires someone who is not very good at cleaning and those that do the job right but costly, which one would you prefer?
    Also, it happens to me that I have a lot experience I calculate X time and end up putting more than what i first thought, you think is going to be easy but not something come up and you have to do it not cut corners because that is you letter of recommendation, right!!!!
    Next time you hire someone scheduled a walkthrough beforehand in order to discuss details and prices

    I charge by the hour and if I need more time I will charge my hourly rate. This is discused with the home owner before hand so there is nothing added at the end without us both being aware. The reason I do not charge by the job is because when you see it before you clean it people tend to tidy up. But on the day of the clean their home is a hot mess. So I charge hourly. With over 30 years in this line of work I can say what it will take me without going over by much if at all. I don't go by the size of the house either. I go by how much work I will have to do to keep it up.

    • @AskAngelaBrown
      @AskAngelaBrown  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The house could have cost more due to unforseen circumstances - but the customer should have been alerted and given the chance to accept or decline the upcharges before the work was done. It is the way the job was handled that caused the problem.

    • @ThyrzaSegal
      @ThyrzaSegal ปีที่แล้ว

      That is why I never use useless middlemen either- I don't know what home advisor charges but I want to pay the person who cleans - not the entity that thrives off the sweat of the cleaner. ESPECIALLY when that useless middleman charges more that 5%. The middlemen charge up to 50% and it is unethical.

    Why do I get the feeling his house turned out to be far filthier than the cleaner realized and quoted for? Hidden pockets of grime behind stored junk? That's a minefield for an inexperienced person scoping that out. Personally, I'd have taken photos of any unexpected glory holes and approached the home owner with these as I found them. I would have agreed to honour the original price (my mistake) but asked if they would consider a discretionary additional payment. Then there's damage limitation - it would mean you could show anonymous pics of what you'd cleaned in promotional material, no naming and shaming, but proof of the great work you can do.
    My ex consistently undercharged for difficult and often delicate renovation projects we took on while trying to run our small business. I always pitched in higher than him unless it was a known quantity as I KNEW time was a fanciful guideline for him. I took before, during and after pics for promotional purposes, and we did beautiful work. However we were naive and ran it as a small industrial coating business when it really should have been a bespoke coating renovation company. House cleaners would do well to recognize these potential distinctions too.

    If you quote a price for the total job, that's the price. I would never have paid an extra $200. And trying to pull that would mean they're not coming back either. What *would* be reasonable IMO would be to mention that it was much more involved than you estimated, and adjust for the two rooms not done. As long as they were actually working hard during that time, I'd appreciate a job done well and sticking to their word. So they'd get the other two rooms. The time it takes only matters if it's an hourly quote. Honestly, this just tells me to get a written quote.

    She said she would clean the house for a certain price range. She said she charges by the job, not by the hour. She should NOT have skipped any areas she was supposed to clean, “saving them as a ‘upsell’ for a maintenance clean”, because the customer was not obligated to have her back. Even if he did have her back for regular cleaning, she should have finished the original areas that needed deep cleaning when she came back, with no further charge. Or, better, she should have returned another day to finish the deep cleaning if it was taking longer than she expected and she had to leave, and not expect payment until the job was complete.
    She worked him like a ho with all her manipulating and breadcrumbing. He was susceptible bacause he was ashamed about the condition of his house.

    Hi Angela, I’m looking for some input. I let go of a client recently. Her 3000 sq ft air bnb sleeps 10 and I was 100% responsible for the home. Cleaned the fridge, did the laundry took trash out, shoveled walk ways. 1-2x a week. I was charging $40/hr because when I started cleaning she hadn’t told me it would be an air bnb and I never once raised my rates. She bought a second home, and is planning to list that as well and wanting me to cohost. I raised her rates to $50/hr and said I need to bring help in order to get through it faster as I was regularly taking 6-8 hours to do it. The client FREAKED out when I left the price change notice, called me and was incredibly degrading and talked down to me. Saying SHE doesn’t even make $50/hr, and I kept trying to explain a 50/30/20 business model but in the end she had no desire to hear it and demanded to speak to other clients who are paying $50/hr. I can’t really do this for client privacy but also most clients are paying by job now, as they are residential and I know what to expect, but it’s a $50/hr average. Now the client has decided to end service, which I am okay with, but she’s trying to be incredibly manipulative to try and get me to remain at a $40/hr rate so that her profits remain the same, and I just can’t continue to justify the added stress, extra responsibility and the high maintenance client for what ends up being like $200-$300 a week.

    • @AskAngelaBrown
      @AskAngelaBrown  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Sometimes you have to stand your ground and know when to let go. It is ok to not be a good fit, than to deal with the stress and be miserable doing a job. You will find someone else that will be more than willing and happy to pay the $50. Ask yourself this, is it worth the stress or will you be better off walking away?

I’m not doing blinds or windows since they are extremely dusty. He said he’s willing to pay up to 500$ for the house and if I don’t finish it’s ok I also have a helper with me so we will be working 3.5 hours each. I would never have paid her the additional money. She quoted a flat rate to do the job. That means that she was going to do that job, for that amount of money, no matter how many hours it took for that amount of money. In business that's called a flat rate bid, and you never pay more than that amount. The person doing the bidding underestimates how long it's going to take, that's their mistake. At the point where she decided that she was not willing to finish the job for the amount she had quoted, she should have stopped and told him that, so that he could decide if he was willing to pay her more money to finish the job. Everyone wants someone who cleans well, however everyone also wants someone who they can trust to charge them what they say they will charge.

  • @sheralync5854

    huh. simple contract law. Fixed bid or time and materials contracts... Fix bid job is what the cleaner priced. She provided a range for the job(certain number of rooms) with a $500 cap. Contract = you do what you said what you were going to do for the price you said. You can't change a contract at will. There was no meeting of the minds with the upping the prices unexpectedly. This is why you ALWAYS get it in writing. Not the customer's fault she underestimated the work effort.
    The only way to change a fixed bid is to include in the contract a clause that allows renegotiation. Maybe something like "in light of changing information or conditions the bidder reserves the right to revisit scope of work and pricing, and the payer has the right of refusal" kind of thing.
    Not sure of what boiler plate contracts are out there, but if I was in the fixed bid business, it might be worthwhile to hire a lawyer to come up with your fix bid contract, especially around the re-negotiation clauses.

      @lorraine5582 as a cleaning company owner myself, who also offers organizing, I charge more for organizing. Organizing requires mental thought and often more physical work. You said that the common hourly rate for the local area- 30-35$/hr.To be generous let's say you pay her 40/hr. 40$ x 8 hours = 320$ is how much it should have cost. NOT seven hundred. I refuse to pay by the job for this reason-I will pay for supplies and even pay travel time but if you are not happy with an hourly rate I know it is because you expect over 80$/hr..She asked for- and got- 87.50/hr for her work that day. I would not hire her again either. the maintenance rate of 140$ would suggest that she would be spending 3.5 hrs at 40$/hr but you said she should finish it in 2.5 hrs- which brings her hourly rate to 56/hr. I have never gotten 56/hr at any job even with years of experience and expertise- why do I have to pay it? What burns me is that homeowners are seen as slave drivers when they won't pay "by the job". Do they think we have not got the skills to divide the fee by the hours they have been there?I don't think it is so awful to offer to pay a fair hourly rate.
