How To Remove Rust From Screws And Bolts

  • Remove most or all the rust from nuts, screws, bolts cheap and easy. I am working on cleaning up a free bike that I got. It was very dirty and rusty. A lot of the rust came off easily. Some of the screws were pretty rusty. So here is one of the tricks I use to remove the rust from them. I simply put them in a plastic bottle with some apple cider vinegar and shake them every once in a while. Very easy! You will have to remove the screws from the bike.

    I just overhauled 2 1984 vintage Tama drums where it had been neglected causing most of the Tom lug screws to rust very badly. This apple cider trick totally worked!! I left em in a bottle, went to work for 8 hrs, returned. All the screws are totally rust free and I'm happy!!! Thank you for posting!!!!

    This works! I used this on some air filter bolts for my car. I lost the original bolts for my car and I couldn't find any at the part house because they needed to match the bolt by looking at it. So I went to my local pull a part and found some for my car but they were extremely rusty so I was just gonna use them to match them up but I decided to do a little research to see if it was possible to remove the rust and I found this video. It took about 36 hours to remove the rust but it worked! Now I don't need new ones! Thanks for the video !

    anyone looking for confirmation:
    I used regular vinegar from my laundry room on the hardware from my skateboard. same technique, had it sitting for about 2 hours (got busy anyway) shaking every say 20-30 minutes. sometimes more. it's kinda fun to shake it around, that's probably not really the hardest part.
    worked impressively well, took off a good 60-70% of the rust which was way better than I expected.

    What about the bottle/bag mounts? I'm refurbing an old aluminum klein that has rusted steel mount inserts. I have cleaned them with wd40 and will be putting new screws back in, but im worried about the rusted inserts passing the rust onto the new screws and progressively getting worse. Cant soak them in vinegar, so do you think once I Loctite in the new screws ill slow the process sufficiently?

    • @RJTheBikeGuy
      @RJTheBikeGuy  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      The frame is aluminum and the inserts are steel? You could twist a paper towel up and get it in the hole, Thn drip a little vinegar on that. That will help dissolve the rust. The keep the insert greased up to keep it from rusting again.

    Why spray WD-40?

  • @belavet

    Wow... I jut bought a nice road bike that, for whatever reason, had about six screws that were really rusty. Looked pretty awful on an $800 MSRP bike... Decided to give this a shot before replacing them and it worked like magic!
    I was thinking of, instead of the WD-40, taking some clearcoat (made for metal by rustoleum) to the heads of the screws. The stuff is like $5 a can and made for car high heat car parts, so I would think that would be good. Any reasons NOT to do this?

  • @mikeO31082

    Would this work for removing paint or anodizing from screws as well?

    • @RJTheBikeGuy
      @RJTheBikeGuy  10 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      No. Vinegar eats iron oxide (rust on steel/iron). For paint, use a paint stripper. Why would you want to remove the anodizing from screws? Anodizing on aluminum is a controlled oxidation that creates a harder surface than the aluminum itself. Ammonia will eat aluminum oxide, but you might need industrial strength. Sodium hydroxide will probably eat the aluminum oxide, but will also eat the aluminum, so a quick soak in a warm water/lye soap bath might do it.

  • @patrickrenschler
    @patrickrenschler 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    how do you target rust that is inside screw holes. So not the screw itself but the hole the screw goes into. For now I just soaked some q-tips in evaporust and have them sitting in the holes but was wondering if you have any tricks!

      +CyborgNinja7 Well thank you, that explains ALOT lol. I Could have sworn the first time i did this about a year ago it worked perfectly. Just did it the other day, but to what must have been galvanized metal and it rusted like crazy when i took it out. (expensive bmw special dampening hex bolt) FML

    You're using a corrosion inhibitor. WD40 is one of the best brands that makes those. Long Term Corrosion Inhibitor. That can last metals up to 2 years.

    Do not. I REPEAT. Do not leave this sitting longer than 12 hours and then shake while closed!!! Goes off like a bomb. Hunting clothes ruined. Deer mounts ruined. Gun finishes eat up. Walls stained. DO NOT DO THIS INSIDE AROUND ALL YOUR VALUABLES. Eyes burning, clothes ruined, my basement is going to smell like apple cider vinegar for years

    • @halllow
      @halllow ปีที่แล้ว

      Sounds like the screws you tried this on were galvanized metal. Another comment explains why that shouldn’t be done because it makes small crystals on them that explode.

    • @RJTheBikeGuy
      @RJTheBikeGuy  10 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It's the phosphoric acid in Coke. Apple Cider Vinegar works much better.

    • @Draycos99
      @Draycos99 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, I use vinegar myself, but coke is probably cheaper and in more plentiful supply.

    • @mutantbaby1672
      @mutantbaby1672 10 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      The acid in your stomach is much stronger than that in coke. You viewed some shitty fear monger video about coke and now you're acting holier than thou when in fact you're just another moron on the net.
      Why don't you stop eating vinegar too, moron.

    • @Draycos99
      @Draycos99 10 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Hmmm, I didn't think about stomach acid - I'll just throw up next time my nut & bolts need de-rusting. Then again, when my mate threw up in my garden it _did_ bore a hole 3 feet deep, I might just end up melting my nut & bolts into a puddle of goo.
      I don't know if I can kick my litre-a-day vinegar habit just yet, but thanks for your concern Mutant Baby :)
