I suffer with epilepsy and didn't realize before I was diagnosed how many different types there are and how much it would effect my day to day life. I recently broke my nose and seriously injured my back during a seizure and had no idea til I came out of it hours later. Everytime I have a seizure it ruins my memory a little bit more aswell, I hope one day I get better and would love to be able to help others get through what is a really scary thing to be going through alone

I was diagnosed with absence seizures almost four years ago. I remember I would have these episodes where I would space out and become dizzy. At first me parents and I didn’t know what was going on. One day I was getting ready for work, and one of these episodes occurred. My mom decided to take me to the hospital to figure out what was going on. They started out running some tests to see if I was sick or something. All the tests came back fine. As we were leaving I had another one of these episodes. The doctors decided to keep me overnight to monitor me. They ran an EEG, and the results of that came back that I was having seizures

I understand that the EEG shows up as abnormal when a person is prone to seizures. Do you have moments of time you can’t recall? It can appear to others as though one is distracted for a moment or two and nothing more. I’ve had these type of episodes for months now and the neurologist has ordered an MRI to rule out a brain tumour which can also cause seizures. I’m also prone to dropping things quite suddenly which may be another sign. I’m on low dose seizure meds for essential tremor so if I’m having absence seizures they may not be adequate. Do you take medication?

This videos is informative in many ways, but is also omits an extreme amounts of information.
The sentence starting with “As absence seizures are very short…” is informative to an extent, yet it lacks to inform that absence seizures can last for a whole day for some people (myself included).
Regarding the part whether you should call an ambulance or not depends entirely on the situation and the individual. Most of us do (or should!!!) carry emergency-meds with us, and have contacts to call if we have these prolonged seizures.

I think my fiancee suffers from absence seizures. But I cannot convince her something is wrong. About 3 weeks ago, I think she had seizure while walking towards me but then sort of started losing her balance and went sideways and hit the wall with her left shoulder, then fell backwards and smashed her head on the floor. It was terrifying. She has no recollection of it nor helping her to bed. She promtly fell asleep. I feel like her seizures are different, because I notice a definite difference in cognitive ability, balance loss and speech impediments. These intensify during the day. Her whole personality changes and she sort develops a vacant like look in her face and eyes. They appear glazed over. It is driving me nuts. I cant get her to go see a dr. But now she cannot deny the evidence of the fall. She bled a bit from the back of the head.

      Hi Yvette
      Thank you for your message.
If you think you may actually be having absence seizures, it would be a good idea to speak to your family doctor about this.
In the UK, if they think you might have epilepsy, they will usually arrange for you to see an epilepsy specialist at the hospital. This is to make sure you get the right diagnosis and have the best treatment for your epilepsy. The epilepsy specialist is usually a neurologist.
Epilepsy diagnosis and may be a little different if you live outside the UK.

      Hi

      Thank you for your message.

The main treatment for epilepsy is epilepsy medicines. These are sometimes called anti-epileptic drugs or AEDs. They don’t cure epilepsy, but try to prevent seizures from happening. Many people find that their seizures stop with the first or second medicine they try.

Most people with epilepsy will need to keep taking epilepsy medicines for the rest of their life. If they stop taking them, their seizures will return. However, some types of epilepsy last for a limited time and the person eventually stops having seizures.

There are others treatments for epilepsy, such as epilepsy surgery. Some people who have epilepsy surgery find that the surgery stops their seizures completely and permanently. But unfortunately, not all epilepsies can be treated with surgery, and not all epilepsy surgeries are as successful as this.

We have more information on epilepsy and epilepsy treatments here:

    • @epilepsyaction

      Hi

There are many different epilepsy medicines available in the UK (www.epilepsy.org.uk/info/treatment/uk-anti-epileptic-drugs-list). We can't say which medicine is the best as everyone is different and what works well for some people may not work for others. When your specialist is deciding which one will best suit you, they will consider things like:
      • The types of seizure you have, as some medicines are only effective for certain types of seizure
      • Your age and sex
      • Your lifestyle
      • Any other medical conditions you have
      • Any other medicines you take
It would be best to talk to your specialist regarding you treatment.

      Dear Accalia

Thank you for your question. I can not say why you pass out if you have a diagnosis of absence epilepsy. Typical absence seizure you will be unconscious for a few seconds. You will suddenly stop doing whatever you were doing before it started, but will not fall.

The other type of absences seizures are Atypical absences. These absences are similar to, but not the same as, typical absences. They last longer, and they start and end more slowly. You might be able to move around, but your muscles might go limp or ‘floppy’, making you clumsy.
It may be best to talk to your epilepsy team. Epilepsy is a very individual condition and they would be best to confirm your type of epilepsy.

Its been happening for 3 years now,
then 3-4 days ago I had a full tonic- clonic seizure in the morning for the 1st time... my sister saw it , I was sleeping amd suddenly I began jerking , My lips turned blue, eyes rolled to a side and I bit my tongue..
Of course I was unconscious after this , and don't remember anything of the seizure , my sister described it to me, only I had headache and body ache throughout the day and felt tired and sleepy
I did go for an MRI , which came back normal
Could someone please tell what is all this..it would be of great help

@@chanabayla1823 Thank you so much for answering, actually I didn't visit a doctor in the two years since I didn't know how to describe my signs / symptoms to him/ her , after I got to know about different types of seizures, found the exact wordings to describe the thing,I did go to a neurologist a few weeks ago and she has suspected its Juvenile Absence Epilepsy, am on levera 500 mg now, got my eeg done and am waiting for results ...
      Thank you so much again..

@@mkdutta9428 you're welcome. Keep in mind that unless you seize during the eeg or your brain wants to etc, the eeg will most likely be normal. This however doesn't mean you don't have epilepsy. It's better in my opinion to be misdiagnosed if u will and be medicated then not to err on the side of caution especially if you black out. Stay on top of this even if highly controlled, know your triggers, etc this is a very unpredictable illiness and not to scare you unnecessarily but sudep though rare is real. I know this sucks believe me but u got this. Let me know if need anything

Thank you so much for this,You are so caring, I had a sleep deprived eeg I physically didn't feel anything during my eeg, that is did not blank out but does that mean my waves too would be normal? I was told to fall asleep, but I was only semi asleep , drowsy but could hear everything so will it affect test results ? Also during photic stimulation I did feel as If I am travelling in some moving vehicle, like the ground/bed under me were moving, so what was that. I,hope my abnormal waves( if any) do come out , so that I get perfect treatment, I suffered 2 years unknowingly and wouldn't in my wildest dream think that I was having seizures all this time..., I searched for answer for 2 years and am greatful and thankful for all the people who helped me recognize this and my parents, Doctor ,sister, friends everyone who support me And even if the recording does come out normal, I hope I won't be stopped on my meds because I still blank out sometimes after being 1 month on med and the side effects are really difficult to handle sometimes coz I feel sleepy after taking it and if I don't sleep I ferl my seizure coming , have a depressed mood, my entire body sometimes has tremors, I feel numb in my hands and feet , so shld I wait for 2- 3 months to adjust? Also since meds I mostly felt my seizure coming ( the aura) etc. that feeling but didn't blank out, I did blank out 2, 3 times but very briefly for 4-7 secs maybe, and my doc has told to take the medicine after 12 hrs interval, so I take at 8 morn, 8 night, sometimes it becomes a little late like 8:10, so will it have any effect?, also sudep, what are the risk factors for it,
Thank you once again, and If I have any doubts I hope I can ask again, You take care as well...🙂
PS: 2 things that scare me thd most:
Since I recently took admission in college , If I hace a full seizure there then...
      2) Since epilepsy is highly stigmatized, what if people will not be friends with me anymore, though it hasn't happened yet, but still....
Also I have anger issues , like when I get angry I feel like taking it out physically, is it realted to my condition, also a year ago I think I was depressed, I didn't get diagnosed( I have a fear of doctors, its weird but I feel guilty to share my personal symptoms with them) but I did cry often, and had really many suicidal thoughts, guilt , hopelessness, worthlessness etc. not that I would lay on bed, unable to function properly, in between it had gone again , now its returned, not in that form , but mostly crying , feeling tired and lack of self worth and self esteem, bcz since my childhood, I used to cry on small things, and would take other's harsh words deeply.

Is it still an absence seizure if someone can get me out of it?

Hi, thank you for your comment. In most cases, if someone has a typical absence seizure, they won’t know what's happening around them, and they can’t be brought out of it. You can read more about absence seizures on our website. www.epilepsy.org.uk/info/seizures/absence-seizures. If you think you may be experiencing absence seizures or another type of epileptic seizure, it's a good idea to speak to a medical professional. You might find it helpful to speak to a member of our helpline team about this. You can call our helpline freephone on 0808 800 5050.

I’m truly not trying to sound rude, but I feel like you are enabling her to have some bad habit’s just because she is autistic….she doesn’t have to suck her thumb just because she is autistic….
