The song is based off of the writing of John Flavel in his work called "The Father's Bargain" if you are interested in reading his short writing. It is not a theological statement but a way for us to dig deeper into the wonder of God's beautiful love for sinful men.

Honestly Garret gets dangerously close to flat-out permissing homosexuality in the lyrics and in the interview he had- I can understand the need to not be so guarded against such individuals as Christians, not condemning them and yes helping when in need but still being firm on what the Bible clearly says is sin.
I'm suspicious of Garret's theology from here out. I honestly don't know how I feel about his views because like I said, he's dangerously close to condoning sin in some of the things he's said.

Never heard this band before, but I'm really enjoying that song. Reminds me a bit of some of Thrice's work. You should really do a reaction to anything Thrice really. Their lead singer, Dustin Kensrue, is heavily influenced by Christianity, philosophy and the works of C.S. Lewis. He was also the worship leader at Mars Hill Church when a lot of questionable things went down (that had nothing to do with him). I think it burnt him bad and it shows in the later Thrice material.

Fair warning, the song doesn’t support many biblical truths, if any.

I love this song. I love that the Son screams the line: "No one can contain the power and depths of my abundant love!" To me that is Christ responding in force to the workings of Satan with jealous anger. I also love the line: "Bring in all their sins; lay it all on me." I have been dealing with my wife's adultery the last couple of months, and I've been struggling with the crushing weight of her betrayal. In meditating on this song the last couple of days, it's moved me to lay her sin at the feet of Jesus for her for the purpose of seeking her salvation and freeing myself from its burden. Great analysis, Pastor Rob!

great video pastor Rob. What really hit me and pushed me into accepting Jesus as my savior was long ago when I read about the penitent thief. The thief acknowledging his sins and crimes while saying that Jesus had done nothing criminal. "Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom" He replies "Amen I say to you today you will be with me in paradise". I've always gotten goosebumps hearing that. great video, one of my favourite song of the band; never thought of the reversed roles there and it's indeed true, it was biblically God's (father) will; but then again, we cannot fathom how this "desicion" of Jesus dying for humanity was made, neither totally wrap our heads around the Holy Trinity and how they interact between them, so in my opinion the song it's just another way to recreate how this beatiful act of grace may had happened (or mostly may not due your points stated), putting the Father in the "wrath/justice" side and the Son in the "love/grace" side of the conversation.

Yeah it definitely makes it more understandable. And having in some of the same classes as them at Cedarville (especially Christian Life and Thought and Spiritual Formation) I can definitely see where they switched a few things up (without destroying the theology altogether) to make a little simpler and tell a better story.

I think that Wolves at the Gate is one of the few metal bands that started as Christian and have maintained that aspect consistently. Many of the bands have decreased their output of God and Jesus focused material, but Wolves at the Gate just keeps going. I love it.

For anyone interested, this song is based on a work from John Flavel, a 17th century clergyman.
The Works of John Flavel, Vol.1, "A Display of Christ in His Essential and Mediatorial Glory", 42 Sermons, Sermon Number 3:
"Here you may suppose the Father to say when driving His bargain with Christ for you.
The Father speaks. "My Son, here is a company of poor, miserable souls that have utterly undone themselves and now lay open to my justice. Justice demands satisfaction for them, or will satisfy itself in the eternal ruin of them."
The Son responds. "Oh my Father. Such is my love to and pity for them, that rather than they shall perish eternally I will be responsible for them as their guarantee. Bring in all thy bills, that I may see what they owe thee. Bring them all in, that there be no after-reckonings with them. At my hands shall thou require it. I would rather choose to suffer the wrath that is theirs then they should suffer it. Upon me, my Father, upon me be all their debt."
The Father responds. "But my Son, if thou undertake for them, thou must reckon to pay the last mite. Expect no abatement. Son, if I spare them... I will not spare you."
The Son responds. "Content Father. Let it be so. Charge it all upon me. I am able to discharge it. And though it prove a kind of undoing to me, though it impoverish all my riches, empty all my treasures... I am content to take it.""
