I was of the opinion that if their next release maintains the level of their past releases then (in my opinion) they will have surpassed Led Zeppelin as the best. In preparation of the next release I have recently been revisiting their full body of work. I am now galvanized by the opinion that this next release is inconsequential. Tool is the best, ever.

I love how listening to Tool is like being high...but clear minded
A lot of what they try to do with their music, especially with this song, is to open your mind to a higher way of thinking. Think outside the box and get out of your comfort zone. It’s very similar to people who get high to do the same thing. Not the ones who get high just to avoid life or to self medicate but to reach a higher understanding of oneself. What you said was simple but very close to the truth :)

My first real "experience" with Tool was on April 21, 2001 while storm chasing with a coworker who played the new Lateralus album during the chase. We chased a nighttime F4 tornado which destroyed part of the town of Hoisington, KS. This song was playing while we were watching the storm and made me an instant Tool fan from that moment. I had heard a number of Tool songs over the years, but this song took me to a place that seemed to capture the moment I was experiencing chasing that tornado.
What an incredible way to experience lateraled the first time 💯💯💯

Nope. Reasonable interpretation and valid subjectively, but the intention of the writers is different. The colors are a reference to occult alchemical symbolism. The alchemist moves through these colors spiritually/mystically/philosophically/intellectually/metaphorically while conducting corresponding chemical reactions that result in these colors in this order. It's a sort of scientific spiritual ritual not unlike old pagan ceremonial magic. There's a ton of alchemical symbolism in the rest of the song as well. "As above so below" is a line that makes it a dead giveaway.
I know this is an old comment, but it's never too late to learn something new. I would encourage you to inspect the lyrics more deeply, and follow the occult symbolism. Really dive into the meaning and do the required studying to understand it all. Perhaps even actually indulge in the symbolism and do the esoteric work...

I'm pretty sure that it should be regarded as peak Tool, everything after is kind of less of an evolution and more of a consistent sound. Prior to this Opiate -> Undertow -> Aenima were all building to what Lateralus was like

In this ways of faith, god is not a selfaware being. Its more like a primigenial force that ptoyect itself and creates everything, making every thing divine (even the rocks and animals for example).
So the human exploring the divinity is not about trying to reach god (the Cristian one) but too recognize that the human is part of a whole and not set apart of the rest of the universe.

People are overthinking and overanalyzing the part "red and yellow then came to be, reaching out to me, lets me see" in my opinion. When a child is first born it sees only in black and white. The next color is red then yellow. If you think about that in the context of the song it makes perfect sense. This represents growth which is a the main theme of the song really, always growing, learning or spiraling out

I'm pretty sure it is meant that way, meaning growth, but the colours weren't chosen at random (I'm pretty sure). Looking at the linguistic origin of colours, as a language we first distinguish black and white (light & dark colours) followed by red as a third and yellow as a fourth. If I'm not mistaken, that's why MJK chose those numbers. (There is an amazing video on yt, I believe by Vox, explaining how colours came to be in languages around the world)

Really liking this idea for a channel. There's a lot of stigma against metal in the Christian community due to the echoes of the old satanic panic. I personally have dropped away from structured religion and churches because of their controlling nature. I can't stand that, but I don't equate them to belief like so many do. Jesus was a nonconformist and broke against the flow and I don't deny him, I just deny the masses that enforce control in his name. My spirituality survives and thrives in its freedom from it.

Amen I feel the same exact way! I know not all churches are created equal and a lot of that Satanic references to Metal music came from prominent televangelists in the 80’s. These televangelists were nothing like my actual pastor growing up at church though. With that said though the mass hysteria constantly pumped out by similar televangelists today is why I barely attend church anymore. “It takes just a few bad apples to spoil the whole bunch” is a true statement.
The Fibonacci sequence is also found in nature in tons of different creatures and plants, pretty interesting.

I heard Tool for the first time in my mates car. The 1st song was stinkfist. Then I looked them up and found Lateralus. My mind was forever altered. Truly one of those experiences that you never forget.

Dennis Crider regardless of how “played out” it is, it’s still a fucking fantastic song. It being “played out” is one of the main reasons I found tool and delved deeper into their discography. And it has a lot of meaning to me, personally. So I don’t see how you deciding it’s overplayed makes the song any less good. That’s the second most hipster thing I’ve read all day.

This album is amazing and I remember losing myself to this entire album back in high school. This is possibly the finest musical composition I’ve experienced and each time I hear this song it gets inside me.
If you listen to the whole album especially songs like The Patient, and Parabola you see that Maynard is trying to engage in looking towards a higher state of consciousness and reflecting on an overall purpose for living.
Solomon from the bible did that same thing, and his conclusion was that purpose of a man is to eat, drink, be merry and find joy in your work and to fear the Lord.
@skyhigh315 To answer your original question - we should "fear" God in reverence and respect of His holiness. Assuming you believe in an omniscient, omnipotent being, shouldn't that be the case? If you don't believe in one, then it's a moot point and completely understandable that it doesn't make sense. To address your further point, in the original Hebrew this fear isn't meant as a cowering or dread of God, but rather a reverence for His sovereign holiness. Similar to a child fearing and respecting the power of a parent, but not the parent themselves (in a healthy relationship).

That's where I believe most people go wrong. Never in the song is it stated nor suggested that overthinking is a bad thing. What if separating the body and mind is the goal?

I agree with chuckie. I'm thinking the spiral of the Fibonacci Sequence is the path of life, and the random events are something that divert this predictable path. I think he was suggesting to embrace that change in our lives.

Hey guys, love the fact that you are looking at Tool and being so open minded and putting your own thoughts into it and trying to find meaning in the music. It's also amazing that you are applying the lessons of your faith to the lessons that I think Maynard tries to put into our minds as an audience. The one that I wanted to say in respect to what you were saying was on the discussion on the verse "swing on the spiral of our divinity and still be a human."
In respect to the verse, and in respect to the theme of the song. This verse is a humbling lesson. As humans, we are constantly on a path of discovery and invention, through our actions and our thoughts we are constantly in a processes of transcendence, and by this it is our own divinity that we exercise our own small stretch of power that we are able to use to bend and make and affect our surroundings and impact our world. The humbling truth is our divinity does not fathom the truth of the divine beyond what is attainable by our hands or our minds. And that our divinity, though we may see it as being great and mighty, is a scrap and limited for after all we are only human, and our only course to be more is to seek more and to "spiral out, keep going" to see further into the truth and to reach for greater.

The colors reference is what an infant sees first in the order he describes. That's why he says in my infancy. Its what most experts believe we see first are those colors.
I think its more about your mind expanding as you age or become enlightened.
I think its way deeper than that, tool's lyrics are rarely taken literally. Early languages could only describe light and dark, or black and white. Later on came red, mostly describing the color of our blood, then yellow came to be, describing the sun. For example blue didnt exist until recent times in vast majority of languages.

I think its probably more so like, black and white imply that one is seeing stark differences in things and dividing them. Ie good and evil. Two additional colors are expanding this mindset
Theres also something called “ the great work” which is an alchemical concept. There are four phases which are tied to the colors black -> white -> yellow -> red
sorry but if infants only see a few colours, they'd have something wrong with their eyes. We are not dogs or other animals that can't observe all the colours in the rainbow, only people with colour blindness have that problem, not infants.

The "horns" are innocuous, by the way. Ronnie James Dio popularized that gesture in the metal community long ago. Not sure if this has been mentioned already in your plethora of comments here but I think there's another point that deserves mention here. Maynard's writing process for lyrics with Tool are unique in that he never writes anything until the instrumentals are complete or nearly so. He immerses himself in the music before ever writing a word. I think this is important especially given the nature of this song.

You should be reading Genesis. Nothing then light. Black then white. Random is Chaos. Fibonacci / Golden ratio. Order. Thinking of these things is trying to understand the Divine. Over analysing separates the body from the mind. You can't understand the Depth of these things and still feel human. Try to talk to anyone about the scale of everything and still feel normal.
This song is about not overanalyzing, and it really is exemplified in the first verse. When you're born, you can only see blocky shapes of black and white. Within the first few months, your eyes develop enough to where you can see bright colors, with red being the first one to take shape. The first verse is very, very literal! That's the big hint that most of the lyrics should be taken at face value, especially since they explicitly talk about just enjoying the power of music.
Red is the lowest frequency color, followed by orange, yellow, then all the way up to violet 🌈 discerning higher and higher frequencies of color through ever-developing fresh eyes is literal enlightenment, you can recognize more types of light. And so, it can also be tied metaphorically to developing a greater and greater sense of consciousness.
Cave paintings? lol. He's being literal. We see only black and white when we are born. After the first few months of infancy, we develop the ability to detect red wavelength light, followed by yellow, etc. This is why infants are so enamored with fans. The movement of the blades against white ceilings are easily noticed by infants given its high contrast.

The two things I like the most about Tool: 1. It's an immersive experience. They redefine how rock/metal music is consumed. 2. They make you earn the right to "tap your toe" to their songs. The odd time signatures, and how Danny Carey hides them so well makes you have to listen to it over and over to be able to groove to it. Oh, and don't forget the GONG toward the end!
Lateralus, one of my all time favorite songs! I literally travel through space, dimensions and time at light speed listening to this. It’s a great voyage musically, lyrically and Maynard’s amazing vocals!

I have to say that I have received more of a spiritual connection to God through Tool than anything in my life. I saw them at aftershock a few weeks ago. I’m much older now, it took everything I had in me to go because I just was diagnosed with leukemia after I bought the tickets. As a matter of fact the very day after they released Fear Inoculum as a single. That song inspired me to be more positive and to “exhale” and “expel” the “contagion”. At the concert, however, I had tears most of the time. I got right up front and with this diagnosis every word meant something different this time and I have never felt so close to god than when they played Parabol/parabola. It was actually that feeling I always hoped to feel in church but never did. It was overwhelming. I haven’t checked to see if you have reviewed that one yet but if not I hope you do. Also the new album is beautiful perfection.
Next, you guys should react to the live version of Sober by Tool. It's amazing how crazy easy it is for him to hit the notes. His vocal range is truly amazing.
