This is the best American flag tutorial I've seen so far. As a U.S. Army veteran and fellow Michigander (Vassar) thank you. I thought about purchasing one off Etsy but felt the need to learn how to make one myself to hang in my game room. Awesome job sir.
Great build. Thanks for sharing. Do you have any tips for lining up the stars? Every video makes it look very easy but that has been the hardest part for me.
I make the flag long to start. Then I lay the union down on each side to see where it will lay the best. Trim the edges to size. Lay union down on side edge and roll it left to right. Shifting it and taping every few inches. It's never going to line up perfect, because your laying a flat stencil and a curving surface. Just line it up the best you can
Painted, they look odd if left wood colored. I don't paint the entire star. I leave the outside edge of each star, wood colored. Adds to the "rustic" look
0:02 Making it long to start with allows room for error and allows me greater flexibility to put the union in a spot with fewer flaws for the stars. It gives me almost 3 inches of left to right movement of the union to find its best location
Why would you make the “waves” so unnatural? No real flag waves in mechanically equal highs and lows with mechanically equal spacing. Why didn’t you strive for a higher result? Folks, may I suggest you look through the gobs of photos of waving flags in the wind, that are available online… and use this for reference. Start from reality, get reality results from all the hard work you’ve put into it. Your first flag will be a learning experience making your second flag faster, better, higher priced if you intend to sell these. Using your second flag as a template moving forward, you can paint them differently. One has a single blue stripe, one has a black, some are reversed flying right to left. You might consider adding logos of each branch of the military. It is my opinion that following a template designed from a real flag flying in the wind would bring superior results. Now it a matter of building it two ways. 1.) with a flat backside or 2.) carving the backside to follow the frontside. If you choose number 2… how thick you make it is your last decision. I’ve seen some that finished out about a 1/2” thick, and some much thicker. Your choice.
really? how OCD are you? it's artwork, like it or dont, its all opinion. it's intended as "rustic" not realistic. i really think you're putting way to much thought into it.... its a wall hanging after all

Are the stars painted after carving ? Or are they natural wood colored ?

@MichigansVicious thank you for replying, keep up the good work !!!!
Seems like you’re creating extra work when you cut the flag to length after all the cutting and sanding.

THIS IS AN AWESOME VIDEO!!! How much do you sell these for?
Right now they are gifts. Once I get incorporated I will sell for 200.00
Beautiful! These are worth much more than $200!
Any chance you have the link to the Amazon stencil for the stars? Or would you happen to know the mesurement?
