- The chain was rusted solid so we cut it off with a bolt cutters! It's a crunchy one, folks! This one took us down some difficult paths, but we stuck to the fundamentals and got it all working pretty darn good again! Stay with it until the end. There's a few little tips and trick along the way to help you out with your own projects.

I will always have a soft spot in my heart for the 90's Trek I could never afford back when. Handbuilt in Waterloo, Wisconsin ..steel..rigid..quality components..yeah!
I rebuilt an 850 mountain track from 1990 that was green two years ago .My current owned one is from 2009 , a silver and dark grey 4300 , which I custom rebuilt to a more capable specification . It was too small for the friend that impulse purchased it originally . I built them a Giant Yukon custom as a barter . I refurbished their daughter's Giant Sedona CX .
A few years ago I picked up a '93-ishTrek 950 MTB for $35 and made it into a drop-bar commuter. Lugged True Temper frame with Tange Big Fork had some rust but just sanded it and shot the spots with some random paint. It's a nice enough frame to get a re-finish if I choose.

What a cool bike. I went to unhook a V-brake today on an old bike and didn't notice one strand of the cable was frayed and poking out. That sliver of metal slid under my thumbnail...the pain! I will never be quick when unhooking V-brakes again hah. It sure is fun to give these old bikes some love so they function better than they have in decades.

So much of it is just problem solving. That's my favorite part of the job!
I find 7 and 8 speed drive trains have rather forgiving tolerances, and will still work fine even when pretty worn out. As long as the housings aren't damaged, or super worn they will still work fine. Sometimes I pop the ferules off, and trim maybe 1/2" or so from the end of the housing, and put on a new ferule if worn. That 1/2" is usually where the housings get corroded., and really wears out. I tend to just replace galvanized cables with SS. Cables and housings are some of the most over replaced items. Especially with 7-8 speed stuff, friction, and when your not dealing with high end 10-12 speed stuff that is a lot more sensitive to cables, and housings.

With a new chain , always check for cassette rejection of it , skipping and clunking under heavy load on the smaller cogs .Most instances , cassette and chain swaps done as a pair .

And I take out the reflectors on the spokes too but I read a lot of trails and stuff as well I've had him come loose and go inside the smokes I don't trust reflectors like that😅😅😅
I am off cycling at the moment as I am about to have surgery for a cyst which means a waiting game to ride again .
anyone who has had to load their bike into the back of their car in order to get to the park trial appreciates quick releases.
Especially in a bad neighborhood when leaving your bike out on a bike rack on the trunk or roof would be begging to have it stolen.

I use a small steel cable and lock on my saddle. Better than nothing.
I have a big box full of kick stands and new spoke protector discs in a second box .

Cables and housing are cheap. If it’s been outside and rusted any I would change them if possible
Quick releases are the most wonderful thing when you are taking your bike to the trails every day in a rough neighborhood. Leaving a bike on a rack is begging for it to be stolen so in the back seat is a much better option.

I am going to build my neighbour's children some new bicycles for the Spring season this week . They will be free "PHILANTHROPY" ones . I will use decent parts like Altus and Acera standard . They will be placed under a "maintenance agreement" for 12 months .
My custom made wheel lacing stands are tortionally stiffer and more solid than the Park tool ones with extra referencing features which are unique to my design . I have had them for 25 years and they have never missed a beat . My stand can accomodate 14mm BMX axles as well as thru axle mtb variations up to 22mn dianeter .
The faded dork disc is a pain to see in my eyes. I think it would be good if you removed it 😊
I would never just remove it. I would replace it. But this customer just wanted a rideable bike and we we’re already above budget. Compromise.
@@bkefrmr Deckas floating rotors that have coloured 7075 aluminium carriers are a good recommendation . Some of my clients like them and have given good feedback .
Free dork disk replacement would make there appearance more happy. A cheap sales point.

The term "sealed bearings" has irked me for a long time. It used to mean cartridge bearings but over time came to mean "a rubber seal on cup/cone assembly".

My nose got broken three spots two cops took me down to gravel road and beat me up for 30 minutes did I deserve it yeah maybe 10 minutes of it I was hogtied as well I'm a recovering alcoholic and drug addict with multiple years of sobriety but some people can't breathe through their nose I still can't and that happened in 2012
So educate us about the hidden mysteries of quick release wheels. About all I know is make damn sure the release is locked before launch.
I explain it in detail in other videos for sure. The problem isn’t education, the problem is most people aren’t able to understand things mechanically. Even if they know HOW to it, they don’t understand WHAT they are doing or WHY it’s designed that way. Quick releases make it too easy for the layman to do something I believe is best left to an expert.
@@bkefrmrhonestly I would rather have a quick release any day than normal nuts on their most people will be inclined to check the tightening of a quick-release than actually grab a crescent wrench or a wrench or socket but keep doing what you do I love your videos man they're very educational

Do people really think that new cables are going to make people actually take care of their bikes? That’s an interesting outlook on how things work, kinda delusional to. I’ve seen several of your videos and all that I’m really convinced of, is that people really treat their bikes like doodoo. (Cleaned up for TH-cam, but most people know what I mean)

Strange drop in audio for about two minutes in the middle (18:xx to 20:xx). More or less right after "good enough for who it's for." BTW, at some point, "who it's for" may be interested in your videos. I know it's probably other mechanics and wannabes like myself watching your channel, but maybe some of your customers would get a kick out of seeing you work on their bikes. Just a thought, maybe not a brilliant one.

How do you clamp onto a carbon seatpost when putting it in the bike stand. Is there a certain max clamp pressure you need to be aware of? Thanks
