    Ok I got a new plug and tried it but still nothing. Then I added the oil and tried it still with the same result. I'm not a mechanic but I can normally get one started at least for a second. I don't have a compression gage but just putting my thumb over the plug hole it feels strong. There's also good pressure coming out of the exhaust and the pull rope has good tension if that matters. Thank you for your time I really appreciate it.

    Thanks! Just ripped into my carb. Had dead spot from 0 - 1/4 throttle. Cleaned everything as shown and bam! Works like it should. I just bought this Polaris and it had sat for a few years. Lots of white flake stuff inside. Thanks for the video.

    Nice clean up :-)
    The emulsion tube does come out, the pin is a locator for the slot down the side of the emulsion tube, also the main jet+washer tightens onto it to stop the tube from escaping upwards.
    Allways enjoy your videos mate :-)

  • @sixtyfiveford
    @sixtyfiveford  11 ปีที่แล้ว

    Yep, you have a Mikuni. MIC is the abbreviation for Mikuni. An ebay one will work just fine. You should be able to get an entire kit with needle, seat, jets, gaskets etc for $20 on Ebay. Search by " carb rebuild polaris and you model name" it will pull up a few. Match up the year and go from there.

  • @sixtyfiveford
    @sixtyfiveford  11 ปีที่แล้ว

    That sounds right. There are several grooves for the c clip to go into. If you removed the c clip then you should start with it in the middle slot. If you didn't remove it don't move it.

  • @sixtyfiveford
    @sixtyfiveford  11 ปีที่แล้ว

    It only takes a tiny amount of gas to make it fire (2-3 drops). More than this and it will flood and it wont fire. Second I would try it with a different spark plug to eliminate that the plug is shorted. If neither of these work then the compression could be to low. To test this pour a tablespoon of motor oil down the plug hole and pull over the engine a few times without the plug. Then put a few drop of gas in and reinstall the plug. With the choke OFF try to see if she starts.

  • @sixtyfiveford
    @sixtyfiveford  11 ปีที่แล้ว

    An engine will feel like it has compression even if it is to low. There is a point at which the engine just won't fire because of too low of compression. Most auto parts stores will rent you a compression gauge for free(Autozone, Oreillys, etc). What year is your machine?

  • @sixtyfiveford
    @sixtyfiveford  11 ปีที่แล้ว

    Yeah, sounds like a new needle and seat is needed as long as the floats are in good condition. This 250 has an aftermarket exhaust.

  • @sixtyfiveford
    @sixtyfiveford  11 ปีที่แล้ว

    Most likely a carb issue but could also be as simple as a fouled spark plug. If the throttle is sticking I would definitely pull the carb apart.

  • @GarnettM

    Really good breakdown Bud , Iv`e done my friends so many times on his he has the same machine , I have his old carb in my shop .

  • @sixtyfiveford
    @sixtyfiveford  11 ปีที่แล้ว

    That'll work. You just have to be carefull to not enlarge the hole as the brass jets are soft metal.

  • @sixtyfiveford
    @sixtyfiveford  11 ปีที่แล้ว

    That's kind of what I was thinking as most come out. I gave it several decent whacks but it didn't budge so instead of damaging it I figured it was pressed in.

  • @klmartin1962
    @klmartin1962 10 ปีที่แล้ว

    I owned a shop and was the only certified Polaris mechanic in a 200 mile radius. They had real issues with these carbs because of the vibration of the 2 stroke engines. If you check carefully, almost all of these will need the needle and seat replaced. The vibration causes grooves to form inside the seat and the needle hangs up in them. Around 2005 Polaris came out with a bracket that supported these carbs better and stopped a lot of this problem. Just a heads up.

    • @sixtyfiveford
      @sixtyfiveford  10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for the heads up. Sounds like you've done your fair share.

      Yeah, owning a shop in a small town will teach you a lot. Love the vids. If I could have found some help with your knowledge, I might have kept it going. It is just hard doing everything yourself, especially after a few years when you are well established.

  • @reubenwinitch4935
    @reubenwinitch4935 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    There is a vacuum line between the carb and what looks like the oil injector. Should this be completely sealed and have a tight connection between hose and carb? If air is getting in could this cause issue at full throttle when engine is very hot

  • @zx8401ztv
    @zx8401ztv 11 ปีที่แล้ว

    Well the carb works smashing so it dont matter :-)
    When pushed from the main jet side they pop up into the throttle slide area, but that one sounds like a pig.
    Wise of you to do the right thing by not forcing it, ive snapped a few things in my time and ive allways wished i had never started.
    The sinking heart feeling, "Dam ive screwed it" lol.

    Okay thanks, I also have a 300 polaris that I have the carb apart on, it was leaking gas from the overflows. So we determined it needs a new seat and needle, does that sound right?
    How'd you get your 250 to sound like a dirtbike? My 2 stroke quads sound waaay tamer than that

    ok so i cleaned my 400s carb today, only issue when i was putting it back in was the spring and throttle cable popped out the barrel looking thing. So i got it back all together but im not sure if its right or not. I have the "c clip' of the needle on top of the brass circle thing. Does that make sense to you?

    hey i had the same exact problem my trail boss 330 it sat for 2 years and wouldn't start. I took all the gas out of the tank, rinsed it with new gas, took the fuel pump apart and rinsed it, poured new gas through the lines to rinse them. took the top of the carb off and sprayed cleaner inside and now it starts like its new. But I cant give it any gas because it will choke it up so I came here to figure out how to clean the jet

  • @WADM-qz6zl
    @WADM-qz6zl 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    ok thanks sixtyfiveford, i learned how to clean the carb because of you much thanks!! the carb coming from the front thru where the air filter is my fuel is coming out. so i tapped the carb a couple of times to move the float and it was ok for a bit. then i tried to start it again and started to leak again so i shut the fuel valve off.???

    • @sixtyfiveford
      @sixtyfiveford  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +W01191 ADM There is more than likely just some debris holding open the float needle.

    hey can you help me out? my Polaris trail boss 330 sat for 2 years and wouldn't start. I cleaned the gas tank, fuel lines, and fuel pump. took the cover off the carb and sprayed cleaner in, and now it starts up right away and idles fine. Only problem is if I give it the slightest bit of gas it will pop and stutter like it wants to shut off. Someone told me to clean the main jet do you think this is the problem?

    Can you tell me how I should run all the overfill lines? They guy I bought it from has a complete mess in there when it comes to all the lines running off of it and I have no clue where they are all supposed to go. Also your video will be very helpful when I go to rebuild my carb this weekend. Just not sure how to hook everything back to the machine.
    Thanks for your help!

      Ben Champoux I can't really remember off the top of my head. Besides the oil injection line the others just hook up and vent below the motor. They aren't critical.

  • @nombr
    @nombr 11 ปีที่แล้ว

    Do you know if its a mikuni carb I have? It just says 'mic' on it and made in japan
    Theres carb rebuild kits on ebay for about 20$ do you think one of those would work good? The stealership wants $76 just for the needle and seat

    I need help I got a 330 trailboss and I can't figure out what's wrong. It's set for a year and it won't start. It's getting a spark and I have sprayed choke cleaner in the carb and put a little gas under the spark plug and it don't even try to start. It's got good compression but I can't figure out why the gas directly in the head won't start it for a second.

    thanks 65 ford. carb dont leak anymore but now another problem it was what you said a hanging up float...however i cant get it started unless i use starter fluid ???? but when its on it idles up and down in small stages but stays on. i use the idle screw and it helps alittle. do you think i need to replace the carb? nothing looked warn and i took the whole carb apart and cleaned it as you did..?????

    • @sixtyfiveford
      @sixtyfiveford  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +John Tsarnas The compression on your engine is more than likely getting low. To make the choke system work, you can't give it any throttle. Once it fires you can give it gas. So start it without touching the thumb throttle and see if that makes a difference.

  • @eliteluck2408
    @eliteluck2408 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hey man I highly doubt you still look at this. But I cleaned my carb and didn't think to pay attention to where the throttle was seated in the carb coming from the top and I'm having issues starting it now. I'm not sure if it's because of the throttle positioning being wrong or if I messed something else up.

    • @sixtyfiveford
      @sixtyfiveford  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      The throttle slide has locating pins so it really only goes in 1 way. It shouldn't be excessively difficult to screw on the top cap. You should feel smooth movement of the throttle slide while operating the thumb throttle.
      I would pull the spark plug, open the thumb throttle all the way(choke off) and crank it over a few times. This will clear any excessive fuel. Clean/reinstall the spark plug and then give it a try to start.

    Not sure if this will get response but the air vent hole leaked on top leaked gas I don’t think I screwed that screw down and backed of 1 1/2 turns I think I did three then saw this could that be the cause

    • @sixtyfiveford
      @sixtyfiveford  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      If any of the air vents are leaking gas generally the float/needle isn't seating. This will cause the fuel level to rise too high or never stop flowing and gas to leak out.

  • @johntsarnas3664
    @johntsarnas3664 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    hey 65 im the 1987 polaris 250 trailboss same guy you were talking to a couple of days ago.. i still cant start her up.. it has good compression but i noticed the spark plug is very wet?? i cleaned it up, sprayed soem starter fluid and tried to start again and still nothing? someone told me it could be the ignition key switch?? if so how do i find out if the ignition switch is shorted out?

    • @sixtyfiveford
      @sixtyfiveford  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +John Tsarnas Too much fuel so the engine is flooded and the addition of starter fluid will just make the flooding worse. You need to de-flood the engine by pulling the plug, and use a lighter to burn off the excess fuel out of the plug, then with the choke off and the throttle held wide open(still no plug in motor) spin the engine over a few times. Then replace the plug and she should start.

  • @sixtyfiveford
    @sixtyfiveford  11 ปีที่แล้ว

    That sounds right.

  • @emiliosoto4426
    @emiliosoto4426 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    you probably wont see this but i have a 2001 polaris scrambler 400 2×4 and it idles to high and when i go full throttle it bogs out and only goes mid throttle. air filter clean. carb was recleaned a few months ago

    • @sixtyfiveford
      @sixtyfiveford  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Adjusting the idle speed is simple with the screw attached to the flexible extension on the side of the carb. If the engine bogs under load, it is generally either a fouled spark plug or worn piston rings. So put a new plug in or clean the old one(vid on my channel) and if this doesn't fix it, do a compression test.

    • @emiliosoto4426
      @emiliosoto4426 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I adjusted the idle screw. But i havent gotten the rings yet. And the spark plug is brand new. And compression is fine

    Hey I have a 91 Trail Blazer 2 stroke and it appears to be the same carb but you have an additional connection just in front (toward the engine) from the fuel line. I'm not sure why my carb doesnt seem to have any air line connections. I have idle, fuel line, and throttle cable and of course air box and engine holes. I'm baffled as to where the oil line is supposed to hook up? I'm positive I have the right carb but the manual and schematics don't label tube connections....can you clarify where the oil pump line connects?

    • @sixtyfiveford
      @sixtyfiveford  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I do so many different models, I can't recall the exact location for the oil hook up. Some hook on the carb and some hook between the carb and engine in the intake boot/manifold.

    • @tstaples9
      @tstaples9 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      thanks it sounds like it doesn't matter a whole lot then as long as it's getting the oil pulled into the manifold

    • @sixtyfiveford

      If you're ensure, you can always just premix the gas oil in the gas tank and pinch off the oil inject line.

    • @sixtyfiveford

      +W01191 ADM Yeah, they can get flooded pretty easily. Along with flooding you can foul a spark plug. To clear a flooded condition, pull the spark plug and crank the engine a few times(throttle open no choke) and then you can clean the fouled plug th-cam.com/video/dYwSObeCaUY/w-d-xo.html

      great video. Is this mikuni carb the same as what is used on the polaris 400 2 stroke engines.....it looks almost the same. I would suspect that only jet size and settings would be what the difference between the usage on one size engine and another.

      One from the side next to the choke fitting and the one at the air breather end are supposed to connect together at a tee then has a 1 way flow fitting. The 3rd is under carb bowl and is just a overflow routed downward.

    Sixtyfive. My trailblazer was in storage for a while, got it out, wouldn't start, I thought it was the carb so I clean it up (sure enough some passages were clot up), put it back together. Then I noticed my gas switch was on reserve but when turned from reserve(empty) to on ... gas started to leak from the "air vent line" located at the bottom... I pulled it apart again and even changed the "needle" (I thought perhaps is not closing well and flooding the bottom where the floaters are). Any help will be great! Thank you in advanced.

      Reading below , looks like that "air vent line " is called: "overflow drain". You mentioned it is for extreme angles, however mine is on a flat area inside the garage. Why is it overflowing? what should I do?

      Herly Sarmiento The needle isn't sealing. This can be from sticking floats or a needle that is sticking in the seat housing. It can also be from the miss adjusted needle lever or debris from the gas tank holding it open.

    • @sixtyfiveford

      It screws out out of the carb with the bolt. Then there will be a spring and plunger that goes into the carb. That will just pull straight out after the bolt is unscrewed.

      @sixtyfiveford  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Any 2 stoke or sometimes called 2 cycle oil. Don't use motor oil(like 5w30, 10w40 ect) Here's the good Polaris Synthetic stuff amzn.to/4bZK7Tm they call for. A gallon lasts for a long time. The 250 Polaris uses a ration of 40:1 or 3.2oz of oil to 1 gallon of gas and mixes it for you from this tank. Just add this to the front tank and go. If I recall you only have to fill the front tank after you've burned 4-5 gas tanks full.

      You have 2 kill switches: one on the handle bar and the key. Either will kill the motor. If you're leaking gas your float/needle seat are leaking and you need to clean the carb.

    • @sixtyfiveford

      I generally slowly work it in with gravity. So fill the reservoir and loosen a bleed screw by the wheel. Let it sit and occasionally slowly squeeze the back lever and slowly release. This should allow the fluid to start flowing. You can also loosen the brake like at the reservoir to help the fluid flow faster into the master cylinder.

    • @sixtyfiveford
      @sixtyfiveford  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      It seams you have at least 2 issues. The first is your kill switch is killing the spark. But you're removing the black wire will bypass that. So you're left with fuel delivery or compression issues. If you can't get it to restart with a "LITTLE" starting fluid after it dies you need to check the compression. A cold engine will have higher compression than a motor that is even slightly warmed up so sometimes they will start but not continue to run.

      +1982pantro You're fuel filter is more than likely clogged. It sounds like it's limiting the fuel flow, so though fuel can flow into the carb it can't keep up with the demand of the engine.

      It is an overflow drain. If the fuel level gets to high from the atv being at an extreme angle or something it drains excess fuel out this hose onto the ground. It's not really important. The other misc lines are vents for the carb bowl.

    • @sixtyfiveford
      @sixtyfiveford  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Miguel Cervantes These are fixed jet and you really can't adjust them(only very fine virtually unnoticeable adjustments). First: These are notorious from foul running due to low engine compression and running poorly due to fouled spark plugs. If it ran great and you just let it sit for a long time then the carb could be the issue. If it slowly developed this issue then it is likely compression related. If it is hard to start, the air passages I show at the mouth of the carb are dirty and or the main jet. If it sputters and bogs as you try to accelerate the main jet is dirty. If it won't idle then the idle circuit/jet is dirty. There are a lot of tiny passages that even I miss once in a while an have to take a carb back apart.

      If you've cleaned it 4 times it should be clean. Diagnosing over the phone/internet is hard and virtually impossible.
      Knocking is not good nor is piston play. It is more than likely piston slap and worn rings. I show basic piston ring replacing here: th-cam.com/video/cjKruxKR4QE/w-d-xo.html
