  • DOWNLOAD THE ORIGINAL VIDEO FILE goo.gl/3mTUfz TO SEE THE ACTUAL QUALITY, TH-cam'S COMPRESSION DESTROYS THE DETAILS
    I took my camera with me for one week and shot in all kinds of environments and with different lenses to see how RAW video performs.
    The good thing about RAW is that you get a lot more details and actual resolution compared to the native awful H.264 recording but even more important a great freedom in post-production, the 14-bit images color correct and sharpen beautifully. Also in low light shots when you use a high ISO you get a natural and pleasant grain instead of muddy compressed digital noise.
    Unfortunately, due to the limit of the SD reader on the 550D, you cannot record more than 1-2 seconds (depending on the resolution).
    Editing process:
    - Extracted DNG images with MLV Converter
    - Processed the DNG images with Lightroom and exported them in TIFF 8-bit sRGB.
    - Imported the TIFFs into Premiere Pro and exported the video file in H.264 50Mbit/s VBR (2-pass)
    HDR: it means I tried to simulate a virtual HDR shot by controlling the under and over exposed part of the image. When you (lightly) overexpose a shot with RAW you can recover almost all the information that is stored and recover the clipped highlights.
    Moiré removal: I obviously didn't remove moiré itself but the reddish artifacts it creates on patterns.
    Considering the high amount of data, Vimeo and TH-cam don't allow you to enjoy the full quality due to their compression so I suggest you download the original exported video file (2.5GB) from here: goo.gl/3mTUfz

    Ciao Sandro complimenti per il video ... anche io ho una 550d;
    Come posso impostare la macchina per ottenere un risultato simile a questo, io ho sempre problemi con lo stop della registrazione e della Preview!?
    Saluti

    Whats the maximum length you can record one video with RAW. Also when you film is the resolution on your T2i scaled down? Last time I tried raw I had a few crashes from ML if tried to bump up the resolution, they said it gets better with faster higher end SDs. Im just curious if filming in RAW would be good for weddings, Im not sure if it would fill up my cards faster.

      It really depends on the resolution, if you go below 720p you can get continuous shooting otherwise just a few seconds... I wouldn't recommend it for anything serious honestly. As far as I remember the image is not scaled down while recording in raw.

    Hi Sandro, Nice jobb... I have a canon 550d But I can't find the same nightly version that you used... and I can't find the RAW option on the other version... can you send me a link or upload it to cloud?

    • @SandroAntonucci87
      @SandroAntonucci87  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I guess it doesn't matter which version you have, the raw module is optional. It's called raw_rec.
      It can be found here www.magiclantern.fm/forum/index.php?topic=5582.0

      Thank you! I used a Transcend 16GB Class 10 card. Premiere took a lot of time compared to usual h.264 video. I can't remember exactly...

    I have a weird problem, my 550d is not decreasing it's ISO less than 200, is there any solution? And though properly exposing even at 400 ISO in broad daylight it introduces lot's of noise......is there any solution? ??

      very weird problem, never happened to me. Have you tried reinstalling the firmware or installing magic lantern?

      @ShashankGuruprasad 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@SandroAntonucci87 Yes Sir, I tried everything, while clicking photos it works fine but in movie mode it won't come less than 200 ISO. And in magic lantern when I decrease the ML's digital ISO to -2ev I get 50 ISO whereas other 550d's are getting 25 ISO.

      Hi, you can use a Class 10 card, I was later able to get more frames with a SDXC card but due to the camera limitations you can't go over 21MB/s.

      Sandro Antonucci
      Thank you thank you thank you for answering this! I have truly been searching all over Vimeo, TH-cam and the ML forums, and I could not exactly find a SOLID answer if anyone used a: class 10 with 95mb/s, UHS-1 SDXC card with a T2i... I know you said that the camera limits the write speed to 21mb/s on this type of card, but I am still glad to know that the UHS-1 SDXC cards will still work on the T2i...
      And Sandro, if I did not understand you correctly or the info I just stated is wrong, please correct me and I would appreciate the TRUE and accurate info, if my assumptions are incorrect.
      Awesome video and thank you for being kind to reply to those of us that TRULY want to learn this stuff =)
      Cheers!

      Hey Sandro! Thank you so much for answering my questions! You have no idea how much it means! I was hoping to buy a few cards that I would be able to use with an upgraded camera (just planning for the future), and you're reply helped me with my decision! May I ask at what point a card is NOT compatible with the T2i? I have read in a few places where they state the card you are using didn't work with the T2i (apparently they didn't test it). How far can I upgrade cards before my T2i says "no more"?
      Thank you so much for your help my friend! I subbed your channel!
      Keep posting videos! They are fun to watch!

    Molto interessante, si potrebbe aver un file originale da scaricare per verificare il bitrate? intendo uno dei files originali girati dalla camera, non l'export decompresso del video montato, per verificare il bitrate, perchè Il buffer della 550D è limitato a circa 20 MB/s quindi registrare con bitrates, nativi, di 50 MB/s è fisicamente impossibile, esportare con bitrate più elevati o anche decomprimere filmati per esempio da h264 aumenta le dimensioni del file ma non resitituisce dati ( profondità bit, dettagli, gamma) che la camera non ha registrato nativamente, esattamente come per esempio la compressione di un film è impossibile decomprimerlo tornando alla qualità originale o altro esempio banale per capirci una foto spremuta da RAW a JPG, perde gamma profondità di bit e risoluzione che non sono recuperabili. Grazie e complimenti per il video. PS comprimere in tiff 8bit è uno spreco di dati, attualmente io importo i DNG nativi in AE CS5 con profondità di bit originale ;)

    • @SandroAntonucci87
      @SandroAntonucci87  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Non è uno spreco di dati, perché il file finale in H.264 è 8bit 4:2:0 quindi importare in DNG in bit originali porta solo ad aumento di uso CPU per il rendering senza nessun vantaggio finale (soprattutto online dove non mi risulta youtube abbia il supporto per 10bit in enconding). L'editing l'ho effettuato su 14bit in Lightroom. Comunque non è impossibile registrare a 50MB/s, quello che è limitato a 22MB/s è il controller SD, il buffer ha una velocità maggiore ma essendo il controller limitato la registrazione si ferma dopo 40 frames circa. Per 50MB/s intendevo che il file che si ottiene (cioè DNG non compressi) è circa 2MB/s per DNG con 24 frames al secondo.

      @nicolobugatto3248 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Parlando di registrazioni di 2 2,5 sec. allora il discorso ha senso, invece lo spreco di dati c'è eccome e anche gli svantaggi finali, youtube non supporta video con tali profondità ma parlando di editing video i vantaggi in post produzione ci sono eccome, croma grading effetti vari e chroma key si avvantaggiano parecchio della profondità in bit,altrimenti a che pro girare in RAW in assoluto? o gestire progetti a 16 o 32 bit. Editare i dng a profondità nativa dà vantaggio esportando in pro res 4:2:2 o Avid DNxHD 4:2:2 ovviamente non 4:4:4 perchè i dati nativi non esistono a quella profonodità, tuto ciò primo per aver dei files editati in alta qualità su cui lavorare e eventualmente comprimere successivamente in base alla piattaforma, editare in 8 bit ed esportare in 8 bit dà in post produzione risultati notevolmente diversi dall'editare in 16 o 32 bit e POI esportare in 8 bit, ( con editare non parlo solo dello step in lightroom ossia taratura di tutti i parametri RAW ma parlo dell'editing successivo in AE e Première o final cut) secondo per sistemi che invece supportano tali formati che sono diversi. Tra l'altro io personalmente importo DNG a profondità massima in AE per i motivi succitati chroma key grading ecc. e i tempi di render sono più che ragionevoli e comunque non superiori per esempio a quando gestisco files 4:2:2 nativi generati dalla C300 o Blackmagic Cinema Camera con bitrates elevati es 50MB/s, mi risparmio il passaggio di conversione tiff e la compressione che ne deriva, ovviamente tutto ciò su workstation sicuramnte performanti ad uso professionale, e per uso delle clip in progetti di post produzione video realizzati a 16-32 bit, in AE ad esempio per gli effetti la differenza tra editare in 8 bit e 16 o 32 e abissale.

    • @SandroAntonucci87
      @SandroAntonucci87  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Nicolò Bugatto Infatti come ho detto il grading l'ho fatto in 14bit RAW :) Che era la mia unica dimostrazione del test in questo caso oltre la risoluzione.

    • @nicolobugatto3248
      @nicolobugatto3248 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Parliamo di cose diverse il grading delle clip è una cosa, fare un chorma key in After effects un'altra e se in AE importo dei dng a 12 bit 4:2:2 in un progetto a 16 bit il risultato che ottengo è molto diverso da quello che ottengo cercando di forare dei Tiff a 8 bit, tutto qua. Come già detto complimenti per clip che sono molto belle, anche la fotografia e soprattutto il grading che molte volte in certi video vira sul porpora, o verdognolo, è il problema purtroppo dei raw così ottenuti di dover 'ricreare' letteralmente i colori a sentimento, le camere native come red o BMCC rendono la ricostruzione dei colori originali molto più semplice. W ML e complimenti.

    • @SandroAntonucci87
      @SandroAntonucci87  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Nicolò Bugatto No ho capito cosa intendi e non sto dicendo che sbagli, sono d'accordo con te al 100% però per il mio scopo non serviva nulla esportare per Premiere a 14bit. Per RAW con ML quello svantaggio per me si trasforma in un mega vantaggio, cioè il controllo quasi totale, cosa impossibile con l'orribile h.264 compresso che si trova su questa camera.

      Hi, thank you. You have to copy the RAW module to your SD with ML and then enable it from the menu. Or you can install directly a nightly that has it included. Try this builds.magiclantern.fm/
