  • If you're thinking about purchasing a hex beam, VHQHEX should probably be on your list to consider. Especially if you live in high-wind, snowy or icy regions. The VHQHEX is without a doubt the most over-engineered hex beam I have ever seen. www.vhqhex.com/

I bought a VHQHEX for the upcoming T42T DXpedition. By far, it is the most rugged and well designed Hexbeam made.

I got one a year ago. It is temporarily mounted on an 8 foot roof tower, still on the ground in the back yard, with a mast putting the base up 12 feet. I had a 50 pound limb fall out of a nearby tree on the hexbeam. One side folded over like an umbrella in strong winds. The fiberglass spreaders were inches above the ground. I couldn't lift the limb off since it was tangled in the wire elements. I cut the limb in sections with a chainsaw, removed the limb pieces, and lifted the spreaders. The hexbeam sprang back up in perfect shape. NO DAMAGE. We have had numerous high wind storms and a recent ice/snow storm. NO damage and it keeps working perfectly. Even at such a low height, performance is great. I imagine it will be even better once I get it on the roof about 35 feet high. Yes, it's pricey, but definitely worth every penny. And, no, I am not affiliated with or compensated in any way by VHQHEX. Just like to share info on a great product. 73 de AA4HV

    At 6:23 minutes, is there a misprint on the bands? I see 20, 17, 21, 12, 10, 6, & 2. Should the 21 say 15?

My VHQ works great on 2 meters ! as a dipole, as it is using the 6 meter wire

Good rotor to use instead of a Ham IV but similar price(Okay $200 more... but the Spid is WAY stronger!) is the Spid Rau... Rau has 900 inch pounds of rotation force vs 800 for the Ham 4, 8,000 inch pounds(Rau) braking vs 5,000(Ham 4), 350 pounds vertical load(Rau) vs ??(Ham 4)...
I have 4 Spid rotors in use and one failure in 10 years use and that may be a broken wire(waiting for snow to melt to access tower area). They are built like a tank! I see reviews of bad pulse count and most of those are from slippage of the rotor on the mast(speaking form experience!) from not pinning it with a thru bolt(I was in a rush and it was 13 degrees f...).
Negative of the spid is weight, they are heavy! My az/el rotor weighs 55 pounds... but have 8,000 inch pounds of rotation force...

It’s super cool tech, but through the roof expensive. Also, doesn’t do HF.

Like that his stuff is all made in USA. I picked up an SP7IDX about 4 years ago when the dollar was stronger and it's been a great antenna and takes heavy wind loading. Price was about 1/2 this.

I wish they made a "Lite" version of this Hex for $800-$900- I'd buy it in a heartbeat. $1700 is just too expensive imho. We don't have hurricanes where I live, so this much metal and rigidity on the center post would be an overkill.

@@HamRadioCrashCourse I did some math on parts for building a hexbeam with fiberglass arms and stainless hardware and it will cost more then to buy a ready Hexbeam kit. The price on materials and hardware is gone significantly up it seems.

His antenna sorta looks like a folding clothesline. Does a folding clothesline actually work as a ham radio antenna, I wonder? …Hmmmm.

Quality costs...the most expensive thing is being cheap and having to order another because the cheap one broke..I KNOW ! Plus paying for a tower climber TWICE
