    I appreciate you facilitating individuals to think for themselves, about what they really need. Just like buying many consumer products. You want a fast car or off road capable, heated seats and your budget. Too many people today, dont want to put in the effort to figure out an answer. They would rather ask someone or Google it. Then go buy it and check off the box. Maybe I dont have a life but I enjoy watching and reading as many reviews as I can. Then talking to others in whatever community. Then deducing the right solution for me.

    I built a 3 phase "tactical" yagi a couple days ago. The tactical part is a vertical bipod grip, lol. Took it today on just about the highest point in Oklahoma, Panorama Vista, and hit a repeater 73 miles away in Stillwell, OK using my UV5R on 5w. I was VERY impressed. Going to try and hit the Tulsa repeater on Friday from the same Vista, which is 112 miles away.

    Josh, I love when you play two parts in your video, it is entertaining. So for me, I will still sometimes ask, "what if" but, more often then not, I pick up a book and try to understand by reading about it instead of asking. I will admit, I still get confused about some issues in ham radio, and usually you can find the answer on one of better ham radio youtubers. Thank you for sharing Josh.

  • @BryanDaniel42

    I've reminded people that with cellphones you're talking on a radio [the cellphone] through a repeater[the cell tower] that's connected [through the carrier's network] to another repeater [a cell phone tower] that's connected to the radio [cell phone] they are using

  • @Pahrump
    @Pahrump 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

    I think part of our issue these days is people will drop $1,200 either outright or over the span of a 24-month lease from the phone company and things "just work". They don't have to think about how it works or why it works and they only get the occasional inconvenience of not having a good enough signal to make a call. Big brother in the form of the phone company "just makes it work". They are used to being told what to do and not having to think about it.
    With ham radio you have to do a little bit on your own and learn a little bit on your own with the help of other people. "If this baofen is bigger than my cell phone why can't I talk across the country like my cell phone can?'

    It's better to take time to arrive at the correct answer than to rush to the wrong answer. This is one of the things I noticed immediately as a young engineer, the old and experienced guys would rarely give me a straight answer, because there are many variables in a complex problem. "It depends". In fact, the more immediate and certain someone is about their answer to a complex problem, the less I trust that they are correct.

    • @daveg5088
      @daveg5088 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      Prepping often is synonymous with "buy 'cool' tactical things that you either will never use or don't know how to use" and rarely seems to cover actually being, you know, prepared.

    • @DarkShadowCustoms
      @DarkShadowCustoms 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Pretty much any radio group has someone coming in asking these kinds of questions. It happens in more in some groups than others. When someone starts asking about Baofengs or other inexpensive Chinese radios they are also met with those who say "you need a license" without offering any advice.

  • @3henry214
    @3henry214 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

    Many married men are used to being told regularly "it depends" by their XYL's after asking "Am I going to get lucky tonight?". So, that answer to a question no longer raises an eyebrow... you kind of expect it 😆
    But seriously, a great video Josh... no nonsense straight to the point, should be required viewing for all newbies. I wish someone had a sit down talk with me like this when I first started out.

    Everyone is always like “join a club,” but it really depends on what kind of clubs you have locally. The first one I joined, I paid my money and signed up as a new member and then literally never heard anything from them to this day. Several years later I heard an event on a repeater a couple of counties away and emailed the net controller. Now I do like 10 events a year and help the new guys out. Getting paired up on an event with someone who knows what they are doing is a great way to learn. The club in my town is very focused on HF and field day which is just not my thing at all.

    The answer is - read the ARRL license manuals from cover to cover. These manuals have been compiled and refined over the years to be clear and complete and to answer rookie questions like these. Only those who are either unwilling or unable to read and comprehend this kind of technical material would still be asking these questions. It is useful to supplement your knowledge with TH-cam videos and other materials, but if you are unwilling to invest in personal study of core concepts, then you are probably in the wrong hobby.
