- It's time to reveal how much I paid for the 200 year old manor house I moved into in July '24. After looking at 15 to 20 houses, this was the one my husband and I decided to purchase.

In this video I also talk about whether it is possible to buy a cheap house in Portugal, I share some tips and talk about things to keep in mind when you consider buying a cheap house or a ruin.

Greetings from New Hampshire, USA! Excited to see the renovations and how you adapt to the Portuguese language & culture. Thanks for posting!
The language and culture will be a journey for sure! I'm starting lessons soon and am thinking about documenting some of that journey. The renovations will be on Roots & Restorations mainly.

Boa sorte! I'm sure there are others (like me) who would be interested in your Língua Portuguesa journey! 👍
Phew!! What a project!! A life times work.
Yes, a very big project! We'll take it one step at a time.
Hallo, for urban big house is not expensive. Lucky you two to have it. Lots of care, demo, love, it’s a beautiful home for you two. Thanks for sharing.
Once we've done all the renovations it will be a beautiful home (that's our hope). Thank you for watching and commenting. I appreciate the support.
Thanks for sharing and wishing you both all the best!
Thank you so much!
Love your´s videos
Thanks!
Thanks for your insights. I have done four trips, staying over three weeks each time, and my biggest concern is that I will not be able to live there full-time until 2027. I will start 50 km from Lisbon and keep going further north on each trip. Since it is going to be my first overseas investment, I am trying to be sure there will be a market to sell in the future. You never know if the place you choose will be the one forever. I started looking for inexpensive locations only to find out that the last sale was a couple of years ago. Since then, I have moved up and increased my budget to a property with the least amount of wood between the first floor and the roof. That makes everything else doable in my research. Good luck. I will keep watching your progress.
The labour costs are not that high, you can get a electrician for 50 €/day or the guys who can do everything. But ask your friends and neighbours for recommendations. Good pick.
That isn't a bad price. I've heard prices that are more like €15,00 an hour. There's quite a bit of construction happening in our village, so it's a good idea to ask around (although my Portuguese is not quite good enough for that yet).
50€/day for an eletrician? Where in Portugal? 🤔 unfortunately the prices of those services are getting really high in Portugal. 2 months ago, I needed a plumber to come urgently to my patio, and I paid 90€ for half an hour task 😟💔
@@BetheXception They have a fixed fee (usually around 60€) just to come.
50 euros per day? It’s more likely to be 50 euros per hour🤭.
Hello! Thank you so much for the video and being transparent abour the price. We are Portuguese but live in France currently, selling our house and returning to Portugal is in our plans for the near future. You are from the Netherlands, right? We used to go to the NL often a few years ago, we love the NL, always felt welcomed there. ❤
Yes, I'm originally from the Netherlands. We considered moving there, but the prices of houses there are just too high. What area of Portugal will you return to?
@GoYvon probably not where we came from, we are considering the area of Viseu but it depends on the house we find too. You guys got a great deal there!
My cousin had snails when I was a kid, he was keeping them in an aquarium in his garden. The aquarium did not have a lid, no need for it, he had put soap on the inner top side of the aquarium and because snails don't like soap, they were trapped. So, you might avoid snails and slugs by using a cheap soap bar that you rub on the contour of the wood.
Just an idea
Soap I hadn't heard of. I'm going to try three things, maybe test which one works best; soap, coffee grinds or salt.
Wow. I would say you need £100k minimum to renovate that house. I’m doing a small barn and that’s eye watering 😳
What a charming House.
Thanks! We thinks is very cute and that it has a lot of potential.
A very goog price you pay in your´s beautiful house
I think so too. 😀
Excellent videos! When you say an hour away Yvon, do you mean an hour away from the ocean as well? We would really like to live within a short drive from the coast. Obrigado!
Thank you! We haven't gone to the beaches yet, bus based on Google Maps it should take about an hour to get to some of them.
@@GoYvon Making it even more amazing you can buy a home for the price you paid. This wouldn't be possible in California!
Where did you buy your house? We are looking in the Coimbra area, but the houses there are too expensive. Good luck to you!
We bought it between Viseu and Coimbra.
Congratulations on your life decision. The next chapter in life unfolds. Are you planning to add some reasonably passive income by operating an Airbnb or similar?
Thanks! Maybe in the future, but not anytime soon.
i wonder how much will you have to spend on the renovation as it seems the work could be extensive. love from canada.
There is a lot of work to be done, for sure which will cost us some money. We're willing to invest a bit as we're planning to live her for the rest of our lives. Once we're a bit further in the reno and have spend some more money I might make a video on how much we've spend so far.
I think the price is fair.
Same.
are going to make stable with horses?
That would be awesome! I used to ride horses when I was young. I'm not planning on having horses in the near future, but who knows, maybe later. I'm going to start with chickens.
You do see the black mold on the walls right?
At what time exactly?
It’s very very common here in Portugal

well the question is how long you want to live there. If you calculate 75,000 and your other costs, you can rent a very nice house for a very long time without having to work. everyone has to decide for themselves what they do. I once thought like you and bought a house. Since the heating and renovation laws have changed for 2030, my house has fallen from €550,000 to zero. With that money I could have lived in a villa for decades, it would have been nicer and meant less hassle and not the constant repairs that you have to do if, like me, you have a house that was built in the 1960s.
That's tough, that the value of your house is gone. Renting has benefits, but also some downsides, mostly that you're not investing in yourself but giving money to others. We're planning on living here the rest of our lives, if possible.

thanks for you reply.
Now in the meantime it's so easy to get information. which I didn't have back then. Finally, there is the theory that because of the persistently high house prices and repairs that have to be made over time, you can make a good income with an investment and can therefore rent a much better house. Based on my previous experiences that I have described above, I can only agree with this. With the loss in value I would have been able to enjoy one of the best villas in my area in a completely different luxury for the loss in value of the house and the constant repairs for houses that are getting old.
