I want to remind you I live across the straits en Calabria I would love to go visit the beans in the new house I will take care of Noah while you guys work!;!
The main issue is the stairs and occupying Noah to get the furniture in. Ideally if items can be stored with a deposit at 2nd hand stores, then collected all on one day later on with a large hired van and one or two helpers, that's likely the best plan. I understand using Ikea to get essentials in and actually be able to spend every night there, but to truly furnish it with character, gotta get those antiques 😀
I haven't seen you guys THIS HAPPY and content for a long time.... Alex actually has a sparkle in his eyes and I can hear the peace and joy in Emma's voice... GRATITUDE is happiness..
There are a million reasons to get frustrated with moving to Sicily but I wouldn't want to live anywhere else. Sicily has been very good to us as transplants. Your love of Sicily will only grow. You have fans on island. Glad you all are here.
Here's a suggestion for all those stairs : Buy a few truck loading ramps and put them over the stairs. Get wooden boxes or sturdy boxes to put small items in. Use a wheeled roller (here we call it a dolly) and bungy chord or straps to secure heavy items onto the dolly. Pull furniture and items up the stairs over the ramps. There are handcart dollies specifically designed to move up the stairs. For smaller items a smaller grocery cart with wheels could be used to haul things up those stairs without ramps.
After hearing how tired you were and puffing a bit, then watching you walk up the stairs knowing you had to walk back down again, get the camera and then walk back up; I couldn't help but think, "you, poor dear." On the other hand it's is a help on your journey to a healthy body.
As a retired, clinical child psychologist I wish to congratulate you with your very warm and relaxed attitude that you demonstrate in your parenting. It is clear you genuinely love your son and wish to give him the best upbringing you can. I won’t say it can’t be challenging because it can be. However, you’re starting out with the right attitude. There is one book I would recommend how to raise an emotionally intelligent child.By John gottman. It has some great ideas in it and focuses on coping with children’s emotions.
We visited Sicily a few years ago and loved it. One of our favourite places was Ragusa which we were lucky enough to visit during the festival of St Georgio - check it out. We found a table outside a cafe at the foot of the cathedral steps and had a ringside view whilst drinking cocktails and being plied with delicious free snacks. As you said the people were super friendly.
I congratulate you on buying a piece of Sicily that is all your very own. 23 years ago I bought a place in Tuscany and enjoyed it part time for quite a long period. I enjoyed meeting the local people. They are the salt of the Earth. They are warmth and kindness is incredible. I wish you a life of health and joy and pleasure.
I live in Australia and have a Sicilian sister by another mother! I've been adopted into their family and have experienced the most amazing sense of family. Embrace it and enjoy the journey - your lives will be so much richer.
Patience is not only a virtue, it's a necessity! You now have somewhere to sleep. Good start. Does your shower work? Do you have a working sink? Your next visit is to a grocery store or Brico to stock up on supplies. Cleaning supplies, kitchen basics, bathroom supplies, and whatever gets you through an average day without you breaking into tears. Soaps, toilet tissue, cleaning products, dish cloths, towels, dishes, flatware, pots and pans, a dish tub for washing dishes, toilet brush, a mirror for the bathroom, mouse traps, Kitchen storage containers for dried foods you can leave when you go traveling (pasta, flour, sugar, dried beans, corn meal etc) and a short cupboard you can store all that in. One for the kitchen and one for the bathroom.
We lived in a small village just outside Catania with our two young children in the 1990s and sent our daughters to nursery then school in Catania. What made it really special was having young children, because the Sicilians really love them - you'll have a great time. Sensible things to get would be a table and chairs, but a coffee machine and a bar would be more fun.
As someone who’s lived in whilst simultaneously renovating a house. I’d suggest a wardrobe, chest of drawers or something cheap/second hand.. a dedicated clean space to put your clothes. Living out of a suitcase can be a real challenge. When you come to working in that bedroom, it’s much easier to cover the bed and wardrobe with a drop cloth or something and not have it to schlep it out or covered in dirt after a long day’s work. Similar to where you store your dishes and food. If you keep in theme with camping, there’s some great pieces to use for both… also, it won’t go to waste when you finally find pieces you’ll actually furnish the house with. Unless of course you find the perfect pieces. 😅
Living in a van, must make this place seem like a palace. Ownership is never over rated, so happy for you guys. How life can change in a few short years.❤❤❤
No you are not the only one who loves putting furniture together - I love doing puzzles and putting furniture together and knowing I did it myself step by step is very enjoyable
Good job despite the small miscalculation with the luggage. 😅My advice, as a mother of two, is to also get a mattress topper the next time you are at IKEA. With small children, there can be accidents with pee, poo and vomits in the bed. A replaceable mattress cover extends the lifetime of the bed considerably. Other than that, I think a mixture of old and new in the interior is nice. Blending new stuff with old furniture, glass, bowls and plates from second hand gives a nice touch to the interior. I'm excited to see the rest of it.
or just purchase a mattress cover and you'll never have a problem with anything getting on the mattress and won't have to worry about a urine or vomit soaked piece of foam.
Helenahagstedt8953 just a tiny suggestion - and this is my pet peeve - please use the word HOMEY instead of homely. HOMEY means warm, comfortable, contended living, while HOMELY means unattractive or ugly.
@Cat-ti1kc: I think this may be a “tomaytoe - tomAto” moment between British English and American English; as in British English, the word "homely" has a favourable connotation and means simple, unpretentious, cozy and homelike. I do appreciate that in American English that term has a somewhat different meaning, but this channel is about a British Couple and their son. The British spelling of that word is “homie”, and here this is a slang term for someone who originates from the same area (or home town) as a person. We each have different spellings, pronunciations and meanings of words as our “common” language evolved separately and diverged for different reasons; neither is correct, just an effective “regional dialect”, so please understand and embrace the differences from the perspective of others. Just look up the British equivalent of a pencil eraser or fanny pack and “vive la difference” as our French cousins might say.
Do you regret not keeping the previous owner’s furniture? It could have at least been something temporary to make the house somewhat furnished from the beginning! I was surprised you passed on the option!
@@everleen56There seem to be an abundance of 2nd hand shops to sell it to. It wasn’t my taste either except for a couple of pieces. I'd be interested to learn how much extra was the house with the furniture.

Sweet Emma .. that gratitude 🙏 that burst out of your eyeballs is one of the best feelings ever!! 😂😊❤❤❤.. Noah is a little man now!! Beautiful Boy😊WOW!!! Lolll
Pretty much our experience in France. We hired a little van and it took us an hour to pack the thing outside IKEA, everyone was staring and shaking their heads 😅. But we did it. We ended up getting to bed at 3.30am after building ours. We also bought a rug. We have a camping fridge, kettle, toaster and new this year a mini oven. We also bought curtains and a few lights. The rest of our cottage is equally rustic .
Also, the car rental businesses will rent you the portapacchi for the top of the car . That way you can move quite a bit of Ikea items. We have a place in the hills with steps similar to you. It's the Italian Stair master!

Thank you for sharing with us all...the plaster repair you need in your bedroom in general is very simple to do. Never underestimate your abilities ..especially when it's such a simple task that might inspire you to tackle even larger repairs. Good luck!
This is not an overrated video about Sicily at all. I have been across the island and I completely agree about the feeling, the people, the food, the history…all of it. It had never been on my bucket list of places to visit but after I did, I left a part of my heart there. I’ve always loved visiting mainland Italy but Sicily was an unexpected delight. I’m looking forward to returning very soon… PS: Found your channel by accident today and subscribed straight away. Looking forward to hearing more about your discoveries of this wonderful place. Congratulations on your new home from cold and snowy Canada 🇨🇦
Thanks for the vicarious offerings of obtaining and refurbishing your dream house in Italy! (Don't sweat the stairs, just hire the big stuff out and avoid the thrill of ambulance rides...) blessings and congrats-beautiful location.
First of all, I love you guys and you never fail to bring a smile to my face with your adventures. You were also the favorite TH-camrs of my late wife who passed away last February after 42 years of marriage. We looked forward to and loved watching your videos together. I'm American and been slow traveling since her passing...spending a month or so at a time in a single location. Currently in Albania till early January and Sicily is definitely on the short list for the next location after here.
You do know that sack trucks are available that are designed to ascend and descend stairs and steps. They have three wheels on each side arranged around a central hub that rotates as one goes up and down the steps. A must for you there or access to a Donkey. Available on that online shop beginning with Am if can't be found locally.
Watching you in that moment of gratitude was so special. Right before that I was just thinking how calm and relaxed you both seemed in this video. Happiness will do that. ❤
I think I would find a dining table that you could use to eat at and use for food prep. Maybe some extra dining chairs so you can invite Sara, Luca and Lucce to join you. It would also give you a place to work from.Definitely check out the second hand stores. Maybe buy a plug in induction hob for cooking - think IKEA sell them. Oh and maybe a fridge and see if you can get it delivered.
The lil place you rented at beginning of the video! ❤ that gave me 100 ideas of how I can now decorate my rental in the mountains too! I prefer that so much more over the modern. You guys are living a dream. Flea markets are always the best place to go first. ❤
Congratulations! What a wonderful life milestone to celebrate. It reminds me of my early moves. I would definitely get a wardrobe and chest of drawers next. Makes the beginning of each day much easier and more pleasurable. Also some lighting next to the bed will give you a nice ambience as the days get shorter. I suspect you will need a portable heater too if you plan to be there over winter. And of course, a washing machine (or washer dryer in one to save space) I assume there is no laundromat in the small village.
Look at the beans all grown up! Enjoy your new home and looking forward to your adventures of dressing the house with what ever you have chosen. Have a great day.
I’m begging you, fix the plaster. You are going to be cleaning up and breathing plaster dust every single day and Noah is going to be getting into it. At the very minimum, knock down all the loose plaster on one fell swoop and see what you have left that needs repair. It’s not a rustic feature, it’s a health hazard.
In second-hand markets, by paying a small amount for transport, they will bring the goods to your home. especially the furniture, so you don't have to get tired and with a small child it's very comfortable 🙂
I like what you said about Food and Family...because that is a perfect name for the phase of life you are entering...the focus will be food and family. Fun and Adventure will still be a priority, only no longer the focus. (until empty nesting time, then fun and adventure will return as the focus). I think your first home is charming and a perfect place to start your next chapter. Has baby fever got ya yet because before you know it baby number two will be joining the journey. Congratulations and Many Blessings!
Congratulations on getting moved in!! That view...amazing!! I cannot wait to see what you all do with the place. I don't envy you climbing up and down those stairs with furniture, etc....perhaps creating some kind of temporary pully system. Anyway, the house is going to be great! 😊
Yeah 🎉next long curtains big rug, small rugs, wall sconces, dresser drawers with small lamps, small couch for cuddles. Perfect and warm for the family ❤❤❤ Start taking pictures of the homes inside you like and copy it with your own twist ❤
small kind of silly note. use that chest strap clip with your baby carrier! that's what takes the load off of your back and shoulders, and helps stabilize the weight. and for anyone else buying a similar type mattress, you'll find you're supposed to let it air out without any sheets or people on it for at least 8-12 hours so it can fully expand. I thought you both were crazy for having the furnishings moved out when you bought the place, but I'm excited for you to make it your own!
Sicily has been my top next destination for the past few years, will definitely visit when we are able to travel back to Europe! Looking forward to you continuing to explore.
Daytime Catania is a pretty nice city, but at nighttime it feels downright magical. I remember being awestruck and giddy walking around it after dark when wife and I visited Sicily in June of this year. So I can totally relate to Alex feeling emotional there.
We definitely wouldn't mind having some exposed stone in the house - unfortunately in this case it does need to be fixed by professionals. But perhaps we could have some other areas more exposed like that.. thanks for the comment and for watching!
@TravelBeans To begin, those type mattresses are not to be sat upon for many hours until they set up in expansion. Grab a few comfortable chairs, table, 2 propane stoves to cook meals. Enjoy ! Happy for you !
Just be super careful when they're refinishing the walls, because there's a lot of toxins in paint that get released when they sand / smooth things over etc. Also there's good low VOC emitting paints that you can use to protect your family and your little one especially!
My friends live in a hill town - 450 steps up to the road where they keep the car and nearly 1,000 steps down to the town (and back up again if they don't have the scooter.) Your steps will get you into great shape!
Your excitement is just what I need today! I’m in the US (Portland) and looking to buy an apartment in Italy. I don’t speak Italian yet however, I hear there are a lot of expats in Italy. I am so excited to watch your journey. Thank you so much! 😊
Wow. I love this. Seeing Emma overcome with emotions made me cry too. I really wish you all the best of luck in your new home. I can’t wait to see how you make the house your own by adding all the personal touches
I would get a kitchen table and 2 decent, comfy chairs plus a high chair. You can do everything at a kitchen table. Ikea do a inducrion hob with 2 rings that would make a huge difference (and safe with a toddler).
Old stuff from the markets would be nice in there, but i would plaster the wall just to prevent moult forming under that whats open now. U can do it yourself a bag of plaster some water and go. :-}
I love this for you. What an experience and super important to explore your surrounds. Could not help but notice the book you were reading with Noah. Another inspirational family travelling the world like you. Flying the Nest .
I agree with Emma, assembling Ikea furniture is extremely satisfying! It will be fun watching the two of you turn the house into a home. Congratulations!
While I sit here, alone with my cat, and living w/my mother...ya'll are living a dream life...this comment is a bittersweet one...I hope one day to make my life at least halfway to where you guys are, at least living on my own again would be nice, traveling and doing van life I hope will change my situation (yes, I bought one!)...thanks for being an inspiration....so cute that Noah is talking and walking now!
Pillows, at least 2 sheet sets, duvet cover. a contactor to fix the wall. It will be easier to fix the wall without all the stuff you will fill the room with.
I love seeing the sweet happiness you have for your move and the realistic attitude you have about it not being all roses and candy to get to a place that you want to be in. AND GIRL your hair is looking AMAZING!!!! Continue having fun and laughing at all the real life goof-ups! we all do it. :)
Wow ~ growing up in Australia since the 70s through to this day where Italians and Sicilians are called every version of extreme racism and my Sicilian father is called a wog, dago, foreigner and trespasser ... thank you for your beautiful words about who Sicilians truly are. Thank you, grazie mille.
Wow, i remember a few words thrown around back in the 70s but my husband is sicillian and we have have not heard any racial comments towards italians or sicillians for over 30 years. Racial comments were directed at all the races pre 1990s. No race was excluded

Some boho cushions, poster prints of photos from your favourite places, some soft rugs, eclectic bits and pieces over time... the Ikea basics will blend right in & serve their purpose 😊
Edit: I'm with you Emma... I love building flat pack (PS I'm not a serial killer 😂).
Aw thank you! We are so happy and excited to be able to share this process with you! Thanks so much for joining along 🙏
@@TravelBeans They are not your friends....you're on your own.
I love building things too. Anytime we have a piece of anything to put together it’s me, not my husband that does it
Enjoy each moment with Noah. ❤❤He is just precious! Life is a journey not a destination and you are now a beautiful family of 3 travel beans! 🫶🏻🫶🏻😁🤗😍Congratulations on your new perfect home in Sicily. 🎉🌟🌟
Italy is blessed by your presence, guys.
Thanks for keeping us company.
Awesome ❤❤❤the view is spectacular!! Congratulations on your first home!! It's so exciting to be able to see a slice of your lives. Thank you for sharing with us all...the plaster repair you need in your bedroom in general is very simple to do. Never underestimate your abilities ..especially when it's such a simple task that might inspire you to tackle even larger repairs. Good luck!
Congratulations on your new home! Congratulazioni per la tua nuova casa!!!
@19:20 really, it DOESN'T get ANY better than THAT!!! Small achievement, grand rewards!!!
You're not alone, I also love putting furniture together. It's a giant puzzle! Very satisfying :)
That amphitheater is gorgeous! What a a beautiful example of the old and new together. Purchase Next: night stands and throw rugs.
Thanks for the vicarious offerings of obtaining and refurbishing your dream house in Italy! (Don't sweat the stairs, just hire the big stuff out and avoid the thrill of ambulance rides...) blessings and congrats-beautiful location.
All I can do is sending Special Blessings to your Beautiful little family, great content 🙏 ❤️
You are so kind, thank you!
My grandma who raised me was from Catania!! I cannot wait to visit it now. Thanks, Beans!
So very sorry for the loss of your wife.
@@the_mum Thank you.
Loving the sense of adventure and discovery
Thanks for taking us along with you 3
Thank you! 🙏🥰
The plaster can be sealed 🤷🏼♀️
Hi Beans. Thanks for this episode xx
Thanks so much for being here and watching! 🙏
8:01 so wonderful to see you sooo happy. You’re a beautiful family!
You guys really are living the dream. You've found a wonderful little home with a view just a short flight away from family and friends in the UK.
Happy for you guys,
I enjoy your videos!
Such an adorable family. Congratulations on officially moving in. Can’t wait to see how the new digs turn out.
I have to say you both look great! Whatever you are doing for your health... keep it up... it really shows! ❤
I noticed that too. Walking a lot plus steps and caring for a toddler does get you in shape.
Perfect and warm for the family ❤❤❤
Start taking pictures of the homes inside you like and copy it with your own twist ❤
small kind of silly note. use that chest strap clip with your baby carrier! that's what takes the load off of your back and shoulders, and helps stabilize the weight. and for anyone else buying a similar type mattress, you'll find you're supposed to let it air out without any sheets or people on it for at least 8-12 hours so it can fully expand. I thought you both were crazy for having the furnishings moved out when you bought the place, but I'm excited for you to make it your own!
Sicily has been my top next destination for the past few years, will definitely visit when we are able to travel back to Europe! Looking forward to you continuing to explore.
I love kit builds too.
Really appreciate this down to earth honest video on life in Sicily well done !!
Daytime Catania is a pretty nice city, but at nighttime it feels downright magical. I remember being awestruck and giddy walking around it after dark when wife and I visited Sicily in June of this year. So I can totally relate to Alex feeling emotional there.
Not gonna lie, I thought the cool imperfections on the wall was part of the design to remind folks that it’s an old rustic house. Keep it as is!
We definitely wouldn't mind having some exposed stone in the house - unfortunately in this case it does need to be fixed by professionals. But perhaps we could have some other areas more exposed like that.. thanks for the comment and for watching!
Plus... Ikea in an old world home.... I'd have to see it...
Keep it. 🎉🎉🎉
tears of joy for you both too …
to experience the emotional embrace of this land and people really does warm the heart and soul ✨💚✨
They are already starting to transform!
Now you get to keep the best of both worlds, Britain and Italy. 😉👍💖
8:10 ❤❤❤ so much of why I watch this channel, Emma's joy and gratitude of life!!❤❤❤
Wow. I love this. Seeing Emma overcome with emotions made me cry too. I really wish you all the best of luck in your new home. I can’t wait to see how you make the house your own by adding all the personal touches
I’m loving watching you guys making your house into a home. Enjoy every moment. ❤
You could fix those walls with a few tools, some ready made plaster, sandpaper, primer and paint. Or find a local handyman who will do it for cheap.
I would get a kitchen table and 2 decent, comfy chairs plus a high chair. You can do everything at a kitchen table. Ikea do a inducrion hob with 2 rings that would make a huge difference (and safe with a toddler).
Old stuff from the markets would be nice in there, but i would plaster the wall just to prevent moult forming under that whats open now. U can do it yourself a bag of plaster some water and go. :-}
I love this for you.

@@wordjam412 Stop the sensationalism... as the person said ALL races, ethnicities go through the same in a foreign country. This is no place to drudge up this nonsense or those slurs.. Italians are TIRED of hearing that nonsense since the vast majority were revered and never went through what you've described.
