- Today, I take the Hoka One One Challenger ATR 5 Gore Tex for a cold and wet winter road around my sister's house in Connecticut. The Challenger ATR 5 is a crossover shoe, intended to be competent for road and trail, and with the Gore Tex treatment, it makes it a very capable winter running shoe.

Seth shirt in the house.
Ha ha.... love it!!!
SJD!
It's like they made a shoe colorway just for you and then threw in that pull tab for Jami!
Gotta like the Hoka love! Nice shirt btw 😊
Thanks!
Nice review dude! Nice to see a fellow New England runner on TH-cam. Keep doing your thing!
I’m only visiting New England. But I do enjoy running there.
Hope you can get your hands on a pair of Hoka Torrents, lower profile trail shoe but still has plenty of cushioning in typical Hoka fashion while sporting good looks!
maybe
Best all round trail shoe out there
I love my pair of torrents so much, best trainers I’ve ever bought
@@0141D I have just bought a second pair in a sale in case they muck up the Torrent 2
Brilliant review mate, I’m on the hunt for a trail/crossover shoe for this years trail race so might look at the hoka lineup....
the shoe is great in New England weather. i think it will do quite well in regular England weather as well.
I wonder if it would be better than the Pegasus Trail Gore Tex version?
The FOD Runner I have the atr and love it! Absolutely worth a look Andy
Ive got the non gtx and its amazing in technical/wet trails and a road running...just ran yesterday for 21kms in a road and trails 🤘
i'm looking forward to getting some more mud and dirt on these
I bought a pair of Challenger ATR’s last Sept and found that they are better suited to road or hard pack running and the reason I believe is that the lug pattern does not suit our pea gravel we have here in Western Australia, but then only aggressive lugs grip and don’t slip or roll under your foot. This is not a fault with the Hoka’s as our pea gravel is unique here, love your honest reviews 👍😁
I’ve never seen pea gravel. Sounds like a workout
Gotta love the snotty Connecticut weather. I'm a little further up the coast in CT. C'mon spring!
Hello from Miami. Happy 2020🌞🙌🏾
could have been worse
Absolutely true. :-) It's been mild, so far, much like Chicago.
Excellent review, great video you covered everything I needed to know about these's shoes, I should get mine in a couple days. Your video covered about the same terrain and weather that I will be using these shoes for, thank you for sharing this video with us, and take care out there!
Ran a trail half yesterday in the regular version (but a women's wide which is perfect for my slightly wider feet). Loved it! Very sturdy on trails - moderately technical and the Challenger handled it well. (and love the Ginger Runner buff and SJD shirt!)
Great to hear!
Love goretex for running in mud in winter
1 minute under the hose and like new again
I have this exact shoe and it's great for muddy trails, great traction!
Waterproof and okay for snow that's an inch or two deep.
Very comfortable and cushy though I like the non goretex version in warmer, drier conditions.
Well done... I have some older Challengers and really like them.... these ones could be a great follow-on............
I think these shoes will really be able to take a beating. They’ll be fun
One of my favorite shoes! Fairly wide toebox, comfortable fit. Good for everything but heavy mud.
i have a trip coming up where i'll be bringing these, and because it's the desert, I was thinking I'd have no chance for heavy mud. but somehow, the forecast calls for rains. so we'll see
I also run against traffic. I always forget what is the "correct" way, but a scary number of people are on their phone while driving and it gives me a little added comfort if I can see them coming. I've also been looking for a shoe to help me with very icy 4am runs here in New York. I may never find that magic slipper. The ice has been brutal so far this winter. Also, great shirt! I need to pick one up.
Do you ever run in those ice spikes?
@@kofuzi do you mean those ones that strap to the bottom of your shoes? I have not, but that's not a terrible idea to try out. It's been pretty mild this part week, but we've been in that weather where it gets barely warm enough for anything to melt or get freezing rain, then single digits and teens for days and it just never comes off of running routes.
Great content as always!! It’ll be great to hear your comparison between the Challenger GTX ATR vs Pegasus Trail GTX!!
That would be great. I just bought the Pegasus trail gtx and I am curious to get a second opinion about them
Appropriate timing! I was on the Chi. Lakefront after the snowfall and thoughts of trail shoes crossed my mind.
i missed the snow while we were away for the holiday
Nice shirt! Love your support for an other great TH-cam channel! Little disappointed by the Hoka's because I was hoping they would do better on the roads... But great review as always!
I love my challenger ATR, although I don’t have the gore tex edition
Awesome!
Great Demoor shirt...lol. I'm glad you 2 are friends....such different styles of vlogging but yet, similar.
Just came over from watching SJD and got a bit confused when I saw the t-shirt 😅
I ran my last 100k in the challenger atr 5's. They performed really well. The course was dry and technical. It was in the desert mountains. If the course was wet then I can see the shoes having some issues.
because the upper would get wet? or because it's not rugged enough?
@@kofuzi The lugs won't give me enough traction in the soft stuff. That's where the mafate's would come in play for me. I actually thought the ATR 5's drained fairly well though. Most of what I run in is a dry climate with trails and road access. So for that, the ATR's are perfect.
What I would give to go run in the rain. So horrible, dry, hot and smoky in Canberra right now!
What gear did you wear to stay dry?
Love the SJD shirt!
2:30 are they also narrow like typical Hoka?
Lovin the SJD shirt and Ginger runner buff. 😁
Hi Kofuzi I know it’s a kid video and I’m thinking to get version 6 but the one shoe is a bit tight as I’m use to Altra but they don’t have a water resistant hybrid shoe. So my question is would the gore tex stretch as I walk/run the shoes in. Thx much appreciated your videos and reply
Happy New Year.Love the shirt and shoes.
I wonder if these shoes can be used for hiking.
At the end of the vid, you mentioned that it’s not a very comfortable shoes to wear through the airport or casually. Are you able to elaborate further? I’m travelling japan in march and was hoping to bring one pair of shoes where I can do variety of runs (road and trails) and do a lot of walking in. These seems like the perfect shoes at first until I heard your comment :-D Thanks in advance!
I wouldn’t want to do a lot of walking in these shoes. Hiking? Yes. Walking on pavement or through an airport, no.
Great review.. I'm looking for a weather shoe for fall/winter relaxed, short runs no more than 5K loop in Prospect Park BKLYN (mostly paved) ... I am a Hoka Bondi girl by preference, and my (older, ahem) feet crave the max cushioning... Do you think I could put a cushy insole into a slightly larger-sized Challenger ATR 5 GTX to get the best of both worlds? (I am usually a 6 - 61/2, and just purchased size 7 in this, DEEPLY $$ Discounted, so couldn't refuse ... I DESPERATELY need a rain/goop - resistant shoe, and lean Hoka.... Thanks
I feel I’ve seen you recommend the Flipbelt a couple times and you often run with a headlamp, have you ever tried Flipbelt’s light? I picked one up off Amazon with holiday gift cards. It fits in one of the openings on the belt and gives you up to 500 lumens. You get better depth perception versus headlamps. It is a good value compared to the Ultraspire light belts like the one Ginger Runner put on his gear of the year list. Especially if you already own a Flipbelt. It would be great for the night section of your Ragnar this year.
Maybe it’s because I don’t run trails, but I haven’t found myself being too picky about lights.
I’ve been seeing ads for the flip belt light. But I do like the idea of shifting weight more towards the waist rather than putting it on my head
Damn, these shoes look really awesome. Are they vegan?
i am not aware
They would've told you if they are
ngentotsemua 🤣
Nah
Big Hoka fan but have never got on with myATR 5s (not GTX) , have had ATR 2, Clifton 3s, Clifton 5s (also not a fan), Vanquish 2 (BEST), Elevon, Speedgoats and Evo Mafate
The atr is supposed to be softer than the soeedgoat
Great vid. I have the regular Challenger ATR 5s. Ran 17.2 miles in them this morning; mostly dirt/crushed limestone trails with water, snow, ice, & mud. No slipping and they felt great the whole time. Tried them on some technical stuff last week; won't be trying that again.
BTW - that song at the beginning is awesome. What is it called and who is it by?
thanks for the review, im gonna buy one
Did you just run past The Athlete Special’s House? Great kicks....I want me some. Nice work on the SJD T-shirt too. HNY Ko! 🍾
Happy new year!
What are the best options for a waterproof road only shoe? The only thing I've seen that looks good is the Pegasus 36 Shield
Are you just concerned about water? Or water and cold?
@@kofuzi just water really. It's not that cold in the UK 😊
It's pretty low profile shoes, the yellow reflective trip is hightlight, I have a question about size, I wear ASICS MEN SIZE US 8.5,what size should I pick for hoka one one ATR 5 GTX?
8.5, assuming you're talking about Asics running shoes.
great review. thank you!
How they fit?
What an intro kofuzi! :-)
I have a pair of ATR 5 hoka one one and I use them in light trails. They are too soft on roads, at least for me. Goretex is great but what about using waterproof trail gaiters to avoid any water from the heel cup/collar? ;-)
I’ve never tried gaiters.
Breathability? Is the Goretex breathable? Could I wear it in muddy hot conditions for instance?
if it's cold, go with goretex or something that keeps the elements out. if it's hot, go with something that breathes or drains.
Happy New Year! Thanks for the review -- wonder how they'll do on snow covered streets?
stay tuned.
Is it good for the snow ?
I like the look of the shoes.
Me too
I'm in chicago and a few people in my running group like trail running. I will have to go try them on and see how I like them.
At this point my regular Challenger ATR 5:s have gone more than 400 km. The durability is very good; the outsole does look a bit worn but it functions just as well as day 1. I wouldn't recommend it for snowy or icy terrain though; the lugs are not aggressive enough for such usage. They're not all that good for mud either but they're perfect for any size of path. They also don't do so well on big wet rocks and wet logs.
I think it's best used for low to medium intensity running since I get a sensation of my forefoot sinking into the midsole when I go faster and need responsiveness.
In conclusion I think they're great for distance training on trail and mixed surfaces but as an orienteer I can surely say that they're clearly not made for the woods.
Im hoping that it will be good enough for the types of snowy conditions that I anticipate as a road runner
@@kofuzi I think you'll be fine on roads. After all I try to avoid running on asphalt so my view on this product differs from yours.
Not good for snow?
@@SamLGND nah it's a pretty wack shoe all in all
Looks great! Does this shoe still have a rock plate for on the trails?
i do not believe so
Hello i have a metatarsal issue and pain below the balls of my feet. My doctor advised me to wear Hokas and the late stage meta rocker is ideal so there is no flexibility on the toe off. I currently wear the tor summit boot and they work great. Hokas dont make golf shoes although i wish they did, and not too high on the sole. I tried the Gavoita but infelt it wasnt cushioned enough and felt uncomfortable after long walks as that was more of a support shoe. Can anyone please help with this shoe if this would work for me i would be grateful. Thank you
Loved the SJD shirt!
It’s very soft
Question on your vid yesterday, would you buy the beacon V2 or peg 36s of they are at the same price?
Both great options. Totally down to personal preference, imo
@@kofuzi thanks!
Thanks a lot. now i can't get that intro song out of my head !
Re more trail than road, once you make a shoe that is in any way adapted to the trails then it is necessarily, to that extent, less suitable for the road. Conversely, a road shoe will generally be usable on some trails but still has all the limitations of not being adapted to that environment. So basically you're never going to have a shoe equally suited to both. However marketed, once you give a road shoe trail features it is now a trail shoe, although perhaps still runnable on road.
I think that may be an oversimplification
Nice review and cool shirt!
rockin that GR wrap ❤️
Ya seen the Pegasus 36 goretex ?
I have seen it
Would ya consider it for a wet weather runner?
Thanks for the video
Nice beat.
Curti a música em português 😄🇧🇷
Love the shirt! 👍
Здравствуйте а в начале что за музыка играла
nice shirt !
I am sure I am watching Kofuzi’s video but for a second I saw your t shirt I thought I click on Seth’s video😂
Soon as I saw the stonewall I knew you were in New England...
this place is full of them
@@kofuzi I'm just outside of Boston and you find them all over. Very distinctive feature of the region that not many outside of the area are aware of. Some have been dated back to the 1600's.
I don't like the yellow pull loop !
Nice t-shirt 🤙🤙
Nice shirt, mate.
Thanks 🍌
Nice shirt!
Nice
Dope shirt
came in the mail while i was in CT
Sexy shoe!!! Hope it’s not too sticky on the road!
I love the design.
it's not too sticky. just stiff
Wait.. Whatt?!?
You look kinda „green“ 🤓
