I think people don't understand what a stylus meant in 2007. Some smartphones required a stylus to use the touchscreen. Touch input from a human finger was far less reliable on those early touch screens.
The Apple Pencil is a tool for creating a hand writing like experience on a digital device, NOT for operation of that device.

David Jensen yes! I couldn't agree more, as Steve Jobs' saying "who wants a stylus?" refers to the stylus-required devices

I agree. I remember the O2 phone with the stylus back in the day, pretty impressive device until the first iPhone came out. 10 years has passed, and so many thing have changed. Why can't we just enjoy and appreciate how technology has improved over years, and that we are the beneficiary of these engineers' intelligence.

My first smartphone was one of those, and when I lost the stylus I had to use the edge of my fingernail to operate the phone

People take the Steve Jobs quote completely out of context. He was talking about the *primary* input method; the *required* one. "Who wants a stylus [to be the main input method needed to use the iPhone]?" Obviously, there's nothing wrong with people who want it for some things, but if it's *needed* for the iPhone to function, then it's an annoyance because "you gotta take it out every time you want to use the iPhone, you lose 'em... yukh."
Not everyone *needs* the Apple Pencil on the iPad, just like not everyone *needs* a Wacom pen tablet on a PC. His point was that they chose the required input method to be one that everyone already has, that can't be lost, and that you don't need to take out -- fingers (and for those who want a stylus, be his guest).

  • @chengong388

A stylus is technically just a solid plastic stick you use to press resistive touch screens, like the 3DS and old Windows Mobile devices.
The Apple Pencil is a digitizer pen like the ones made by Wacom for artists. These devices are characterized by built in sensors and circuits that actively communicate with the surface it is being used on.
And also these devices have always been around $100 even before the Apple Pencil came out.

With Tailosive's (Andrew's) suggestion to me I waited for the new (2017) 12.9 inch iPad Pro. Of course I got the Apple Pencil with it since I am a college student and I don't want to lug around a MacBook until I get into classes that don't already have me carrying a crap load of books too. In just the summer classes alone the iPad/Apple Pencil combo has been indispensable. Taking algebra and calculus notes is so much easier when you can actually write out mathematical formulas and draw illustrations. I also do digital art on the side and have a digital art class this fall that will make the these devices even more handy to have around. I don't have any use for the features of a dedicated laptop that I can't already do on my gaming PC or a school computer so getting a laptop would seem redundant (for me anyway). It was a good purchase and I'm defiantly getting my moneys worth out of it and with a battery life as impressive as whats in the iPad Pro its hard not to. Thanks again Andrew!

Artist here. Prior to my iPad Pro 9.7 and Apple Pencil, I had never owned a display tablet. While I will admit that a cintiq or huiom is more specialised for artists, I feel like I get a lot out of my tablet thanks to its portability. Most of my tablets through out the years have been no bigger than a single on of my hands (and mine are tiny) so upgrading to a 9.7 touch display has changed the way I create art.
On the Apple Pencil itself: I feel like the Pencil has good weight to it, it's not too heavy but not too light either. My issue with Wacom is that the pens are so light that I don't feel like I'm drawing. Other third parties have AA batteries in them weighing them down too much, which is far from ideal for drawing. The progression of pressure sensitivity could be updated as it is not as smooth as Wacom (basically industry standard) but it gets the job done.
For people who want a device they can draw on and use for watching Netflix on the go or reading books, the iPad Pro + Apple Pencil combo is fantastic. (Especially in an official Apple case because then you can get that perfect drawing angle 😩👌🏽)

I have had 3 Notes including the Note 7. Stylus brilliant for making quick notes for appointments, events. Screen is narrow. Stylus would be more useful on my 6S Plus with its wider screen. Stylus makes tablet phones much more useful.

I would like the next generation Apple Pencil to have a small LED dot near the cap that could give a quick indicator of battery level using green, orange, red or similar. Apart from that I really enjoy using it for drawing and general navigation.

Thanks for these videos, they've helped me decide on the Apple Pencil. Not too long ago there wasn't a good variety to choose from if you wanted accuracy, and now we have this thing that essentially reproduces the functionality of a tablet on the iPad.
I would however like to add that some people can't afford the Pencil and the iPad Pro, and would in fact get good use out of it if it were compatible with a Plus version of the iPhone. I'm actually waiting on my first iPad Pro to come in the mail, and in the meantime, have actually been doing a decent job getting some art tasks done on my 6 Plus, even without a stylus (mostly in Assembly and Photofox by Enlight). I've really been looking forward to getting an iPad Pro so I can utilize Affinity, and I think I'd really be able to get the most out of it with the Pencil. Until I get the Pencil and my iPad Pro arrives though, I do alright on my 6 Plus. If I can't, that's why professional artists have desktop Macs and tablets.
    *TL;DR*
It's be nice to have compatibility added to iPhones for artists on a budget. Apple shit is the best for artists, but it's expensive.

I am a uni student using the apple pencil for nearly 3 to 4 hours daily. To be honest, at the end of the day it's frustrating to write on it becoz the tip is hard and doesn't have the cushion effect like surface pen offers.

Your stylus opinion benefit you and those who have the same needs or preference. However, there are those who strongly disagree for the same reasons.
Example, one of the main reasons why I got the note 8 vs the iPhone 8 or X, was how effective the stylus was for my current day to day needs; Quick access to add notes, draw, get personal information, edit, and also multi task.
The stylus is an amazing tool that you can use, but is a choice an option! vs the iPhone who basically don’t want anything to do with it. for many it’s a real deal breaker. I like to have options and the note series gives you those options.
Apple could just have it so they create a smaller version of the apple pen and have both be compatible with the iPhone, like they did with the new iPad 2018. But they didn’t it, if they had that option it would’ve been way more appealing.

Yep, 2 years later and I still use the Pencil every day... never lost a cap, tip or charger adapter, and never had an issue or mishap with the iPad direct charging method when I've needed a "quick charge"... perhaps careless people don't deserve nice things(?) :)
One caveat, I purchased one of those capacitive "dumb" stylus caps that replaces the Pencil cap and use it to navigate my iPad/internet and * gasp * my iPhone (because big fingers/small buttons) interchangeably with my fingers, as most times I prefer the feel of the rubber tip and lack of tapping noise on the glass screen for those kinds of operations, so it wouldn't hurt my feelings if the Pencil worked on iPhone as well.

  • @moviemix-ups1123

Probably the best stylus would have:1) a good feel to it2) multiple controls (pressure, angle, etc.)3) color choice (some colors were bold in the video but what about gold or space gray?)4) MAGNETIC charging, attaching to the side of the tablet5) built-in battery
 Pencil needs to update, yes. But the Surface pen could use a revision too.

As a person who said he isn't a non artist you have a biased view on styluses...styluses were made for more accurate touchscreen use before the days of capacitive touch.. And as a medico i appreciate how easy it is to jot down something important as the samsung notes are the same size as a pocketbook... Obviously the samsung ads tend to show too much productivity coming out of an s pen.. But all things aside an s pen good for those quick notes and markups before whatsapping an image.. Say a lesion in a ct scan... As opposed to to mark8ng up text books with an apple pencil

  • @kazikian

You contradict yourself saying it helps precision but isn't useful on a smaller display where it's even harder to be precise with your finger!

    • @quinchonez
      @quinchonez 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

thats because on a phone mobile apps and mobile websites are designed to work fine with your finger, so you don't need to be extremely precise, but if you need to do something creative like photo editing, video editing, sketching then a stylus makes it easier to be precise, but you don't do that on a phone because its too small, you do it on a tablet. In conclusion you get an apple pencil on the iPad and your finger on the iPhone.

My Apple pencil experience is very negative. I tried using it for work. Blue tooth - keep disconnecting. I then had to keep plugging it into the iPad. Very often. Major PIA..... Not to mention it has to charge. It's also way to big. Was a waste of money unless you like to color and draw.

I disagree about using a stylus on a phone. I just came back from a trip with my niece. She is deaf. Her phone has a stylus and were were able to communicate in the car. This was great. This is also good for persons that have lost the ability for speech. It’s also great for writing a list of foods to pick up at the grocery store.

I use my Apple Pencil everyday. I use it mainly with Concepts, LumaFusion and Affinity Photo and ran currently trying Shapr3D. In my opinion apps like this are pretty useless unless you have the pencil. But even note taking and general navigation on the device I better as I don’t have to move my whole arm across the iPad all the time.

Sorry.... but the S pen is a great feature on the Note series. I used it a lot on my Note 4 and Note 7 for my business.... especially it in the field on job sites. No matter how much your bias tries to write off the S pen on the Note as a gimmick or nothing good..... in reality a lot of people love it and it is an amazing thing. And again.... if Apple came out with a pen feature built into the iPhone and it offered the features that the S pen offers.... you would be all about it. ✌

Hey T tech love your vids, was wondering if you would recommend upgrading from an i phone 6 to an i phone 7 plus? Also why do you dislike white bezels on the front of apple products?

Too late wait for the iPhone edion, U should have bought a 7 plus at realease cuz a 6 is 2 almost 3 years old. I Switched from a 6s to a 7 plus and i fell the diference.

Why doesn’t apple make the apple pen be able to use for previous Apple iPads? It’s not fair :I they could’ve made more better if it was available for the other iPads from Apple .-.

Samsung should continue the note tablet line up. They would completely outshine the iPad pro and apple pencil

anthony nkwocha except the fact that the iPad is a tablet and the note is a phone..... two very different categories....

Please do a Surface Pro (5) vs iPad Pro (2017 models) comparison. I'm confused on which one of these two I should purchase with my savings.
(I'm looking for a tablet, not a laptop replacement, quite happy with my MacBook Pro!)

Md. Abdul Ahad Chowdhury depends if you want apps ,music or media consumption get the iPad. The surface is really only useful for writing essays or books or if your in business. The windows store has absolutely nothing in it compared to the App Store unless you use steam and only play games.

It would be nice to see a bezel-less iPad pro, with a matte screen so that it feels more like pen and paper. Only then will I buy it. ;)
