While you are correct that ants, bees and wasps are picked due to their high popularity, it's also what's making them so strong. Since they gain the passive ability "Colonizing", they gain a multiplier to their attack, intelligence and speed when near a team group, catering to new players, gaining more popularity and therefore increasing the efficiency and power of this types of insects. This however brings the major drawback of the passive status "Loneliness", which causes the insects speed, attack, defense, and intelligence to be halved and locks all abilities and attacks when separated from a team group. This causes a easy to learn insect for new players, but causes other insects to be pushed out of the meta, causing the "Extinction" state, permanently deleting all data on that insect, making the meta more and more skewered to the favor of ants, bees and wasps.

0:52 Apparently the reason why a female mantis eats a male mantis during the mating process is because it provides them with the nutrients it needs for her and her offspring to survive. Especially in the case were the female has not had a sufficient meal but not all pray mantises eat their mates.
For what it's worth, female mantis eating the male during or after mating is not nearly as common as some people think. Mantis are cannibalistic in general, males just tend to be smaller than females and if the female rejects or does not recognize his advances, she's liable to just eat him the same way he would if he had the opportunity and was not trying to mate. If they actually do mate then he has a good chance of surviving.
