Love this! Also enjoyed the little pun in Ep 24, where Fan Xian is waiting to meet the 2nd Prince's mother and says: 'Now I think I know why she's called Noble Consort Shu.' As the 'Shu' (淑) character in her title, 'virtuous' and 'refined', has very similar pronunciation to the character (书) for 'book'.
The protagonist’s name 范闲 in a lot of Southern dialects (e.g. Jiangsu dialects) sounds EXACTLY the same as the word 犯嫌 “being annoying”. So...lolololololol E.g. In my hometown, if you say: this kid is so “fan xian”! It means this kid is so annoying XD

I also love the nicknames that were given by characters in this dramas to each other: Like Da Bao calling Fan Xian; 'Xiao Xian Xian' which annoyed him. Or Fan Xian playing name to Gong Dian and calling him 'Lou Gong' which translated as 'husband' in Mandarin. XD
Being able to understand Mandarin and the cultural context, I loved the little jokes and puns in "Joy of Life", but I always wondered how translators would or even could translate them to other languages. On the comment about double names, when Wu Gang (plays Chen Pingping) first read the script, he thought that he was going to play a female character.
Ooh I definitely missed some of these when I was watching! One of my favourite ones, that I don't think was mentioned in the video, is when Fan Xian brought persimmons (shi zi) to that one nobleman's manor and was like: "you're the shi zi (heir to a household), so it's only right for me to give you shi zi (persimmons)."
I enjoy your videos very much. I just wanted to point out something funny in Joy of Life that if you’re not a medical professional you might have missed. I’m a retired pharmacist and the bane of our existence before computers was trying to read doctors horrible handwriting. When characters continually commented on Fan Tian’s terrible handwriting, I cracked up. He was a doctor before his ‘rebirth’ and passed himself off as a doctor several times, so bad handwriting goes along with his character.
I know this comment is old, but wanted to mention that in this (Chinese) context it's kind of different. "Bad"/hard to read Chinese handwriting is usually a squiggly mess, like bad English handwriting. The way Fan Xian writes is more like the handwriting of a child just beginning to learn. Therefore his handwriting isn't "bad" in that it's hard to read like a physician's handwriting, but "bad" in that it looks extremely clumsy/crude.

I laughed so hard at the disk/cd joke when it aired bc in the motherland (Mexico). People approach u all the time while you are eating or just passing through trying to sell you pirated movies or music cds. So it just reminded me of those moments & I cracked up! lol

Not exactly a pun but a running gag I really liked was the fact that Fan Xian kept trying to convince people he didn't write Red Mansions and accidentally plagiarizes a really famous author by becoming famous. I'm pretty sure there's also a line that goes something like "the ending was bad" referencing the fact that Red Mansions was completed by a different author and a lot of fans don't recognize the ending
There's a really funny line too somewhere around EP 20-some (sorry can't remember exactly where) where Fan Xian goes to meet the emperor for the first time. And then he learns the name of Gong Dian, and he says something like how all his friends must call him "老宮" ("Old Gong" - like a nickname for him using his last name, but also is homophonous with "husband")，and he makes the comment that the friends "真会占便宜" (taking advantage of him). I thought that one was pretty hilarious too!
Yes! That part is my favourite so far; I believe its in ep 19. That kind of punny play on words is great, and I'm glad that my Mandarin is good enough that I catch get some of these. Understand so much more after watching this video, though! Appreciate these 'knowledgeable' videos so. 🙌
Ohh my Chinese is good enough for this one: LaoGong (viejo gong) In China they use to add Lao (old) before the name to express friendship, but in this case: laogong means husband. So It would be funny for a friend call another friend husband.

Chen Ping Ping reminds me of my dad's name. It's also very feminine. In his generation they have to have the exact same word in their names. I don't know how to type it in Chinese but it's Xia. So my dad's name is Zhao Bei Xia. Bei=north, xia= I think it's woman? So in high school people thought he's a girl. The boys in school circled all the girls name, and my dad's name was circled. He asked them to erase it.

I always have questions about 'idioms' when watching CDramas and appreciate any explanations. there's one, though, I've seen in a couple dramas that i'm not clear on... when Fan Xian was reading the letter from his mom..she said she 'pulled the emperor's beard'. She actually pulled the beard of the former emperor, as you may notice, mother of Fan Xian had been quite a rebel and defied convention and authority, the empress dowager still doesn't like her.
Many chinese have straight beard. Its a common trope for very naughty children to pluck their grandad's beard, especially while the elderly is asleep. Also when parents go discpline their children after such misbehaviour, one of the most common scarstic lines they gonna throw at the children goes something like this: eh! you wanna try pluck a tiger next time? that will teach you a lesson, you are lucky your grandpa is never gonna eat you.
In Chinese there many different characters but have same or almost the same pronunciation example the person’s family name Zhu as in pearl. But Pig is also have the same sound, you get the picture. 😅
This drama is so good, the storyline, the acting, the setting, everything is just so good. Definitely one of my faves from 2019! Can't wait for season 2 and hope you are enjoying :)
Started watching S1 now, and a bit nervous about what people say of S2... still, can't stop watching :D the drama is not perfect, but is really peculiar.
@@Damonistique Season 1 of Ever Night is comparable to Tribes and Empires in terms of quality, while season 2 looks like it was filmed by high school students with high school actors playing the characters. A large swathe of the veteran supporting actors and actresses as well as newer skilled actors and actresses got replaced wholesale in season 2 with really terrible actors and actresses. The scenes looked as if the crew didn't know about the concept of lighting. And that's just scratching the surface.
I've been watching Pillow Book, but once Joy of Life finishes subbing, I'll finish the series. There's an idiom in Pillow Book I didn't understand, but neither did Feng Jiu, so... half hoping for an explanation. The line about the nightingale... seemed like a literary reference.
@@AvenueX123 Episode 3, Feng Jiu drops her hairpin. About 2/3rds into the episode (around the 30:00 minute mark). Feng jiu has finished making sweet and sour fish. Dijun's foster sister has come back and wants credit for the fish, so has seen him with Feng Jiu, who has dropped her hairpin. He has picked it up and is admiring the hairpin. Dijun asks "What is the flower on the dropped hairpin?" Feng Jiu says it's from the stars in Qingqui. So then he says, "When a nightingale strays into the Milkyway who can tell how many years it's been through?" But it feels like something is lost in translation. Because his foster sister seems to understand the remark and reflects back on it in episode 4, (beginning), but Feng Jiu herself doesn't seem to understand what it means. The drama gives it such weight, but it doesn't really work in English well.
I was hoping that one thing explained would be why Fan Xian objects to the nickname that Wan’er’s brother gives him upon their first meeting. He mentions that it’s inappropriate but the subs didn’t say why, and I have no idea how to search for it.
When GaoDa (高达) was introduced, and Fanxian's replied was "扎古 (Zaku)", my husband literally fell off his seat (my place is a museum of Gundam models). A small Mobile Suit Gundam reference: RX-78 Gundam was a new prototype war machine. Just like the character here in the TV series, GaoDa himself is an excellent swordsman, but very naive of everything else. So he needs someone (a good pilot like FanXian) to guide him in the right direction. I came across more interesting parallel references between FanXian's final task in season 1 to Mobile Suit Gandam story plot, such as The Federaion, the young pilot and the purpose of the war. Fan Xian's name is also a joke. It's the same pronunciation of "criminal suspect" 犯嫌。 And joke on selling disc I think it's more about adult videos or illegal pirate discs are also commonly sold this way on the street in modern time then just also means dish.
出恭should be translated as having bowel movements not going to the bathroom. If used going to the bathroom, then the meaning would have been lost in translation.

I believed you meant DaBao hahah, which translate to big(大) and precious(宝). xiaoxianxian or 小闲闲, xianxian being from his name fanXIAN and xiao meaning little, it can be seen as nickname of sort. As she explained in the video, when it's a double character, usually it's a nickname for one's actual name. xiao also can be used as a nickname when attached to a character of one's name, ex. 小范(xiao fan), 小闲 (xiao xian). In the format of 小XX or xiao [X][X], it's usually a way to annoy or tease the person. It's not rude, it's just a fun little nickname to annoy FX. Another way to use this formate 小XX is when people who you are close to, especially lovers, occasionally call teach others to show affection and to "act cute."

Chen Ping Ping reminds me of my dad's name. It's also very feminine. In his generation they have to have the exact same word in their names. I don't know how to type it in Chinese but it's Xia. So my dad's name is Zhao Bei Xia. Bei=north, xia= I think it's woman?
So in high school people thought he's a girl. The boys in school circled all the girls name, and my dad's name was circled. He asked them to erase it.

I always have questions about 'idioms' when watching CDramas and appreciate any explanations. there's one, though, I've seen in a couple dramas that i'm not clear on... when Fan Xian was reading the letter from his mom..she said she 'pulled the emperor's beard'. Can you explain that expression for us ??

She actually pulled the beard of the former emperor, as you may notice, mother of Fan Xian had been quite a rebel and defied convention and authority, the empress dowager still doesn't like her.
Many chinese have straight beard. Its a common trope for very naughty children to pluck their grandad's beard, especially while the elderly is asleep. Also when parents go discpline their children after such misbehaviour, one of the most common scarstic lines they gonna throw at the children goes something like this: eh! you wanna try pluck a tiger next time? that will teach you a lesson, you are lucky your grandpa is never gonna eat you.

In Chinese there many different characters but have same or almost the same pronunciation example the person’s family name Zhu as in pearl. But Pig is also have the same sound, you get the picture. 😅

This drama is so good, the storyline, the acting, the setting, everything is just so good. Definitely one of my faves from 2019! Can't wait for season 2 and hope you are enjoying :)

Started watching S1 now, and a bit nervous about what people say of S2... still, can't stop watching :D the drama is not perfect, but is really peculiar.
@@Damonistique Season 1 of Ever Night is comparable to Tribes and Empires in terms of quality, while season 2 looks like it was filmed by high school students with high school actors playing the characters.
A large swathe of the veteran supporting actors and actresses as well as newer skilled actors and actresses got replaced wholesale in season 2 with really terrible actors and actresses. The scenes looked as if the crew didn't know about the concept of lighting. And that's just scratching the surface.

I've been watching Pillow Book, but once Joy of Life finishes subbing, I'll finish the series. There's an idiom in Pillow Book I didn't understand, but neither did Feng Jiu, so... half hoping for an explanation. The line about the nightingale... seemed like a literary reference.

Dijun's foster sister has come back and wants credit for the fish, so has seen him with Feng Jiu, who has dropped her hairpin. He has picked it up and is admiring the hairpin.
Dijun asks "What is the flower on the dropped hairpin?"
Feng Jiu says it's from the stars in Qingqui.
So then he says, "When a nightingale strays into the Milkyway who can tell how many years it's been through?"
But it feels like something is lost in translation. Because his foster sister seems to understand the remark and reflects back on it in episode 4, (beginning), but Feng Jiu herself doesn't seem to understand what it means. The drama gives it such weight, but it doesn't really work in English well.

When GaoDa (高达) was introduced, and Fanxian's replied was "扎古 (Zaku)", my husband literally fell off his seat (my place is a museum of Gundam models).
A small Mobile Suit Gundam reference:
RX-78 Gundam was a new prototype war machine. Just like the character here in the TV series, GaoDa himself is an excellent swordsman, but very naive of everything else. So he needs someone (a good pilot like FanXian) to guide him in the right direction.
I came across more interesting parallel references between FanXian's final task in season 1 to Mobile Suit Gandam story plot, such as The Federaion, the young pilot and the purpose of the war. You can check for yourself.

Fan Xian's name is also a joke. It's the same pronunciation of "criminal suspect" 犯嫌。 And joke on selling disc I think it's more about adult videos or illegal pirate discs are also commonly sold this way on the street in modern time then just also means dish.
出恭should be translated as having bowel movements not going to the bathroom. If used going to the bathroom, then the meaning would have been lost in translation.

Ive been always wondering why he hated so much being called "xiaoxianxian" when daobao ( if i remember correctly) kept on calling him that name . Is it something rude to call people that way or is there any other particular meaning about it? please let me know and thank you in advance
I believed you meant DaBao hahah, which translate to big(大) and precious(宝). xiaoxianxian or 小闲闲, xianxian being from his name fanXIAN and xiao meaning little, it can be seen as nickname of sort. As she explained in the video, when it's a double character, usually it's a nickname for one's actual name. xiao also can be used as a nickname when attached to a character of one's name, ex. 小范(xiao fan), 小闲 (xiao xian). In the format of 小XX or xiao [X][X], it's usually a way to annoy or tease the person. It's not rude, it's just a fun little nickname to annoy FX. Another way to use this formate 小XX is when people who you are close to, especially lovers, occasionally call teach others to show affection and to "act cute."
