A Quilting Tragedy | My Fat Quarter Shop 2023 Designer Mystery Block of the Month Quilt

- One of the saddest things that can happen to a quilter has happened to me...my finished quilt top has gone missing en route to my long arm quilter. I am heartbroken that, after a year of work, my completed 2023 Designer Mystery Block of the Month quilt will not be enjoyed in the way I had intended.
Despite this tragic turn of events, I'm thankful I have this small bit of footage to share with you and remember it by. What a great quilt it would have been!
#quilting #missingquilt #blockofthemonth
Any updates on this quilt. I have been following you hoping to see your 2024 Designer Mystery. ❤
You are so kind and considerate for checking in! Unfortunately as of now, the quilt is still lost. The tracking hasn't been updated since early June and I received an insurance claim check from USPS. Of course, I would take my quilt back over that check any day! But it was at least a small consolation that the cost of some of the materials was recouped; of course not my time and love that went into it, though! Although I would love to get it back one day, I'm focusing my energy on new quilts and thankful for a valuable lesson this experience was!
@@EaddysCraftRoomyou may still get it! A package of mine was lost and USPS paid out then I got the package 3 months later!
Heartbreaking! I thankfully have an excellent long arm quilter in my town I found when I first started quilting in 2023. I am so sorry for your loss. Praying it gets returned. USPS is not what it used to be!
I’m so sorry!! 😭 What a tragic thing to happen to a beautiful quilter and her equally beautiful quilt!!
You are so kind. Thank you for your kind words!
I’m so sorry 😢 I feel your pain. I really hope your quilt is returned to you. It was beautiful. And thank you for sharing your story. A very good lesson for us all.
You are too kind. Thank you for your words of encouragement.
I’m sorry, I love your positive attitude. Sometimes life is messy….I hope it find you.
So sorry for your loss and disappointment. So thankful that you shared the story with us. It is a beautiful quilt. I appreciate hearing about the mystery quilt program. This is the kind of thing I love to learn about. I pray the quilt is found and returned to you.
Thank you so much for your kind words and prayers! I hope so too! But I'm grateful it's been a helpful story for some to hear.
I am so sorry! I truly hope that the USPS finds your quilt. It's not just the cost of the materials, its the time and love that you put into it that is non-reimbursable.
I am so sorry.Your quilt is stunning, thank you for sharing
Thank you! 😊
I am so sorry for your wonderful quilt.
I hope you’ll find it back
Take care
I am really sorry to hear of your loss. I can't imagine loosing a quilt that so much hard work had gone into. This is the very reason I never mail a quilt for quilting. If I can't quilt it on my sewing machine, I hand tie it. My heartfelt condolences.
I started quilting my own when prices went up so much. So sorry for your loss, hope it’s found and returned.
Hoping things turn around and the lost is found. You are taking this very well, thank you for sharing.
Oh wow. So sorry it is a beautiful quilt. Praying the quilt is located
Thank you so much! Me too!
So sorry to hear. This is one of my quilting nightmares. I used UPS to mail a quilt to my brother in the same state and it was a pretty good experience so hope if you use them in future, it will be a good experience for you too. And better yet, that your quilt finds its way back to you.
I'm glad to hear you have had a good experience! I've always had a good experience with UPS as well and will continue to use them in the future!
Oh Wow, that’s so sad, I had sent off to a long arm out of state, and it was cut down from a king to a queen. That was a gift, very upsetting. Hopefully, it does show up for you.
If you purchased the postage at the counter, and it’s been less than three months. They should be able to look up your tracking number by the address you mailed it to. I’ve had to do this before myself when I’ve lost a tracking number. But you have to do it at the counter that you purchased it at.
I'm going to do that today! Thanks so much.
Thank you so much for sharing your story. I’m so sorry this has happened to you. This was timely that I found your video today. Shortly I will be shipping a wall hanging to a friend, and I was thinking that I should use UPS, your video confirms this decision. Please take care and fingers crossed that you retrieve your quilt.
OHHHHH this sucks!! Beautiful quilt, so much work-I am so sorry! You did not do the wrong thng mailing it, it is just theft is so rampant, many packages that I receive are sometimes a little torn as if someone looked inside....I really hope you find it!
OMGosh, I am so sorry that your quilt is lost , that would have devastated me.
Thank you so much! It is terribly hard. 😢
I've had similar experiences with USPS. Two (yes, 2) big boxes of quilting supplies I sent from Minnesota to Iowa and they BOTH went missing. No idea where they could have ended up - VERY frustrating!
NO. Oh that is awful! I'm so sorry to hear that. I'm sure they were quite valuable. My heart goes out to you!
@@EaddysCraftRoom Yes! There was quite a big of yardage along with books enclosed.
I am so sorry this happened! May I be the bringing of ways to look at this differently? If it really never shows up, I find in situations like this to allow myself to be sad and grieve for a little bit and then think of it as a really large donation to.... someone, somewhere. Somehow thinking this way sits better on my heart. Rather than, "I was wronged"
(and a silly option) the quilting heavens found a mistake and they didn't want you to find it. 😂😂
But I really hope it shows up, it really is lovely! Thank you for sharing your story.
I love this perspective! Thank you for sharing 💜
Ugh!! What a gut punch! I’m so sorry. Your quilt is beautiful and hopefully it’ll resurface soon. I don’t know where you live but here in Metro Atlanta we have had horrible issues with USPS. Packages and letters go missing for weeks or longer. It’s sad because they used to be very reliable. Now I only ship UPS when it’s something important. It’s more expensive but I’ve learned it’s worth it. Hopefully your quilt will be found!! You’re handling this better than I would. ❤
Don't lose hope! I mailed a quilt for my newborn granddaughter and it didn't arrive. My daughter spent hours searching, building to building and nothing. We, like you, resigned ourselves that it was just gone. About a week or so later she sends me a text with a picture of the quilt! It finally arrived. We don't know how or where it had been but it showed up! I do hope your quilt finds it's way to the long armer or back to you. PS I always put a piece of paper inside any package I mail with my address and the destination address just in case it finds its way to some "lost and found room". If they open it, it has info to forward. I do hope your quilt finds its way back to you. It is just beautiful!
Oh I'm so happy to hear your quilt eventually made it to your daughter and granddaughter! I hope mine eventually turns up as well. Great tip about putting your return address inside the package as well!
That is tragic! I’m sorry that happened to you!
I once had a FedEx package with tracking, insurance, etc. get “lost” ($300 birthday gift in it) and never recovered. Furthermore, fedEx did nothing to help find it and just said it was lost, so don’t assume having tracking will prevent it from getting lost. I am convinced a FedEx employee stole this package. I hope your quilt resurfaces one day ❤.
Oh no how terrible! I'm so sorry that happened to you. A great lesson that sometimes those add-ons don't make a difference. Thank you for your well wishes.
That is so sad! I have only had one issue with USPS and they did find my package after about two weeks of me looking. I always track it very closely and file as soon as I possibly can if it goes awry. I do always get insurance on quilts when shipping though :(
oh no, breaks my heart too. Praying it comes back to you
Thank you! Me too!
So sorry to hear...that's terrible and upsetting!
I am in a sewing group and one of the ladies did this quilt. Truly a gorgeous quilt. You should remake it! Don’t let the P.O. anywhere near it.
I mailed a very cute quilted panel wall hanging to my daughter on June 17. Today is August 9. I am hoping it is in the quagmire at Palmetto Distribution Center in ATL and she will still receive it one day.
😭 NO MORE USPS FOR ME.
Oh no! The tracking on mine says it's also stuck in Atlanta! Something is going on there! You are so right. Never again. I am so very sorry for your loss. I truly understand and feel the pain!
Awe Girl I am so sorry!!
Thank you!
Oh my! So sad after your heart and time poured into the beautiful quilt. Know others have suggested a few helpful ideas. Here are my ideas:
1)Take a cell phone picture of your receipts, tracker numbers, and the quilt in the box.
2) Place an Apple Air tag in every box. Be sure your quilter knows it is there so he/she will ship it back to you with the quilt. You could even have it sewn into the corner of the quilt.
3) Insurance and signature required. Don’t know if the signature is needed or not. At a minimum it requires extra attention through the shipping process.
Love all of these tips! Definitely implementing the Air Tag tip moving forward! Thank you!
My goodness that is devastating now someone else is enjoying your work
It's truly so sad! If it stays lost for good, I would hope that someone else is enjoying it rather than it being abandoned in a shipping warehouse somewhere.
I'm so sorry this happened to you. Hopefully it will show up. 😢❤❤
Thank you for your sympathy! I hope so too! 💗
I learned in a very sad life story that "Life is not Fair" and truly this happened to you. I have made two quilts from the Fat Quarter Shop kits, I did however purchase 3 finishing kits and 2 backing from Fat Quarter Shop. I am almost finished sewing my two quilts, made one for two of my married sons. I am so very sorry this happened to you. If you still have your scraps, there is enough to made another quilt if you want to try and make another quilt.
You are so right! This is a great example of "life's not fair." I may close the chapter on this particular quilt, but someone here did suggest making a miniature version of it with the scraps. If I do it again, I may end up going that route in memory of the full-size one.
Thats why i send my quilt tops with registered & a signature . I had the completed quilt top & extra fBric stolen off the front porch...great sadness
That is awful! I am so sorry to hear that happened to you! Yes, sending my quilt tops with extra securities moving forward!
darn! so sorry.
Thank you!
Oh no. What a tragedy. I always go to a local long armer because of this. Praying you get your quilt back soon.
I think that's what I'll have to do from here on out! Thank you!
So sorry.... I know the amount of time and effort that goes into a quilt.... I have had packages mis-routed by usps before and I can honestly say that eventually it all worked out. Yes, it will drive you bananas until it gets to it's destination.... but, it will get there. I'm thinking the max time it took for a first class package was 6 weeks (during covid times).... but yes, it is VERY important to hold onto that tracking number. Without that, there really isn't any way the USPS can track down your package and move it along.... don't give up hope!
Perhaps try your local quilt guild.... my gf in NY lives wat out on the island but belongs to the Brooklyn quilt guild.... she picks up tops at meetings and then returns finished sandwiches back to people at the meeting.... you might find this arrangement in your area.... good luck :)
A great idea! Thank you!
I have never had any issues with USPS. I do get insurance and tracking and never say therenis a quilt in the package. Hopefully they can help you find it!
I'm so happy to hear that! Unfortunately, they haven't been able to come through on this one for me, but I hope and pray it's a rare occurrence!
Oh so sorry this happened to you prayers it gets returned to you
Thank you so much!
I am so very sorry, your quilt was gorgeous.😢You were so kind to share your experience, it’s a very tough one to go through, and I’m sure it was very emotional. All of the work you did, and anticipation of the finished quilt, it’s so much. I believe you should really try to find someone local, and you won’t have this worry again. I learned my lesson years ago when I mailed a beautiful scarf I crocheted for a friend in Germany, which she never received. I had tracking on it, which stopped in Chicago, and they had no answers for me. I didn’t spend nearly the amount of time you did on your quilt, but it hurt in a weird way that someone took my creation intended for a friend. Sending you good wishes for finding a local long armer that you love. Your quilts are gorgeous.❤
Oh I am so sorry to hear about your beautiful gift for a friend that never made its way to her! So heartbreaking. Thank you so much for your kind words. On to the next project!
This is heartbreaking! Maybe it’ll show up!
Here’s my advice: find a local long arm quilter. Ask her to come to you. You’re willing to spend 40 bucks to mail it, offer it to her to come to you instead. She’s offering you a service, she should be willing to go an extra step to make that happen.
I did this quilt as well and so I know there’s enough fabric left over to make another .. you may have to be creative with the setting .. or hunt down more fabric, but when things settle down and the sting doesn’t sting quite as much, make it again. FQS offers patterns for smaller blocks on their blog .. I think 3 and 6 inch? Make a smaller version! Again, so sorry this happened.
Such great advice, thank you! I actually started a scrap quilt with my remaining fabric from this BOM so although I may not recreate the exact pattern, I'm happy to have the beautiful fabric used in another special project. And I love your idea about creating a mini version of this quilt. A fantastic idea that I may have to try :)
I am so sorry about losing your quilt! Hopefully it won’t be lost forever and is just stuck somewhere between yiu and the quilter!!, We never send anything other than a card with a stamp via USPS! I don’t even mail our property tax check via mail - I just drive the 15 miles or so to the local Tax office and hand them the check - and then I get a receipt thst we have paid. I always use the UPS store near us for sending any kind of box or something that needs to be somewhere - I’ve lost patience and trust with the Post Office.
FedEx has lost many many of my packages missouri star and cotton cuts orders out from missouri I absolutely never get and it's so difficult because I want everything they have when I find it I quilt all my own quilts so that saves me on a long armer hopefully one day in future I'll have me a long arm ❤
You can also put a tracker inside the package. I heard someone else do this when they send off important things. So sorry you lost your quilt. I hope you find it.
Great idea! I would never have thought about adding in one of these trackers! Perhaps this is a very good suggestion for any quilter (or others!) when sending a quilt out to be quilted!
Sorry about your quilt. USPS has lost 2 money orders that I’ve had to send this summer, it’s incredibly frustrating.
I'm so sorry to hear that! Thank you for your sympathy.
I am so sorry. I recently mailed a quilt someone requested and when I went to ship it the gal did tell me it is difficult to file a claim through USPS.
Thank you! Yes, I am learning that. Definitely an upsetting experience!
@@EaddysCraftRoom it’s a sucky way to find it out. I am glad you shared your experience so others can be aware of risks. I really hope it turns up.
@@EaddysCraftRoom I have not finished mine. I could send you my left over fabric from the blocks and the finishing fabric if you would like. I am not sure if I want to do all the additional work to do it all. I would keep the backing. I think that between my scraps and any you have you could remake it.
I pray it shows up!!
Thank you!
❤❤
Thanks so sad!!!! You look beautiful though!!
Aw thank you so much!
Keep in contact with your quilter, it may still show up. My uncle printed a book that I had spent nearly a year working on, he shipped it with usps at book rate. Book rate means there is no rush and no tracking and this was during covid. It finally showed up at my house about 8 months later.
You’ll be lamenting this. In your dotage. My heart breaks for you. It may show up eventually. Live in hope and sew on.
Thank you so much 💜
keep following up. same thing happened to a quilt i sent and it took 40 days for it to be located and arrive at its destination
Your story gives me hope! Thank you!
I mail everything USPS. I get a tracking number with each one.
I send a lot of packages to Fort Walton Beach, FL. One sat in Pensacola for over a week and wasn't delivered until the recipient called the Post Office. Check into the insurance. If you don't have a purchase receipt or appraisal, the insurance is pointless.
How awful!! I am so sorry. I am sure you will find someone in your area, especially if you are asking for pantographs, which are pretty generic. Maybe it will turn up. Let's hope :)
My Dear Jane disappeared - I know the pain. I had put special dates & events on the seam allowances.
Not your Dear Jane!! Oh my word my heart is broken for you! I am so so sorry. I pray it will one day return to you!
The real tragedy was block making was part of a precious Dear Jane group and class with Brenda when she taught at La Conner Washington. It was 20 years ago. I have been tempted to start again - but makes me sad. It was a very special group of ladies
That's why I quilt my own quilts 🤷♀️
I mailed my taxes 2nd day air to IRS. Month later...they arrived. USPS isn't great these days. I'll hope this happened to your quilt, and you'll be sharing that news with us down the road.
Oh that is so upsetting! Unfortunately, I just received a check in the mail from my USPS insurance claim and the tracking hasn't been updated in a month. So it may be a lost cause. But still praying for a miracle!
Oh no. I have had things lost, never to be seen again, in the mail, but once I ordered something from China. I waited and waited and it never came. I live in Australia and usually it's not too slow. I gave up and forgot about it, cutting my losses, then one day seven months later my parcel turns up??? I don't know where it had been or what was going on, I think it must have flown around Australia for seven months because the last tracking I got was from Aust Post saying it had cleared customs and then it all went silent. So maybe, just maybe there is a glimmer of hope but as you say, don't count on it. On with the next project. Sigh.
7 months is quite a long time, but your story gives me some hope that it may show up one day! Even if I have to wait a while for that day to come!
Oh I am sooooo sorry. I cried along with you. Here's hoping that USPS can find that package.
Thank you so much! Still holding out a bit of hope it will one day reappear. 💙
😭
👋🥺. Oh no. I have a friend who puts those gps type tags in her boxes that she mails. I really do hope it shows up. 🤞🏻🤞🏻
That is a GREAT idea! Can't believe I haven't thought of that before! Thank you!
Pat Sloan shared this happening to a finished quilt destined for a photo shoot for a book. She had to remake the promised quilt. She was not pleased. Sorry for you too! USPS, Uncertain Sorting of Parcels and Selective returns.
As heartbroken as I am that it happened to Pat Sloan, that makes me feel better to know it's also happened to one of the greats!
USPS is kinda awful. ☹️
@EaddysCraftRoom Thats why I shared; glad it helped.
Here's some advice from someone who sends out her quilts: Post a photo of the missing quilt on the missing quilt website. Place your top in a sealed plastic bag that includes a slip of paper with your name, address, and phone number as well as the name, address, and phone number of the machine quilter. As soon as you mail the package, send the machine quilter your tracking number so (s)he can keep an eye out for your work of art, but be sure to keep your slip from USPS with the tracking number. I hope it is found!
That is terrible 😢. So sorry. Even the insurance money wouldn’t have replaced the quilt.
You are so right! I said to my husband last night, "I don't even want any money back, I just want my quilt!"
Awful...but better on the way there than the way back.... i fear this same thing as i mail mine. I use priority mail.
This is just awful
Thank you for your sympathy!
While its unfortunate its not "tragic" , school shootings, homes destroyed in natural disasters..THATS TRAGIC. Thats life, we invest our time and there isnt alway going to be a payout, we can form attachment to things and they break down or 'go missing' its all on how you loom at it and deal with it but to say its tragic ..nah not really .. its a 1st world problem that the post office has lost track of your package
I think she titled her video “A Quilting Tragedy”. While what you mention are actually human tragic events…this was still tragic to the person that spent many hours and a lot of money on something that gave her joy. Lighten up!
