@@ejentabi I bet there must be some duets with a lot of great singers out there. But with Dimash it's just gonna be a very mesmerising performance.

It's a great pleasure to see how much you took joy from this magical performance by Sohyang. This performance has such a strong sense of story-telling that Sohyang's singing always seems cinematic in her vocal expression. The original song carries a much simpler melody portraying the longing mindset of a fellow compatriot on a bucolic journey and Sohyang's arrangement has turned into an epic saga that speaks to the historical turmoils of the nation and the coalescing desire for peace and unification among the Korean people. Love the comment about how Sohyang's singing invites the audience into the community. It's so fitting considering the symbolism of "Arirang Alone". It's enlightening to listen to your comment on enrolling the audience's response as part of the stage experience and how it's different from filming. Thanks for the reaction.

This is 'Arirang Alone' rather than 'Arirang'. Its based on the folk song but came out in the 90's.
The songwriter’s parents had to leave two sons and a daughter in North Korea during the war. His father’s dying wish to him was “when Korea reunite, go find your older brothers and sister and tell them that their parents did not abandoned them”.
Where everyone in the audience sings along is where Sohyang incorporated the original Arirang lyric and melody.

'Arirang' is a group of folk songs in Korea. They all differ in melody, context and mood region to region apart from the fact they share the word 'Arirang' in the chorus.
The word 'Arirang' can mean nothing and everything, and has to be interpreted in the given song's context (it's a bit like the word 'Oom-Pah-Pah' in the musical 'Oliver!').
The most famous version of Arirang is from Seoul region, and it became the favourite of the nation in the 20's when it was sung in then a hit film of the same title. Its soulful simple tune lended itself to be sung in both joyous and sad occasion and with different lyrics. The song went wherever Koreans went during the colonial time - whether as hard labourers to Pacific islands or so-called 'comfort women' to Southeast Asia. The local natives who contacted these Koreans, who were dislocated forcefully by the Imperial Japan, still remember the tune of Arirang after half a century.
Now, 'Arirang Alone' is a modern variation of this famous folk tune. It assums a lone voice wishing for the reunification of North/South Korea (hence Arirang 'Alone'), picturing the image of a sea journey from Halla-mountain in the South to Baektu-mountain in the North. The journey is going to be rough (and in this context, 'Arigang Hill' represents the obstacle to overcome), and may be forced to break down occasionally... but the lone voice still encourages to carry on and others to join in hand-in-hand.
In this Sohyang arrangement, she turned the simple ditty to a full blown journey - starting off as a somewhat naive, childlike lone voice hoping for the journey to reunification. It soon meets the rough sea and obstacles as represented by the dramatic transition, but, as Korea's modern history proves, she wouldn't give up the spirit and carry on with renewed energy. When the song reaches the chorus of the famous folk tune, which literally every Korean knows, she encourages the audience to join in, symbolically to join in, hand-in-hand, to this journey to reunion. But at the end, she comes back as the lone voice, now somewhat more melancholic because indeed the journey to reunification is still far and rough... but as the closing line says ('We're going over Arirang Hill'), she wouldn't let go of the hope.
With this historic and cultural context, one would be able to understand better why this Sohyang rendition of 'Arirang Alone' struck the heart of Korean public.

Hi, thanks for your heartfelt reaction. As a Korean, let me tell you what emotion Arirang brings up to me. It is name of an imaginary hill, which evokes a mixture or conglromerate of such emotions as love, sadness, yearning and hope. It's something like you feel when one you love, say mother, brother, sister or lover, whoever he or she may be, went on a journey, fading out over the yonder hill. Now, sometimes looking at the hill, you miss him or her with yearning for reunite. But the reality is hard on you and wouldn't let you go for it. Still, you never lose the hope that you will be reunited someday, even though you don't know when it will be. That's Arirang.

New to your channel (came over to this video after your Taemin Criminal reaction) and I love your breakdowns! Not saying you should react to this, but I think you would enjoy the show Take 1 on Netflix! Each episode follows a different well known Korean musician as they prepare for and eventually put on a one take performance to end all performances. It is very fascinating to watch their processes. The AKMU (amazing brother sister duo) episode in particular was wild and extravagant

Even on the map, it is clear that Korea has suffered invasions and hardships from many powerful nations throughout its over 5,000-year history..
In the process, many people created ‘Arirang’ in the form of folk songs, expressing the sorrow they experienced while overcoming those adversities. Such emotions are referred to as ‘Han’ in Korea. It’s a kind of Korean soul, you could say..
Because of this ‘Han,’ Koreans have a heart to help those who are in difficult situations and going through tough times. This is called ‘Jeong.’

Three more of her songs to listen to...
    - "Lean on me" Gospel, Michael Bolton's arrangement with Michael Bolton in the audience
    - "Misty" th-cam.com/video/_ivvpK3UMlw/w-d-xo.html a quiet song about being in love, with plenty of interval jumps, all absolutely precise while she tells the story.
    - "Day Day" th-cam.com/video/bBQwhC_LLek/w-d-xo.html not a solo, some almost rap parts.

Please learn how to properly pronounce this amazing singer's name. It's pronounced So Young....and you really should listen to her version of "Misty" as performed in the "Begin Again Korea" show. It's only her with a single instrument and it's so moving it brings one of the other singers to tears.
