I'm so grateful to the internet and technology, otherwise I would have never heard these dhamma talks. These talks are literally saving my life from the dark place that I was in before. Thank you so much Ajahn Brahmali and the Buddhist Society of Victoria; and I couldn't agree more with the quote at the end of this talk "The gift of dhamma excels all other gifts".
I started mindfulness practise after hearing Ajahn Brahms talks without knowing much about Buddhism. Followed by intensive Vipassana Retreats. There the emphasis is not actually on virtue, but it touches on the theme of course. And I found, virtue and generosity come naturally with the practice. So in my experience its the other way around. It might work in both ways of course. But I always found the mindfulness training the main job we have to do.
I think when it comes to parents and their help towards us has to do more with kamma at a root level than with what we can easily observe. Technically they gave you life and the opportunity to live. They were your bridge into this world. That can be percieved as having gave a lot already. Maybe they then saw after you for a nit and gave you up for adoption. They then saw after you for a short period of time. Maybe they abused you out the gate of life and made a lot of suffering for you, you can at least say that they helped give you life and the opportunity to practice the spiritual path in this world. I have issues with my parents, too but what i realize is that a lot of anger and negagive states that i hold towards them that are brought up constantly, only prevent me from growing spiritually. I believe whether we like to admit or not, parents are thrust upon us on a sort of pedastol and i believe we have to relate to them positively or negatively which will greatly impact our state of mind since i belive our parents are sort of forced to be important to us as a part of nature.
Your talk sounds so naive to me. It doesnt say one moment what is the right view what is the wrong view. For instance, look after your parents because they did all these good things for you...! Did they really ..? And if someone doesnt look after their parents, does that person suffer. Does the parent suffer who isnt looked after even this parent might have done all the right things. Most likely. Does it help the right view? I can''t see that. And about giving, giving might give me a pleasant feeling but does it avoid possible suffering for the receiver? For the right way of giving i would need to know what is a really good helpful thing to give to the other... but i don't know. And even if we would know would it avoid suffering? I love my life and i have suffered a lot through my life and i still do. I can't see how to avoid suffering especially for people who try their best to do the "right" thing to others and themselves. Do i have to stop loving life? Do people who cause severe suffering to others, do they really suffer? I can't see that and it doesnt give any comfort to think, that for instance a tyrant might have to suffer in their next life?! Any, what do i know? I know that i know nothing. However, big big thank you to make this effort to give help and advice to ease suffering. Didnt work for me, makes me more sad.
