TH-cam's Biggest MCM Challenge Playlist - • TH-cam's Biggest MCM ...
This is a link to the playlist with all of our videos in one place - grab a coffee, tea, or a bourbon, sit back and watch every one of these talented artists.
This week I have the honor of participating with some of the greatest furniture restoration artists in the world in TH-cam's Biggest Mid-Century Modern Challenge. We were challenged with taking something ragged and creating a beautiful MCM styled piece using our own individual techniques and talents.
I did not have a MCM piece to work on so I made my own from a dresser I have had since I was a child. It is from the same time period but it is not considered a mid-century modern style. In this video, I changed all that!

Leave it as is. You did a beautiful job. Keep this piece as a legacy to your mother. Your childhood self would be very impressed.
Thank you so much!
I agree!
@@elisabethhandel You are very kind. Thank you!
+1 for leaving it as is.
Same here...
Leave the inlay as is. I had no idea what your vision was. What a surprise after all that white paint removal. The veneer you chose has a beautiful pattern. The legs you made are so graceful and elegant. I love the hardware too. All in all it's a fantastic transformation.
That is so very kind of you to write. Thank you!
My favorite things about this chest of drawers is the band at the bottom, the new legs, and the new pulls. That the band was a secret all this time is so intriguing. Keep it this way!
I was super surprised to find it here. Never knew about it. Looks like it is staying as is! Thanks!!
Okaaaaay Matt this was labor intensive fo sho. I love the way you presented it. Don’t change a thing. I graduated in ‘83 lol. So far I’ve watched Jay, David, Dasher and ATRestoration all this afternoon. Great way to enjoy the Sunday. Love all the dogs and kitty that visit you
So far I've watched all but 4 of the restorations. I've enjoyed each one. Each video has something special. I agree with @jodidavis6595. It's been a great way to spend Sunday afternoon and evening. Your work is superb!
The cat and dog must be quality control! 😂 But what is wrong with the cat's forepaw. He/She is limping. I hope it's something that will get better soon! Again, AMAZING WORK! ❤😊👍🧑🔧🐱🐶🐕🐈⬛
🤩🙏
Yeah this one took a minute to get finished. Thanks for the great comment. I am happy that you are getting a chance to check out all of the great creators that took part in this challenge. There are some super creative folks here. See you in the next one!
@@kimderrick7796 The cat is okay. He was attacked by something over 10 years ago when he was a kitten but other than a limp and being a pain in the butt sometimes, he is okay.
I was just thinking to myself:”Is it really a proper restoration, if there are no cats or dogs milling about somewhere?” I guess not.😊
Oh, my gosh... OH, MY GOSH... talk about turning a sow's ear into a silk purse! This is gorgeous, better than new, ya done good Dude 👍
Thank you so much! Happy to get such great feedback. Thanks! ✌🏽
I think that what makes me smile most, besides seeing alllll of my favorites in one place enjoying a little friendly competition... is the many MANY ways everyone weighs down their glue. LOL Bricks, wood, dumb bells, 987 clamps, pieces from other projects... just make me laugh! So many great pieces!
Gotta go with what you got? Am I right? So happy that you are enjoying the challenge and watching your favorite creators. Stay tuned after this because we are already planning the next one!! 🌻
Yes, me too. Chuckled when he panned to show all those bricks lined up. Use what you got.
@@LeonaLinscott-cy6dz You know it!
Beautiful! ❤❤❤
WOW!! That was a mammoth amount of labour, effort and talent. I really enjoyed watching this, you are very good at telling a story without saying anything. This dresser got an insane makeover and the fact that it was from your childhood gave it a really nice personal touch. I love that you wrote the current year on it, perfect ending. Congratulations on such an awesome result.
Thanks Cole! I appreciate the great feedback. I debated about adding the current year on the back but I am glad I did it. I can't paint worth a crap so it looks like 12 year old me did that one too. I'll be heading over to your channel shortly to check out your entry in the Challenge!! See you in the next one! 🍻
+
What a labor of love: taking a childhood piece and re-imagining it. So much craftsmanship went into this. My favorite part: when you painted the year in matching big numbers in the back!! Yes!!
Thanks!! A lot of people didn't like that part. Thought I should have sanded the back to look new.
That would have erased it's history. Maybe there's a way to put the history of the piece somewhere inside of this chest for future reference to it's history.
@@judithburke1539 I love it the way it is. I probably won't be making any further changes!
I laughed out loud when you were struggling to get the drawers out at the beginning. No one would have blamed you if you hauled the dresser out to the curb mid-Project but you persevered and it turned out wonderful. I think the dresser is perfect as is. Great transformation.
Très belle
Thank you! I appreciate the great feedback.
Thank you for putting legs on that piece!!! You've taken it from sentimental trash to absolute treasure ❤
I hope so. Thanks for the very nice comment. 🤗
I don't see another thing to do here. It turned out just beautiful! You did far more work than I would even imagine, its gorgeous!
Thanks so much 😊
Oh my goodness!!! It's gorgeous just the way it is.
Thank you! Most people agree with you I believe.
Matt leave it the way it is! What a wonderful design! Great work!
Thanks! I believe that most people agree with you so far so it might be staying as is.
Matt I was at first disappointed that you couldn’t stain the wood, but in the end with the veneer stained and new hardware it came out priceless. What a beautiful dresser you have refurbished!!!😊
I wish I could have saved the old veneer but it was way too far gone. It had actually shrunk and wasn't covering the entire piece anymore. I've never seen that. Thanks for the great feedback! 🙂
Love that there’s no music. Just the sounds of woodworking. Beautiful job.
Thank you very much!
It's not often I'm surprised in furniture remakes. This one surprised me twice. The hardware, especially the top pulls, was unexpectedly PERFECTION. And those legs.. I love them so much I would have left them lighter than the cabinet just so everyone noticed how downright elegant they are. ❤
Thank you for the very kind words!! Someone suggested that I begin making them for sale. What do you think? 🤔
@@Restorology I think there's some profit to be made, considering the continued demand for MCM and the quality of your work.
I love the legs!!! Amazing!!
All the hard work that went into that! The legs are beautiful in their
simplicity, even though a lot of work was required to make them. Outstanding.!
@@geofffikar3417 Thank you!
Looks like this is the last time this piece will see the work table. What a stunning transformation.
Given my skill set, it'll probably fall apart in six months. Thanks!!
I doubt that seriously@@Restorology
I love the detail at the bottom. The lightness of it really ties in the handles.
I said the same thing!! Thanks!!
OMG! What a labor of love! That literally made me cry 😢 I lost my childhood bedroom set in my 20’s & it still makes me sad. That was a huge undertaking, but I can only imagine the pride you feel right now. Kudos to you for keeping it all these years & applying your skill set to bring to a more beautiful state than it was ever in! I’m in awe ❤❤❤
Thank you for the very kind words. I am happy to know that you were moved by it. This piece has been in storage for 30+ years and I've always meant to get it out and clean it up. This challenge gave me a great excuse to do so. I am grateful for that. I hope to see you in the next one. 🌸
@@Restorology You have a new subscriber ☺️
WOW! Fantastic transformation.
Thank you!
It’s gorgeous! I love the legs. Congratulations and hope you had as much fun working on the dresser as I had watching your video. 😊
Thanks!! It was a lot of fun. I am happy that I finally found a use for this old dresser. It sat in storage for way too long. 🙄
Beautifully done! Leave it the way it is.
Thanks for weighing in!! I think most agree with you.
Awesome job Matt! Love the colours and the legs! The hardware is spot on 🤩
Loved your red brick ugly piece. Turned out gorgeous. 😍
@@jodidavis6595 thank you 🙏
Well Jay, you have to admit, if there was a prize to be awarded, this would definitely be the winner. The fact that he’s hung onto it all these years & the sheer amount of work it took to make it look better than it did when it was new is awe inspiring! I cried at the end 😢
🙂@@earthcandleco
Thanks! And thanks for facilitating the challenge. It's been a blast getting to know all y'all. 🤗
That is so pretty! I would do nothing else as it's just perfect as it is.
Most people agree with you so I think it might be staying as is. Thanks for the feedback!!
Leave it as it is now. It is beautiful!
Thanks!! Many people agree with you so it might be staying this way.
A couple of times I thought you’d lost your mind until I saw where you were going! Brilliant. Amazing transformation!! Such a gift to watch! I loved the trained going by and them coming back in the other direction! I also liked your reading a book while sanding forever! Talented craftsmanship!
Thanks so much! 😊 I am very happy that you enjoyed watching this. 🌻
And the phoenix rises from the ashes! Amazing transformation. Well done!
It turned out better than I though it would for sure. Thanks!
That was the most remarkable, time consuming restorations I’ve seen on TH-cam in a long time. It is absolutely gorgeous.
Thank you very much! I am super pleased of the end result. I wasn't sure about it when I began. 🍀
Your work drops sick beats every single time the transition changes. Birds, trains, beat drops with scraping, all of it. I'm here for it 💁♀️
You are the bomb. Does this mean I'll see you again at the next video? 🍀
@@Restorology absolutely!
Ohhhhh! This is beautiful! Oh and so much work!! OMG! Wonderful job Matt. A piece of furniture to be treasured for sure. 😍
Thanks so much! So happy that you like it. 🌻
Love very much that you get to keep using your childhood dresser as an adult, and going by the how stuck the drawers were, using it at all for the first time in a very long while. Also glad you added to your signature, instead of removing the old one.
Hi. Thanks! This sat in storage for over 30 years in the heat and cold. I wasn't surprised to see the drawers swelled shut. Didn't take much to get them back in working order though so all is well!
Wow! I came from another “challenge” channel. I have watched 4, you and Flipping Drawers are head to head. Your is more labor intensive than any, so far! Great job you are all inspirations!
Hey. Thanks for watching everyone's projects. We all worked really hard to bring the viewers this challenge. I am super envious of Flipping Drawers new desk. I don't think that I would have had the vision to bring that one to life. 🌻
That has turned out amazing and now should last another 40 years
Let's hope so! Thanks!
What a transformation! Leave the band at the bottom but I suggest staining the light strip at the top and bottom the same cherry as the rest of the piece. The long horizontal drawer pulls work really well, and although I like the circular pulls at the top their shape only references the shape of the legs. I think a shorter version of the big pulls would work better. Even better yet would be ones that are square that echo the squares in the bottom band. Nonetheless, you've done a remarkably successful alteration of 60s dresser and brought it into the 21st Century.
Thank you for the well thought out feedback!! I actually considered shorter versions of the straight pulls but decided on adding some contrast. I am glad I did. Thanks!!
I love it just the way it is. It is beautiful. Having been born in the mid-century era, 1948, I am in love with the style. Those legs are perfection. The pulls are wonderful. The cat t-shirt was a bonus!
Thanks! You are the only one to mention the t-shirt so far!
The new legs are gorgeous, the veneer is beautiful, and it's a good idea to save the original trim at the bottom front --a beautiful rebirth!
Thank you! 😊
You are true carpenter in every sense. The way you enjoy your work, the way you work with bare hands and using hand tools, all depicts your love for the craft. It was such a beautiful restoration. You transformed it into a pure joy. And the highlight was Legs, omg it added the whole new dimension to the table, quite asthetically made. Also, your attention to detail to almost everything was spot on. Loved the sound of train in and howling in the background… Bravo!
Thank you so much for the very kind words! It makes me happy knowing that you enjoyed watching this project. Don't forget to check out all of the other creators in the challenge. Everybody did a great job. Cheers 🍻
Don't change a thing. It really demonstrates your talents in design and execution. I believe that is one of the nicest pieces of furniture I've seen in this contest, and I've watched almost all of them. I think I have one left.
Everyone in the challenge did a wonderful job. I'm grateful to be included with this crew. Thanks!!
Came for the MCM challenge and subscribed in the first 3 minutes. Love your style! Look forward to bingeing on your videos in the near future! ❤
@@GabbyPaynter Thank you very much and welcome to the channel!! I am very happy that you are here. 🌻
you did sooo much hard labor than the others i've seen so for. Beautiful work❤
I don't know about that...they just know what they are doing and make it look easier!! Thanks! 😃
It's magnificent, leave it as it is in Memory of your Mum and your childhood. You'll never regret it.
Thanks!! I will most likely leave it as is!
Loved when you said, YES, the other drawer pieces were discovered. lol
It was a good find...less work for me!
To think that this treasure sat in our home all those years! Who knew? You certainly brought it to life! Great job!
Thanks mom. 🌷
Those legs are genius! The inlaid detail is a definite plus......might I say you work your butt off to turn this diamond in the rough into a sparkling gem! Hats off my man!
Thank you. It is one of my favorite pieces now!
OMG. It's amazing, and those legs are simply awesome. And the lovely little detail on the bottom. So beautiful!!
Thank you so much!
The drawers in the dresser were certainly a tight fit. A very nice transformation and those legs are perfect.
Thank you! 😊
It is BEAUTIFUL as it is. Bee wax goes so well with memories because of the smell. Great job thank you for sharing
Thanks for the kind words. I am a big fan of beeswax now. I love the look and feel of it.
Multitasking!!! Reading a book while scraping! Art pure Art 💕
The essence of all beautiful art, all great art, is gratitude. Thank you! 🙏🏽✌🏽
BEAUTIFUL 🎉
Thank you! 😊
A little warped? Those drawers nearly required Hercules to get them out. 😂 As usual you’ve done a lovely job. I love the legs and the decorative edge at the bottom. They give the piece a nice punch. Well done. 👏👏👏👏👏👏
Thank you so very much! The drawers were pretty cozy where they were. They did not want to come out! 🍀
Opening the door and hearing you say yess. 😂 'I found things that are useful! The legs you created were wonderful! I love how the cherry makes this piece look warm and rich. It's old meets new - spectacular!
Thanks Emily. I was excited to find those parts. I couldn't remember what had happened to them. It had been like 15 years since I last moved the dresser. It's been fun getting to know you through the challenge. See you in the next one!!
Wow! Beautiful!
Thank you! 😊
Oh my gosh, you are a total artist, designer, and craftsman! This is my 11th in the MCM challenge, and by far my most favorite. It is absolutely stunning, and a complete transformation. I especially love the hardware you used, and the amazing legs you created. And if all that was not enough, you have dogs, cats, trains, and even the moon! And clearly, a wonderful sense of humor. Subscribed!
Thank you so very much and welcome to the channel!! I am so glad you are here.
Man do you ever have strong hands! I sweated all through this incredible restoration. Even though I don’t have the tools, literally or physically, I learned a lot that I can apply to the small refinishing jobs I do for myself. Thank you.
Thank you for the very kind comment and good luck on your projects!
Leave it. This is a beautiful restoration of an item from your childhood. Awesome job!!!
Thank you very much!
Комод чудесный. Чтобы ваши руки не болели.😊
Please leave the piece as it is now. It's perfect. I watched all the projects for the challenge and yours is my favorite. Thank you.
Thank you so much! There is some great talent in the challenge. I learn something watching all of them.
Wow! Definitely a labor of love. That dresser found great fortune when it found your mom & you. There are so many brilliant projects in this challenge. For your determination, perserverance, & redesign of a piece that most would have trashed or salvaged, I'd have to give you the blue ribbon. Its not my favorite piece, but your effort showcases the best of values in the current furniture rehab movement.
That is very kind of you to write. Thank you for the thoughtful message!
It's perfect as it is. Beautiful transformation. Looks like cherry wood.
Thank you! I used cherry veneer so you are correct! 💯🙂
My first time watching and I am enjoying it immensely.😊
Thank you and welcome to the channel! 🌻
This video makes me smile and feel nostalgic for you.
The dresser turned out beautifully... no doubt about that.
When you painted 2024 on the back I almost cried!
Thanks again for the excellent content!
Thank you so much for the continued support!! See you in the next one! 🌷
@@Restorology See you then, buddy! 👍
That was a really, really impressive transformation. Very attractive new dresser.
Thank you! 😊
Not everyone gets a second chance to work on a project such as this like you did. The outcome is amazing, and you read my mind when you brushed '2024' next to your original "signature" date! May you continue to enjoy this beautiful piece for many more years to come!😇
Thanks!! I knew that the 2024 was going on before I even scraped off the first paint. Too bad it looks like a 12 year old painted it again.
All I can say is wow, wow, WOW. Beautiful work!
That is very kind of you. Thank you. 😊
As I started watching this video, I was charmed by your antics with the drawers not coming out. But, when you sneezed, I subscribed! I’m just learning furniture restoration and I’m a sneezer too! I don’t know which is worse, sawdust or pollen!! Thanks to Flipping Drawers highlighting all the entrants to the MCM Challenge.
Thanks for the thoughtful message. Sneeze season is upon us hard here. I cut 99% of them out! Thanks for subbing and welcome to the channel!! I am so glad you are here. 🌺
Amazing work of love. Enjoyed seeing your cat crawling of the cabinet when you were working on it.
Thank you! 😊
Awesome restoration. All that hard work paid off. Those legs were so MCM. I hardly believe my eyes
Thank you very much!
Nice transition into a big boy dresser. Lol. It's stunning!
Thank you! 😊
Flipping Drawers introduced me to this channel through this challenge..wow great piece
Thank you and welcome to the channel! I am so very glad that you are here now!!
My vote is leave it. It was a nice surprise find, let it shine. The legs were a great design, very elegant. Your mum would be proud. :)
Thanks for the input! It will probably be staying!

Absolutely beautiful..... I can't believe how gorgeous it turned out!!!❤😊
Thank you so much! It turned out much better than I thought it would. 🍀
Have not seen a wooden t-ruler since I left school many moons ago. Took me back to!
This one is dated 1920s but I honestly have no idea how I got it. I've just had it forever. It is still perfectly angled. ⦜
Have to say appreciated the way ya got the drawers out got a chuckle and smiled watching but love the piece
Got to do what you got to do sometimes. Thanks!!
Leave the dental trim - this is a one of a kind piece and the trim shows the history of this piece, I love it just as it is. Great work!
I am fairly certain that it will be staying now. Thanks for the input!!
Just the right amount of humor. You rock
Thanks!! 🤟🏽
Holy Cow! You did so much work on this piece! Looks awesome.
Thanks a bunch!
When you added the "2024" I freely admit I got a little emotional. Beautiful work. It may have been a child's dresser, but you brought it through time to be your companion again today.
I'm gonna go cry now
Thank you for the very kind words. I am grateful that this challenge gave me a chance to use this dresser once again. 🌷
WOW what a transformation! I can’t believe how completely changed this piece was from when you started working on it to when it was completed. Love you kept the inlay in one piece and didn’t veneer over it. It makes the piece that and the legs what beautiful legs! So beautiful it is really quite spectacular!
Thank you for the thoughtful message. I am very happy to know that you enjoyed this project. Stay tuned...with luck a new one might be posted in the morning! 🍀

This turned out beautifully. I really had no idea of all the work that goes into making a piece of furniture. This project was a lot of work but totally worth it!
Thank you so much! It is one of my favorite pieces now!
I just found you and oh what a remarkable find! I usually don't leave comments but you are truly exceptional! This dresser is a total makeover. There is nothing showing of the old - a total makeover! SO SO SO much work! Thank you - a joy to watch!
Thank you so much! Yes I was going for a total makeover which is not my usual content but fun to do for the mid-century modern challenge. It gave me a chance to reuse this old dresser. I probably would not have restored it otherwise. 🍀
Love the bottom bar, that is gorgeous and really makes the entire piece stand out!! Beautiful!!

This is my favorite from the mcm challenge just from watching the struggle with removing the drawers. All the hard work paid off. Really nice restoration.
