Hanukkah & Jesus: The MYSTERY of Light Revealed! | Dreidel | Rabbi Jason Sobel

  • Everybody loves a good origin story, and in this episode, Rabbi Jason Sobel describes Chanukah's origin (Hanukkah). We can sum up the essence of this Jewish holiday in two words: fighting and lighting. This celebration restores our hope, faith, and trust that our God is true to His word!
The light of Chanukah points to the light of Yeshua-Jesus the Messiah. Yeshua's light lives in you. You are the light. Have Courage and be strengthened, He is with you!
Did you know that while Jesus never celebrated Christmas, He did celebrate Chanukah? Did you know that every significant event in Jesus’ life occurred on a Jewish holiday? Perhaps it would be helpful for us to think of these holidays not so much as Jewish, but God’s. These are God’s appointed times and, consequently, are relevant to all of God’s people. An examination of the origins of Chanukah will build your faith and spark a light in your soul that will shine brightly in a darkened world.

I was not born Jewish. But at 19 I discovered the Hebrew feast days of the Bible. I am now 74!! (same age as Israel)
My wife and I kept all the feasts for over 40 years and taught our children and grandchildren to do the same! Hallelujah!
    Erich from New Zealand.

Beautiful tradition and yes, all the emotions attached to 74 yrs (same age of Israel) are only what it is: emotional for you in what you experience. However, nothing of this is part of the New Test which starts with Acts 2, the outpouring of the Holy Spirit.
Jesus in Mark 7:13.. 'making the word of God of no effect through your tradition which you have handed down. And many such things you do'.
All feasts already have come into fulfilling, accept the feast of Tabernacles which are us, our bodies as Rev 21:3 have it.
      Revelation 21:3
And I heard a loud voice from heaven saying, “Behold, the tabernacle of God is with men, and He will dwell with them, and they shall be His people. God Himself will be with them and be their God.

Baruch HaShem! I have been learning about the amazing blessings in celebrating the feasts as a Christian woman, MANY OF WHICH GOD HAS COMMANDED US TO DO PERPETUALLY. Jesus, Yeshua, celebrated these feasts and HE is our Savior! He is the fulfillment of these feasts!
Jesus taught from the Law and the Prophets (aka the Old Testament or properly, the Tanakh).
For too long, political arms of religious organizations have pulled the word of God apart.
There are not 2 parts to the Bible, it is One Word. Jesus says in Matthew 5:17-19 :
“Do not think that I came to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I did not come to abolish but to fulfill. “For truly I say to you, until heaven and earth pass away, not the smallest letter or stroke shall pass from the Law until all is accomplished. “Whoever then annuls one of the least of these commandments, and teaches others to do the same, shall be called least in the kingdom of heaven; but whoever keeps and teaches them, he shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven."
...He said "until heaven and earth pass away", He did not say "until I'm crucified, dead, buried, and risen". There is a wealth of information in the Tanakh.
Please do not make the mistake of thinking the "Old " Testament is done away with....

@@bbinger8343 My dear sister, concerning the celebrating of the feasts you referred to.. where in the NT does it say that God has commanded us to do perpetually 🤔 Do you not realize that the Bible, specific the OT, was written for the people of Israel, never to the gentiles? Even the gospels were for them, as God's plan was to reach the world thru His 'chosen one's, the apple of His eye', but we know from Acts that His plan failed due to the unbelieve & disobedience of those people. Acts 13:46-52
John 1:17 For the law was given through Moses, but grace & truth came through Jesus Christ.
You cannot with the one foot be in the OT/the law and with the other in the New. You either are living under the grace of God in knowing what the Father has done fór and ín us by giving His only beloved Son, or you are under tha law. Gal 3
ALL do's (work) or 'try to be', has come into fulfilling in Christ. We can only believe to receive.
Our blessings are not in 'celebrating any feasts', as that season/era has come into an end in Christ. As you correctly said, 'He is the fulfillment of the these feasts!' Our blessings are in Christ, as 'we no longer love, but Christ is living in and thru us'. Gal 2:20
Eph 1:3-6 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed US with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places in Christ.. (ín Christ!).
Yes, we all know that Jesus is our Savior, but what was his message when started his preaching? The kingdom of God!
Matt 3:2.. and saying, “Repent*, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand!”. And what is His kingdom?
Romans 14:17.. 'for the kingdom of God is not eating and drinking, but righteousness, peace and joy in the Holy Spirit'. And this kingdom is within us! Luke 17:21
*REPENT simply means to change the way you think about who Gód is and us. It also means to agree with the words in the New Cov starting with Acts 2, the outpouring of the Holy Spirit. (Jesus was born under the law, still OT).
Rom 10:4 For Christ is THE END of the law for righteousness* to everyone who believes. (*as if we've never sinned).
As you correctly quoted in Matt 5:17 'Do not think that I came to destroy the law or the prophets. I did not come to destroy but to FULFILL'.
The teachings of Jesus in Matt 5-7 were specifical to the people of Israel, as He has come to his own, but his own did not recognized him. John 1:11
The Old Test indeéd has been done away with, as it was a shadow on what was to come!
Hebr 8:7,8,13 For if that first covenant had been faultless, then no place would have been sought for a second. [8]Because finding fault with them, He says: “Behold, the days are coming, says the Lord, when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and with the house of Judah- [13]In that He says, “A new covenant ,” He has made the first obsolete. Now what is becoming obsolete and growing old is ready to vanish away.
Hebrews 10:9 'then He said, “Behold, I have come to do Your will, O God.” He takes away the first that He may establish the second'.
Celebrate the old if you want to my dear, just keep in mind the Christ-life is our true celebration. Blessings!

SHALOM, SHALOM. WE PRAISE ALMIGHTY GOD for sending JESUS CHRIST into the World; John 3:16.
Thank you Rabbi Sobel for the great teachings that you present. Amen.
Excellent! We are to keep GOD's Feasts whether Jew or Gentile. We honor ALMIGHTY GOD when we do things HIS Way. PRAYERFULLY Read the Scriptures enclosed and KNOW: Exodus 12: 48; Leviticus 23: 4 to 14 ("it shall be a statute FOREVER); Jesus kept PASSOVER (also called Communion) and we Christians can observe Passover wherein Jesus explained that HE Is The Lamb of GOD when HE observed the feast at Passover (called "the Last Supper") with HIS Disciples. This is when we acknowledge Jesus shed HIS Blood for our Sins, and Healing, and Deliverance.
If we obey ALMIGHTY GOD we will keep His Commandments. Easter Bunnies and Santa Claus have NOTHING to do with GOD. The Biblical New Year is Rosh Hashanah year 5783 (we are to observe the same) not the Roman-Gregorian Calendar (2022) as the world observes. It is believed that JESUS CHRIST was born in September. Some theologians state that Hanukkah, the annual Feast of Dedication of the Temple observed in what we call December actually started 168-years before when it is believed to also be when The Virgin Mary first learned that she would carry The LORD JESUS CHRIST and at that moment, LIGHT came into the World.
The Real Birthday of Jesus Christ - September 11. : conspiracy (reddit.com) www.reddit.com/r/conspiracy/comments/gbmrga/the_real_birthday_of_jesus_christ_september_11/
Therefore, the Birth of Our LORD and Savior JESUS CHRIST may have been in September at the start of the Hebrew New Year Rosh Hashanah ( Rosh Hashanah - Wikipedia ).
Read: SEPTEMBER 11-THE TRUE DATE OF JESUS' BIRTH? - Intercessors for America (ifapray.org)
STUDY THE SCRIPTURES, not the traditions of men. JESUS CHRIST, Yeshua Hamaschiach, will be here soon to take Home His Bride, the Children of Obedience. SHALOM

Israel and Jerusalem especially is life changing, every christian should go. Everywhere I went the Holy Spirit revealed Jesus to me and my heart cried for Israel. Jerusalem is the Eternal City and you can feel it when you are there. Beautiful story about your family and their father who lit the Menorah for Hanukkah despite the nazis coming to the train ...hearing how the Lord saved them is remarkable and encouraging. We all need to share such things , even to build the faith of ourselves when we may be struggling looking for a reason to keep going onward, if we know the Lord intervened on our behalf somehow. If He did it for somebody else we can hope he will somehow hear our calls even the silent prayers of desperation when we can’t get words out Thanks for sharing. Wow, what an amazing LORD

I grew up Roman Catholic. Then few years ago I converted to non denominational Bible based Christianity. Just recently, I learned that I have Jewish Heritage from my father’s side. I’ve decided to embrace my Jewish roots along with my Christian faith. I would not mind being messianic christian and I’m very happy to celebrate Hanukkah. I wish I knew all of this growing up. My dad didn’t know either. His father was a Protestant and I believe he hid his Jewish ancestry because he was fighting WWII against the Nazi and fought in Normandy. We are all just finding ourselves who we are. Good stuff Rabbi Jason!

I grew up Roman Catholic. And like most Roman Catholics I didn't read the Bible. But I started listening to prophets on TH-cam , Jonathan Cahn said something that stuck with me. Christian holidays are made by man, but Jewish holidays were given to man by God. So if you really want to celebrate the light and love of God, it's the Jewish holidays we all should be celebrating.
I'm not finished with my first Bible read through. I'm only at the end of Isaiah. But reading it brings you closer to God everyday, because you receive a message from Him through most everything you read. Thank you for explaining about Hanukkah, and the difference in the candelabras. You cleared up alot.

The Bible tells us of many celebrations and there is nothing wrong with it if, it is celebrated with the right perspective.

It’s possible to do both. Most of the Jewish “legalistic” laws were in place because man was still under Law in the old covenant coz of the fall. Most of those laws were fulfilled much like Jesus said he was the Lord of the Sabbath and he healed on the sabbath. We’re under a new covenant because of that. They aren’t obligatory to us anymore but like the Rabbi said help us truly understand the gospel more for sure.
There’s nothing wrong with honoring the day our savior was born nor the day he resurrected and restored us to the Father. So like I said, we can do both. Much like I’m beginning to with the Jewish ones.
It’s worth noting though that Jesus did things per Jewish custom. It’s worth remembering which ones were fulfilled and which are immutable.

"Not by power nor by might but by my Spirit says the Lord of hosts." How do we receive God the Holy Spirit in us? Believe in Jesus Christ as our Lord and Savior. This requires that His word is believed. The Bible is the means to find His word. HE IS THE WORD. Not by any weapon can one acquire it. The WORD is the truth. The WORD was in the beginning! It was GOD. John 1:1 and more after this. The true sword is THE WORD. The Holy Spirit brings the word and applies it to the lost world. The Word IS Jesus Christ AKA God.

As a Christian I celebrate Hannakah/Festival of Lights and I want to share with you all some of the things(and there's more) of what God showed about the Menorah: we light it from left to right...., before we asked Christ into our lives, we were ALL on the left...but once saved we are now going from glory to glory through sanctification and end on the right side when Shamesh (Jesus) Lights the last candle on the right, another thought is there were 8 people on the ark, alleluia and MOST IMPORTANTLY THE MENORAH represents to me, our salvation, our sanctification, and our great commission!!!! WE ARE TO SHARE GODS LOVE AND LIGHT with a dark world, alleluia...what say you Rabbi!!??

    YES! YES! YES! Wonderful!
Yeshua HaMashiach never observed Christmas, a pagan tradition.
It's refreshing to hear a Rabbi speak the truth. Instead, Jesus celebrated Hanukkah. We should dedicate our life to God and follow His call for goodness. The focus should be on walking in victory, not succumbing to the desperation of Christmas shopping.
Thank you Rabbi for the fantastic story of true faith and hope !
