I wouldn't want that look on my whole car anyway. I think it looks better when highlighting details, trim, emblems or possibly even rhe wheels. I have used similar flakes on normal rattle can paint before, painting a pair of subwoofer baskets for my diy subs. And it looks awesome. So for smaller stuff, i'd definitely use it. And I am thinking of trying spectra flakes on the centerpiece of my 3piece wheels as well.

I did a car I had put 8 coats of micro flakes. And took little over 6 gallons of clear. It was super super wet you can see it wet from a block away. And the flakes looked like they just moved by them self's paint looked alive. There's different ways on how to shoot flake use different angles and shoot flake not to close bit far .and clear over it then flake clear. Until as many as you want then start shooting just clear. You'll see big difference in the way flake looks. Those are secrets on how to shoot flake.
A quick note to Fonzie. your dedication to your business is great and I love the fact that you won't sell of recommend a particular product that can be problematic however there is something you may not be aware of with flake paints. OK first off let's start with Spray technique for those of us who have been spraying metalflake (Yes this IS rocket science, and it has to do with physics of the needles and spray patterns that ALL guns share) when a flake is sprayed the larger size if the flake causes something kind of like magic all of the flakes come out of the gun in the same orientation (the same direction) unlike metallics or pearls, this in turn places a limitation that makes a BIG difference in the texture of the finish. With metallics and pearls it is perfectly OK to spray as usual (Back and forth) BUT with a flake if you use the back and forth technique the flakes are laid down in sort of a crosshatch pattern resulting in a bumpy sandpaper like finish (just as you said in the video). However, if you spray unidirectional (in only one direction, say back to front or front to back the flakes will lay down in one direction resulting in a smoother shinier finish without all the roughness and sandpaper feel of the back and forth spray pattern (I have been spraying flakes since the Mid 70s and I have screwed up many flake paints this way. it took an old man who had been spraying flake paints since the 60s to set me straight. Flakes are just plain touchy that way. Try it out on a couple of speed shapes and see for yourself if it makes a difference I'm sure you will. An OLD auto painter.
Maybe before you put the Clear Coat on...I think you should try 2 sand it down first with a 2000 grit sand paper... it's just an idea!.. maybe it would take down all the ruff edges of the Flakes ..so when u put the clear Coat it would not feel so ruff... remember it's just an idea!!.. u should try it
A lack of a properly glossy top/clear plastidip is the reason I chose aerosols to pain my car with. It was a hell of a lot more prep and finish work, but it got me the finish I was after.

It’s nice to hear brutal honesty. I only use those micro flakes on motorcycles and dirt bikes, with even polyurethane paints it is the same trying to bury them.
I used 2k clear on a 200 micron and took 9 coats of high solid to cover and flat back. Thats using proper car paint so 3 coats of your clear aint bad, but it was not flat like a mirror
1)Can you please try this again but increased flake concentration? Like an in your face holographic layer? 2)And have you experimented with linear holographic flakes? 3)have you ever tried blowing the flakes with just low pressure air to make them lay flat or fly off? I think it would be worth a shot, maybe just on a speed shape?
Definately right! Not only that, on a larger scale metal flake can be difficult to spray. The slightest mistake can cause metal slag where the flake begins to slide. It's best to use a mid coat to lay flake on a base coat clear coat job!
Thank you for your transparent comments. I use flakes on regular custom work where you get the 'best bang for your buck, and even then it is labour intensive, flow coating loading on the extra clear equated to time and materials!!!
I wish someone could have given this advice a few years earlier..... i did this on my first ride in 2006 with aquamarine blue liquid crystals. At first it was a beauty but a few months later i had to continually buff the top layer to keep the shifting effect. Because of the same flakes issue it had to be sprayed with a minium of three layers of clear coat. In retrospect it end up being a total waste of money because the main issues with these colours is you have to paint the whole broadside or even the entire car if you happen to get a knick or small bounce or scratch. There is absolutely no touch painting with these colours. And insurance never covers the cost for such expensive paint jobs in the event of an accident....
I've seen some guys lay down some helluva ultra fine metal flake paint jobs. They all said it depends on the quality of the clear you used. You're going to use some clear coats when it comes to flakes.

Jetstorm19 dipping is still in a stage where they are trying to convince people to do it. If people use micro flake. People won’t be happy. And it’ll get bad rep. Aka good bye dip your car. It’s like pre damage control
I think you can always apply your flake or microflake, then you need to sand all the painted surface, and after that you can spry one single clear layer, as usual
they think long term, short term if they do that they can sell a lot but once customer gets a wind of its bad rep then future customers will be non existent. I respect the way he runs this.

sooo… that "first dip" I'd been planning, where I was going to have some regular pearls, some color shifting pearls, and maybe some either jet black (for contrast) or red micro flakes (for extra sparkle), all mixed together into the topcoat you're saying I should scrap that and start planning all over again?

I wonder if there's some way to make the flakes lay as flat as possible on the surface before adding top coat, so they won't stick up as much. I know some advanced paint processes work this way, and even nail polish has ways to line up flakes. Obviously PlastiDip is neither paint nor nail polish, but I'm curious now. Either way, it doesn't seem like a good idea for a whole car. Maybe wheels or accents, though, a few more layers over a small area won't cost you a huge amount of money.
Entroper Good point. Larger flake can sit more flat in a thinner clear, sprayed in thinner coats. If you dilute a clear which suspends flakes, and then spray too heavily, it will run off surfaces like water, and ruin the attempt. What I wonder is if the elastomeric characteristics of DYC topcoats can sustain distillate dilution to allow the flake to sit more flat and still retain their overall characteristics once dried. I doubt it, but I also don't know, and I think it would be an interesting experiment to have Fonz attempt it.
Small pieces like wheels and motorcycles are the best things to spray flakes on to. 4 coats of clear on small things like that don’t equate to multiple gallons extra of clear, maybe a quart.
I guess it depends on product brand being used. My paints are a very high solids. I use 3 quarts to 1 gallon of color at most for an overall. (Mixed 1:1, 2 coats full coverage) My clear takes roughly 5 liters of 3- coats for an entire paint job. (I always color sand and polish, so i like more than 2 coats used in collision repair) Not sure why you need so much material in your brand. Its either very thin paint, or very low solids.

You can just sand the part down a little bit after using the one coat that has flakes in it so you won't have to deal with having to use millions of coats to level it out.
Can you try a silver with a red flake / red pearl. I've been trying to see if there is a way to accomplish a subtle colorshift or interference with silver and red. THANKS!
I wonder if it's possible to create a mix that color-shifts from gun-metal gray to slight black, so the effect of color-shift is rather subtle, with the emphasis on gray with only black shades at the angles?
My wife and I did her scooter with Micro Flakes. We used Nordic color shift pearls and Holographic Flakes. It was our first dip project and we ran into the problem here. Granted, with a small scooter, the 3-4 coats of top coat were all 1 gallon so it wasn't too bad. There is a slight texture if you get right up on the bike, but from a few feet away its not terrible. Fonzie is there any research being done in the industry to get dip or like products to have a self leveling feature like epoxy? I know dip for the most part does level out but the ability to level like epoxy does would really decrease the DIY error. It would also help with situations like this.

I want to note as you said on a small scale its good but not on a large scale and I was thinking that would look great on my sports bike as the fairings are small in scale and there many individual small pieces. What’s your take on that? I think for sports bikes dyo paint is beyond perfect and was wondering if you would ever consider putting dyo kits together for motorcycles.
4 gallons of base coat for a car!? If I am not mistaken, that's 16 litres of base coat (converted from US gallons) and I know that painting a car requires about 3 - 7 litres...Have I missed something?
I did an entire car in flake, took my 13 gallons , still had texture, but man I loved having that effect on my car. Fonzie is right, dont do it, unless you KNOW it is what you want
Ok I have an honest question, if I want flakes but don't care how the car feels to touch, does it matter if there's a bit of texture from the flakes? Is it fine to just leave it as that? Like what are the actual downsides of the texture the flakes create? Would it make the paintjob less durable or what?
I have a crazy idea, mix all the blue pearls micro flakes, dips, etc and see if it can actually turn out good, I wanna see if micro flakes can do anything worthwhile lol
i don't understand why you don't just lightly sand it before putting on a glossy top coat. in the epoxy world that is exactly what someone does between every layer if they want a super glossy top coat at the end.

I've got an idea for you! Try to recreate the color of bismuth crystals. I've never seen it before and it could look very cool on a car.

I used the blue microflake on chrome trim so it was pretty affordable. Full cars, definitely not. Really cool end result with the blue!

I dont think DYC topcoat is sandable
Even if the dip is sandable you dont sand metallic flakes because they will lose the color and just be silver

You only need one layer of varnish if you properly control the film weight of your initial paint layers.

You can always use polish sane paper to give it a smoother finish and polish it from there

Ok I have an honest question, if I want flakes but don't care how the car feels to touch, does it matter if there's a bit of texture from the flakes? Is it fine to just leave it as that? Like what are the actual downsides of the texture the flakes create?
Would it make the paintjob less durable or what?
I have a crazy idea, mix all the blue pearls micro flakes, dips, etc and see if it can actually turn out good, I wanna see if micro flakes can do anything worthwhile lol

Could be worth it if you like the color of your paint, then just use a clear flake layer and go keep going over it with clear.

i don't understand why you don't just lightly sand it before putting on a glossy top coat. in the epoxy world that is exactly what someone does between every layer if they want a super glossy top coat at the end.
