  • Could this 35hp diesel powered circular chop saw be the most dangerous way to cut firewood?
    Old belt driven chop saw it n our Massey Ferguson 135 for cutting firewood.

    Had a neighbor years ago who was using a buzz saw on a 9N and lost a hand! Grand dad had one for his 9N used it every year since he bought it new without an accident! I used it with him and he drilled safety in my head! I respected as I could see what it did to wood!

    I never saw a buzzsaw before, but true story. My wife's grandfather came back from the WWI fighting in France. He lived on a farm in New Haven, Indiana working on his father in laws farm. One day after lunch, the guys went outside to cut cordwood for the cooking stove. The blade spun off the buzzsaw, hit him in the face and shoulder and killed him instantly. This event occurred in 1922. My mother in law was 2 y.o. at the time, and her sister was only 2 days old. They lost their father that day. Mother in law turned 100 in year 2020, and died in Nov. 2020, her younger sister just passed away in 2021 at age 98.

    Seeing the assistant swinging all over the place I guess that's why a circular saw it's a one-man job

    Every other farmer I knew growing up had a similar one. Ours was free-standing. When I was a little kid, we ran it with our Farmall Cub. But people used gas engines too. At least yours has a guard for the blade! Ours didn't. It was only dangerous if you didn't pay attention or if you let it get dull.

      Yes they’d get a little sketchy when the blade got dull, I remember they would start to heat up and the hole thing would start wobbling. Just like most equipment it’s only as dangerous as the person using it. Thanks for watching.

      @@macfarms Yours is dull now with what I can see. We had a buzz saw but my dad stopped using it around when I was a toddler but I used to help a group of my neighbors cut their wood with their buzz saw. I really wish my dad got ours set up and working because it was way easier than using the chain saw. My neighbors, if I remember correctly from three households would all work cutting down trees into about 6 ft carry lengths or so then we would all work as a team and cut the whole day. Mostly one guy would cut and one guy would catch and we would keep feeding them and help load it into trailers. We could cut an awful lot of wood in one day! We were cutting nothing but maple and the blade on that saw would effortlessly buzz through anything we fed it. Yours really has to work and the chips are so small as well as steam and smoke shows that it is dull. I have seen a few guys that have set up an indexed rig and a grinder to cut out the gullets which yours really needs. They look half of what they should be. I guess years of sharpening had worn your blade down quite a bit.

    • @macfarms
      @macfarms  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      It probably was dull, we do sharpen it occasionally but it’s been a bit neglected I suppose to do infrequent use. We use to cut all our wood with it when I was a kid. and yeah the teeth are getting small on it. Has to be over 50 years old now, the tractor is a 1971 and it’s older than that.

      @@macfarms I always like seeing old pieces of equipment still doing their job. The buzz saw we had was a rolling table design with a guard above and below the saw. As far as I have seen I don't think I have seen one that was designed safer. My grandfather made ours. He was into that kind of thing being that we had a saw mill operation.
      Yes we tend to somewhat neglect old stuff that we have used for years but once you give it a good once over you end up thinking "why didn't I do this ages ago" lol.

    There isn't a thing wrong with using a buzz saw for firewood. If you'd like to see another perspective, feel free to check this out: th-cam.com/video/Dx0wtKf8ZPY/w-d-xo.html Their use is greatly enhanced with the second person to toss into the wood shed or into a trailer/truck. Compared to a lot of other buzz saw videos, this one here is running quite smoothly and the 135 is just purring along like a kitten taking a nap.

    Less dangerous than a chainsaw.

    • @kjmclark
      @kjmclark 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      People really do underestimate the danger of chainsaws. Yes, that spinning blade is an obvious danger. That guy receiving the wood really shouldn't reach across the blade, and they could do a better job of making sure they have good, non-slip footing there. But compare it with a chainsaw - the footing is almost always lousy with a chainsaw, the 'blade' is safer in that it isn't always spinning, but OTOH, it can always kick back toward you, since it can move everywhere. That buzz saw blade isn't going anywhere.
      The problem with a buzz saw is you have to pick up the wood to the saw. But the benefit is that that blade will last a lifetime.

      I got one last year out Craig's list. Look in farm equipment salvage yards. I doubt they're making any new ones, given the liability.

      I know this is a two year old post but there are a few companies that still make cord wood/ buzz saws. Look up" Vermont woodsman buzz saw" the only USA made one or waldo company has them out of Canada. Not cheap but still another tool in the wood arsenal.

      It probably wouldn't be to hard to make one from scratch, the hub would be my biggest concern, I wouldn't fudge or cut corners or try to save money there, use a plenty big jack shaft and enough motor to turn it. Go to cracker barrel and farm shows and take plenty of pictures

    • @macfarms
      @macfarms  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah guys seem to like the UK versions a little better. We bought this one new in 1971, before my time of course, they had a US 135 also but sold it at some point and kept the UK. I think it was mostly because the US we had didn’t have power steering but they always said they thought the UK version was a better tractor. They are tough as nails and don’t burn any fuel, I have to admit though I like the David Brown a little bit better both being from around the same era.

      Yes they are a bit awkward but the 135 isn’t any better, at least if your tall. I’d love to try an 1190 or 1194 Case to see if they are any better.
