dude the hedgehog situation has been WILD this year. we always get a few coins sized ones intermixed with the chanterelles but this year we've come across whole flushes. happy you're finding them!!!

Hedgehogg mushrooms are one of my favorites too. A few times I've been lucky and found some so large that just one is enough for a meal. That's rather fun. I also found and tried a Sarcodon squamosus this year(a small, probably young one), but the taste wasn't to my liking.

I headed out to the coast today. Porchinis are popping they seemed to be a little older tons of mushrooms are growing now out on the coast. I observed several spices. Lobster Honey Porchini Admirable boletes Hedgehog Yellowfoot chantrelles Smiths bolete Web caps (many varietys) Coral mushooms. I'd stay away from the fire truck red ones I saw tho.

I imagine that the microscopic thread like filaments of hyphae Just climbed over and thru it as if it were any other decaying duff in the forest, and decided it was a nice little pocket of moisture to fruit from. The other end of the hyphae is probably attached to tree roots.
We were out on the coast not far from where you are and found hedgehogs and winters and edulis. Felt like were late and early at the same time :D. Def didn't get as many hedgehogs as you did and not that big. Quick question, are the edulis mychorrizal to shore pine and or spruce? We seemed to find them near the shore pines, but I haven't seen data saying they are.
@@garrettwaiss3525 Yes, B. edulis var grandedulis is associated with shore pine. There's a slender more pale variety associated with the spruce, both can be fruiting at the same time on the coast.
Take all those bottoms that are covered with dirt and plant them over by where you live. Didn’t your friend say the other day that he puts the fuzzy bottoms back into the ground so the mycelium can start to spread? What a cool find! Do you think maybe somebody has been cultivating that little area over the years?
@@charmainemrtnz I'm sure they're natural, trying to force a mycorrhizal relationship between trees and fungus is all but impossible. You may get very lucky, but doubtful! Worth a try though. Saprobic mushrooms are much more likely to start from stem butt transfers.
Where would you recommend as a location for a vacation in Washington state that includes a healthy amount of mushroom hunting? I know the water is cold but it seems like being near the beach/coast would also be preferable. A beach near one of the rain forests?
@@oregonsnob31 It really doesn't make a difference, you should watch the video I made called to cut or pluck- how to harvest a mushroom. It doesn't make any difference to the mycelium, but it did get a little excess dirt in my basket. I forgot my knife that day, you got to do what you got to do. All the deer and wildlife that eat mushrooms certainly aren't cutting them.
We get so frustrated by the commercial pickers. We have forest land in that area, that we have developed with trails and camping pads and a garden for our kids and grandkids. The commercial pickers will walk right past your no trespassing signs, around your forest gates, and sweep your property clean. It breaks our hearts.
So other than keeping some of the dirt out of ur basket, what's the reason to use a knife instead of , say pinching or tearing. I mean if your not selling them, I get they look better using a knife.
@@dustinadair7893 nope! Just about the safest mushroom you can find. All of the mushrooms with cream-colored teeth are edible. In fact, all "tooth-gill" mushrooms are edible.
Have you ever had the Hudnum olympicum? I found a big flush of them last year. One was the size of my face. I didn’t like the taste of them as much as my other finds that day. But I would like to go hunting for the other hedgehogs to see if smaller is better. Thanks for the inspiration and asmr. Can’t get back out to the coast till mid November. Sure wish I could teleport.
@@editadenic6204 I've never found one on me in Western Washington in all my life. East of the Rockies they can be a real problem, my dad lives in Minnesota and we would get ticks in the summer playing in the woods. The practically non-existent here except for sometimes on wild game.

@@Antler_addict Oh yeah I just picked that large Boletus smithii So that once I scrambled up that little hill I could show it on video. It's not a desired edible even in prime condition. I often mention in my videos about safety concerning eating rotten mushrooms, one of the main causes of mushroom poisoning is eating rotten or bacterial fungi. I guess the part where you said "allot" of them. I didn't collect anything that was past its prime.
You provide great content Aaron, much of which none other up here does & we as your followers greatly appreciate. You have mentioned bug infested mushrooms that aren't worth picking & shown others that were shriveled, big & past their prime & you left them behind. I saw you picking dark, bug chewed, brittle mushrooms &... to me, personally, I would not trust them. You are clearly more advanced than us followers Aaron. That's why we follow & learn from you. The timing is good, I have not slept for two days naturally. I have the option of a small test-flight, the hybrids on the left are novel ..Pink Pan X Psilocybe allenii. On the right, two Psilocybe allenii, the original genetic with black annulus (ring) around the stipe (stem). The Pink Pans were strong, these may be less so, yet stronger than Psilocybe allenii (prolific on woodchips). 3.8 grams fresh, is approximately 0.38 grams dry. The first time I try hybrids, I take 0.3 grams dry, especially with ..ALL the genetics we have, these are stronger than the most common species, Psilocybe cubensis (the kind most commonly available for purchase). I definitely feel something already (complete relief from recent spinal injury), am not sure which compound is doing this, likely Serotonin. Like a brand new back, makes keeping a correct posture easier.

Just found some big hedgehogs in nearly the same area on 10/11. Hadn't ever found that many before. Great Fall mushroom season!

I found a decent amount of yellow foot yesterday in kitsap. Just seemingly an early year for a lot of mushrooms.

I pick between 10-20 lbs hedgehogs every year on a specifik spot thats like 30 kvm big pretty close to my house in Sweden
I found a ton of giant lobsters today all way past their prime. Found some nice chants too. Right on the Washington coast.

That can work. But it has to be in a environment with the right trees to associate with and such.
