- It's been a hot and dry summer here in the Pacific Northwest, but that's not stopping the wild edible mushrooms from popping up. Some of the most sought-after wild edible mushrooms can be found right now if you know where to look and what they look like. Aaron Hilliard, vice president of the Kitsap peninsula mycological Society, takes us on a jaunt into the forest to discover the delicious wild fungi that can be found in July and August of 2023.
Golden chanterelle mushrooms are some of the most popular wild edibles in the world, and they're fruiting right now in large numbers, but they can be kind of tough to spot. Watch this video to learn what they look like and how to spot them. Also a strange symbiotic relationship between a host and a parasitic mushroom creates a really exotic looking and delicious wild edible mushroom known as the lobster mushroom. I found both of these growing on the same trail this week.
Aaron Hilliard is a mushroom enthusiast from way back and continues to make videos here for mushroom Wonderland to showcase all of the amazing fun guys that grow in the gorgeous forests of the Pacific Northwest. Make sure to hit subscribe and ding the notification bell so you can be notified as to when new videos are dropping. Whether you're a mushroom enthusiast, someone who just likes to forage wild food, or someone who loves the ASMR of a beautiful forest, these are the videos for you.

Kool! 😃 This makes me want to miss my Doctors appointment this morning & head to the woods for a foray.
I've found several matsutake and boletes in the last week. Crazy to see them pop up when the soil is so dry and dusty!
As someone who lives on a good chunk of land in North Bend, these videos are great! Headed out to the PCT and middle fork this weekend because I've picked everything to eat at my home now!! It's been a good year!
Wow! The chanterelles, beautiful!Found hedgehogs in NW Pennsylvania this morning. Always look forward to your videos. Great info Aaron!✌️
Awesome , thank you & Gunnar and who is the other fella ? Love your walks ! 👍😊

I live in Indiana and wonder when they pop here. I love the hunt it's soo fun when you find them because they are so delicious and they are FREE and that's the best part.
Your video reminded me to go check some of my spots today. No chantarelles or lobsters but I did find some Agaricus Augustus so I'm not too sad.
One of the best
That's so interesting that chants are primarily fall mushrooms in the PNW. I've only lived in the Midwest and East Coast but just kind of figure they were a height-of-summer thing everywhere!
The PNW is _very_ dry in the summer -- much drier than the Midwest and East Coast. Too dry for mushrooms, except for very near the coast, where low clouds come in off the ocean. Late fall - spring is our rainy season.
. Thank you for sharing your walks , experiences, and mushroom knowledge. Ghost pipes at 16:18.
Aaron. Learning so much from you. I've been watching for awhile now, since the OG documentary. Motivated to forage, grow and connect... thanks so much. There are a few people I've been watching around the world, along with Mushroom Wonderland and it is safe to say I've got the myco bug & kinda have had it for 30yrs but was flying solo and not learning very much... infact, I thought it to complicated to learn but today I can follow along with this episode and I'm not completely clueless anymore and of course I wanna know more. 🙏
I love that!! Thanks for always supporting me!
Tofu and chanterelle tacos for breakfast. Long Beach peninsula.
Witchy!!! Haha 🤣🧚♀️
I’m a witch!! I love mushroom dyes 🧚♀️ and lobster is so cool makes pink or orange depending on pH super fun
Another great episode! Thanks for all the info 🎉
I am near Graham, WA! We should do a hike sometime! I have a few nice spots for Chanterelles and lobsters. 😎
Got to be right over on the coast this time of year, get those drizzly, morning low clouds.
Great video. Yes keep doing cooking videos. I don’t even like cooking but I like foraging and I enjoyed this video. Keep it up 👍
Awesome thank you
Thanks for another great episode. Good to see Gunner out on the trail!
Aaron thanks for your videos,I have been picking all my life but always enjoy your videos, keep up the good work
been finding my first patches of chanterelle in quebec , love yours vids as always man !
So excited to get out this weekend and see what is popping up in my area. :)
Good video Aaron
Super stankie, that's the good stuff. 😂 Keep up the great work, love your videos.
I love earthy foragers, I’m in ❤
nice. Thank you!!
Dang, you hit the motherlode of chanterelles! Are you close to the coast range where you are foraging?
No, inland Puget sound, couple hours from the coast. Every summer we have a flush of them but this year is exceptionally good. If you have a known chanterelle patch go check on it, you might be surprised!
Copy that
Geez how da hell do you remember all that stuff. My little pea brain can remember one though Morel.
❤
Your area is at least a month ahead of us here in north Idaho. I hope you think about making a video on what, how and which mushrooms make a good soup. Looking forward to learning new ways to eat mushrooms. Great video...

Aaron do you know if there are lobster mushrooms in Colorado?
Yes! I've seen them in Telluride.
@@mushroomwonderland1 Awesome thanks bud!
I'm sorry , I have tried numerous times to sign up on Patreon for you , But it keeps saying I've been disabled ! Is there another way I can be a member? 😕
I know some spots where there are tons of russula brevipes but I never see any lobsters :(
Knock on fungi, I just found one today. Was so excited I forgot to look for more. Going back tomorrow.
I found a tapinella atrotomentosa yesterday, first one ever, but found inconsistent info on its edibility. Could you please clarify if it’s edible or not? And have you tried one/ can you comment on it’s taste and consistency? Thanks so much Aaron @MushroomWonderland
I have never eaten one but in parts of Europe they eat them pretty regularly, it's non-toxic but people don't forage and eat them here in the States, I'm not sure why.
@@mushroomwonderland1thank you! I think I’ll sauté it up and try a bite 🙂
@@GuardianAngelWatcher come back to the comments let me know how it tastes!
@@mushroomwonderland1 absolutely 👍🏼
@@GuardianAngelWatcher I didn’t think it was edible, others in the roll rim family are quite toxic afaik. Magical as a dyer though! Hope you’re feeling fine!!
