Foraging Wild Mushrooms with a Mycologist- Sidnee Obersingleton

- In this video Aaron Hilliard, VP of the Kitsap Peninsula Mycological Society and Mushroom Wonderland creator, takes a walk into a beautiful forest in the Pacific Northwest with a mycologist from Eugene, OR- Sidnee Obersingleton. He runs a laboratory at the University of Oregon where he studies the fungal associations with leaf cutter ants, among other special interest projects. He is also on the leading edge of 'fluorescent microscopy,' a fairly new science. And he is great at mushroom identification, which you will see in this video.
If you are anyone in the mycological community you have surely heard his name thrown around, and he is quite popular in the Identification groups on Facebook.
I was honored to walk and find about a dozen species of mushrooms growing wild, and to get Sidnee to describe and talk about them all. We talk about everything from super common tree conchs to quite rare edible and medicinal delicacies like Reishi and Lions mane mushrooms.

I've been with you since the beginning I was looking for mushrooming in PNW when I got your first video I know it was the first because it was the only one from mushroom wonderland. I literally go whoo hoo everytime you post new video. So thankful you are doing this took me a couple of years to get a good PNW channel and I am grateful for you.

Yeah we got lucky! Yeah that's typically not that busy of a trail. There happened to be a school class full of students walking behind us that day which was difficult because they are so loud!

Find Lions Mane in Idaho on Douglas Fir trees during hunting season, always watching for the round white patches... the moving ones are Deer and Elk, the ones that don't are mushrooms!

I find it crazier and crazier the more I learn about fungus how much are edible. Can’t believe I grew up scared to eat or even touch most mushrooms now I look at them and my mouth waters.

Loved this one! My first hericium find was a log that had erinaceus and coralloides and I was so confused! I know exactly where that log is, not sure you can DM on youtube and not sure if its useful to study buut Ill totally share the spot with you. Anyway keep up the good work! Great episode! I have been scared to taste guttate.Is it safe in most cases? What about bleeding tooth?
Yes I would say safe in most cases, and the Bleeding tooth (Hydnellum peckii) has a peppery guttation. I lick one of those in, I think, last years 'December Foraging' video.
This makes me wanna try growing russula brevipes and hypomyces lactiflorum separately on agar, and see if I can get the hypomyces to infect the russula mycelium

Damn it's crazy to me someone couldn't tell the difference between R brevipes and H lactifluorum, let alone a whole group of people! H lactifluorum literally smells like a decomposing aquarium and R brevipes tastes buttery. Completely different texture as well.

Mushrooms of British columbia, mushrooms of the redwood Coast, and mushrooms of cascadia are my top suggestions. They are all good and relevant here in the pnw. 🍄❤️

It's to help differentiate the species. There's not enough common names for all the mushrooms. It works fine with the utmost common of mushrooms, but when you want to dive deeper and know what those other strange mushrooms are, most of them don't have common names, and even if they did they would vary regionally, which would make them truly difficult to actually know what you had.
@@mushroomwonderland1 ok thanks. That's what I'm talking about! A good explanation! Lots of channels don't even answer questions. So when someone discovers a species they get to name it. Well in the early days of discovery they could I'm not sure about now. Can you and wouldn't it be fun then to come up with the common name if one doesn't exist yet for that species?

@@jellycream1964 yeah technically whoever publishes a good paper about a new species could give it a new name, provided somewhere deep in the literature there wasn't already a name given. If it turns out somebody had already described a species and named it in literature somewhere, the name reverts back to the old name. New names should be named after morphological features rather than after a person, because it really helps to describe the mushroom. As far as common names, you could assign a new common name to any mushroom, even a very popular mushroom, because there are really no rules about common names. It's just a matter of if it gets widely accepted or not. So give it a try!

What a noisy place. Nothing like headin out to the woods to listen to city folk tainting nature.
Yeah that place is normally super quiet, but of course the day of filming there's a class down in the forest and a bunch of construction work going on nearby. That was difficult.

Yeah they can be used for gut health, which can definitely make an impact on Crohn's disease.
