      You are sooooo right!!!! My neighbor cut down about 20 of our trees. He thought they were his. We had a survey done and that’s how we found out. No compensation, no new trees, he didn’t even apologize to me. One day I was walking about a foot from the property line (because he mowed over the property line) he called the police on me ……

Turns out the beams were on my friends' property! We didnt confront them, but told an old couple they talked to what we had found. They were out moving the beams that afternoon. A construction company I worked for in the past leased a large lot of land from the city for a new storage yard/office. There were lots of old growth trees there and they were specifically told not to remove ANY trees. They removed something like 60 trees. The city found out and imposed fines close to a half million dollars as well as forcing them to replace the removed trees with juvenile/mature trees, not saplings. They learned their lesson the hard way.

    Years ago in Brisbane Australia, a family on Coronation Drive cut down several 30- 40 foot trees on the riverbank to get a better view. As well as the fines imposed, the council erected a huge 40 ft tall bill board, which explained it would stay in place until the newly planted saplings reached the same height as those cut down. It decimated the value of the property in the street, and was removed once the offenders sold up and left.

    In some parts of Australia, people who cut down/poisoned trees also had huge billboards put up right across their view saying "These trees have been wilfully destroyed - council has a zero-tolerance on such actions". This damages their view and their property values much more than the trees did. It happened a couple of times, got in the news, then people stopped doing it because they knew they'd lose more than if they just left the trees alone.

When you think of what it would cost to pay hospital bills (OR burial costs and law suit awards for public endangerment, loss of car, family members OR somebodies house downslope, costs to bring in crews and heavy equipment to clear a landslide off of a road and dig out anyone accidentally caught in said slide...This fine wouldn't begin to cover it.) Several years ago, I had land in East Northern Washington which was surrounded by State land. We came back to the property one year to find lands bordering our property to be completely clear cut. It was dreadful, to say the least at what loggers had done... but upon closer inspection, we discovered several old growth trees along the inside of our property lines had also been harvested. We learned that EACH tree (regardless of size) was worth $10,000 in civil fines against both the state and the logging company. In all, over 40 trees had either been harvested or damaged. We sued, and the State settled for an "undisclosed amount". Let's just say the number described in this video doesn't surprise me in the least.

    • @maryannkom299

      I hope that does mean that those who cut down the old growth,still made a profit despite paying the fines. Oil companies pay fines all the time when they break the rules. After thinking about it, I'm actually in the cities side. The slopes are steep, the region is rainy, and there's a major highway at the bottom. If a landslide happens, because there's no trees to give support to the hill, causing the highway to be blocked off. Worst case scenario theres casualties involved. All for a better view. 😒

    • @WaterspoutsOfTheDeep
      @WaterspoutsOfTheDeep 6 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      It's a developed nation. If the slop is in danger of a landslide it should be reinforced to say the least. Try driving through the rocky mountains you see all over slops all rock no trees and it's reinforced with netting and all sorts of stuff. A harsh penalty because the "trees prevent the whole slop from a landslide" is absurd and actually shows incompetence on part of the city.
      I'm 100% with the landowners they paid a lot to get those houses with the views. They are just some damn trees a few feet from their backyard. The whole thing is absurd. This isn't a whole acre of trees being cut down. The whole thing is so absurd it's not even funny.

      Waterspouts - you know nothing of the area. It has landslides every year. These numb nuts decided their view was more important than the road below it - which they probably drive on daily. The trees are there to hold up the soil on the hillside. Divine justice would be for their section of the hill to slide and take their precious homes with it.

      Waterspouts - you aren't even from here and you think you know all about the topography and the geology of the area? LOL I am from here, I've had to detour around landslides on that road, along with 25000 others per day. They cut trees not on their property to improve their view because they felt it was OK to trespass and destroy property that was not theirs. They thought the city would give them a small fine and they would have the view. I'm for the Brisbane Australia solution here - erect a barrier that keeps them from seeing the view until the replacement trees are back up to that height. Plus the fine.

Because if the slop needed that much reinforcement then the city is highly negligent putting its population at risk like that. In Canada we have sheer slops with no trees and all rocks that have heavily reinforced through the rocky mountains to protect people traveling on the roads. Let me remind you these trees arent being pulled out, the roots are still there and they were wild in the first place meaning more will grow and many of those stumps can still be alive and grow shoots. Also it's largely brush that prevents erosion of slops not trees.

    • @spuriouseffect
      @spuriouseffect 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Waterspouts of the deep..... We aren't talking about slopes made of rock. We are talking about slopes that are prone to landslide without reinforcement. The trees are the reinforcement. Cut down the trees, the roots die, and a landslide may or may not happen, but if it does it costs millions to reinforce. Get it? Good.

    • @WaterspoutsOfTheDeep
      @WaterspoutsOfTheDeep 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Spurious Effect Clearly you don't get it. Do you know what an argument is? If you think you just gave any valid ones aside from cost then you are seriously mistaken. The cost is irrelevant it's the governments obligation. Otherwise it wouldn't be lawful to build residences there if it was at such a risk.

      Cutting the trees down, roots die the soil has nothing to hold on to down it comes.
      Cutting down too many trees is why you need permission to build. If too many go away you destabilize the ground.
      If you don’t know what I’m talking about look at what happened on highway 99 in the late 80’s early 90’s to an area just past Fremont. It now has apartment buildings in its place but it once had homes. Or look at what happened at carkeek Park around the mid to late 90’s. Where some people did the same thing and a mud slide happened.

    • @nuttym
      @nuttym 6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Richard Carroll grass alone will not stop a landslide/mudslide. You need plants with deep enough roots that they penetrate the clay layer. Where I live hillsides on rainy years will colaspe taking grass and small vegetation with it. Only the hills with trees and shrubs as well as grass and small vegetation will stand up... If someone cut a large amount of trees n a single area we would absolutely have a destabilization issue.

    Some people may think the punishment was to harsh and, if you don't believe that its a safety thing. A company cut a bunch of trees on a hill like that one because they decided to do t work before there was an agreement, then they'd _have_ to be paid. While the famiy fought them in court, a mudslide caused by the trees being cut down blocked the river...which was the towns main water source. The company ended up paying millions in damages before going bankrupt, and the lawyer that was helping the family, also happened to be the city's lawyer. The company's owner had to pay to replace their trees and repair the damage from the mudslide which took half their back yard with it.

But who knows? In a different scenario, some city elsewhere may say it was OK and designate what trees would be allowed to cut down as long as the owners paid for it. Best to inquire before taking on any action.

    My home is a town home, so it shares one wall with the neighbors. They moved in about one year ago. They have two boys that trash the trees in the neighborhood by pulling on the branches, ripping the leaves off, over and over, leaving a mess of leaves and sticks on the floor. They shoved a large stick into the bush in front of my window and left it there and the mom stands there not caring. And that's just in the common areas. All the home owners have to pay $300 a month in HOA dues to maintain the common areas that we all share a part in, that includes bush trimmings, new plants, irrigation, cutting the grass, leaf blowing, edging, and that's just landscaping, there's also the community pool that is maintained. But anyway, I don't think the renters pay HOA dues. HOA fees are the owner's responsibility. So these renters have no regard for the amount of work and money it takes to maintain the community.
    I'll tell you something really bothersome. I have a fully mature lemon tree in my backyard. Over many years, the branches grew long and dangled over the property line, over the fence. The owner next door didn't mind the dangling branches so there they remained. When we met the new neighbors (the renters), we told them they can take whatever lemons are on their side. Then one day, as I'm passing by the window in my house, I see my tree being violently yanked. So I tell the children over the fence to twist the lemons off, not to pull on it. The way the kids were pulling on it looked like they were playing a tug of war. Time passed and I am sitting at my kitchen table looking out my window at the lemon tree hoping to see a hummingbird on my humming bird feeder, and that's when I notice the rude aunt of the two boys reaching over the fence into my yard plucking lemons. That wasn't part of the deal. She reached so far in I saw the side of her face. She must have stood on something to reach over and into my tree because my yard is much higher than theirs. Their yard sits at a much lower elevation.
    Then the straw that broke the camel's back. Yesterday, those kids do it again, they are pulling the lemon tree branches down into their yard, shaking the entire tree. So I look over the fence and see the two boys, the grandmother, and their aunt this time. I ask them to please not to pull on the branches, please twist the lemons. The aunt was rude, she scowled at me and ignored me. Then the kids said "yeah yeah we know, twist" in a mocking tone. And the grandmother holding a big bowl of lemons just smiled and said something in Hindu (because they are Indian), but she eventually acknowledged what I said. After that, she continued to pull the branches down and twisted the lemons.
    For the rest of the day it bothered me. I offer my lemons which grow in abundance on their side because of the long dangling branches, yet the boys are destructive, I've told them nicely, and their aunt that's staying with the renters is totally rude yet she thinks she's intitled to my lemons over the fence from my property.
    So I start reading about property line laws and trees. I find out that if this is brought up to the HOA, then they would write a citation to the home owner. I wouldn't want that because I know the owner and her daughter, I have their numbers. If it escalated, the owner might ask me to cut my tree to the property boundary line, and if I didn't comply, they would do it. All these options stirred in mind until I discovered that the long dangling branches should be pruned, all the energy and nutrients that the tree absorbs are going towards those dangling tree limbs where clusters of fruit are instead of producing more foliage and branches in the rest of the tree! Pruning those long dangling tree limbs was what I should have done a long time ago. And the time to prune was now! It must be after winter but before summer (spring). So immediately after reading how to prune at 2am while everyone was asleep, I decided to prune all the branches that hung over the property line and the entire time I felt great because this is so beneficial for my tree! Plus those kids won't be able to reach the branches to pull on anymore! As I look out my window at my tree, I see it looks more balanced, it's planted far enough away from the fence so the tree doesn't look like its missing a chunk. It looks great. And to be honest, it never felt right allowing my tree to intrude into someone else's property. I only let the tree branches dangle because I thought the neighbor (Owner) might see it as rude to take it away, but when she moved out she told me she doesn't even like lemons 🤣. I hope the neighbors (renters) get the hint that my lemon offer does not stand anymore.

    Cant the city have kept these trees trimmed to keep property prices up? Tax payers being owned by the tax man.

      Why would you make taxpayers pay for someone else's property value. They chose to build/buy their house there knowing full well that there were trees.

    I cant imagine they cut those trees down by themselves, they likely hired a service. Any service that cuts down any tree with out CLEAR verification of OWNERSHIP/RIGHTS is ALSO LIABLE. Services would START checking these things FIRST if they were held responsible financially for the damage... take out the ones doing the damage and the trees dont get cut.

    The top of the list of offences for me boils down to the words LAND SLIDE.
    And it looks like they left all that wood to rot as well.

    I think it was not emphasized well enough. The reporter's final,,, "and they help hold up these steeper slopes." The trees do much more than 'help'. Without the trees the slopes WILL slide down onto the highway. Trees are essential for holding a slope in place. Annnnd unmentioned,, the other price that will be paid by the homeowners,,, noise. Highway? Trees absorb tremendous amounts of noise. Sooo,, 440,000 dollars, a better view, and lots of highway noise. Sounds like a dumb bargain to me.

    Lesson here: anonymously pay someone in cash to cut down that shit for you and deny having anything to do with it when accused. Or, have someone in your family who does not live there do it under cover of darkness with lookouts. Use an electric, battery powered chainsaw for quick get-away and less noise.

    Was anyone hired to cut the trees? Should there be fines as well for tree service businesses that did the cutting? I think so. Good for Seattle!!!
