Evening materia now as a reward in event exchange for green lanterns... only 5 bits, but better than nothing.
A few extra tips :
1- Base substats are important. A materia with 4 substats unlocked at lvl1 has more potential to grow more stats than a materia with 1 or 2 substats unlocked at lvl1 . Still its RNG so you might end up with a worse materia.
2- Esunas and ruinras should be considered "stat sticks" so you need to look for stat % MORE than the stars. A 5 stars esuna is doing almost the exact same thing as a 1 star esuna (it has less healing potency but still it heals almost nothing so it has no value in that regard). Aim for full % and dont use them at 5stars if flat stats "just cause has better rank".
3- Best value for getting exp fodder is to craft ruin materia at guaranteed 2stars (shortest/easiest to craft+gives same exp than any other materia) . I woudn't ever bother using purple mats on those because you'll end up crafting so many of those that you'll most likely have tons of good substats (just make sure you check their stats before using them as fodder).
4- Make sure you are using Chocobo expeditions on places where you get purple mats.
5- A lvl 2,and probably 1 star materia can also upgrade to a 5 stars. Dont be afraid to upgrade to 5/10 everything IF you got the mats (you'll need to farm, but its not that hard/stamina consuming unless you decide to upgrade absolutely everything). Even a flat/bad rank 1 materia can be useful for raw damage (and outdps lesser rank materias) IF you are lucky enough to get a rarity upgrade.
6- Aim for the materias you need the most first, but keep in mind your weapons available. For instance you can beat Shiva Very Hard just with Zack+Glenn's free weapons from Ifrit so dont go nuts crafting fires if thats your only goal. Focus on what you need to beat now or in near future (for instance the next ranking event). If you dont know what to craft/dont need anything right now go for ruin materias for exp.
7- Dont go crazy with the crafting if you are casual/cant play too much daily. This system is RNG upon RNG upon RNG. I've seen people with +3000 total crafted materia and others with less than 200. Depending on how much you are grinding this you might just want to upgrade absolutely everything (1 stars included) just to get a few 4/5 stars. Its a bit of a waste of resources but its way better than just having 0 rank4 materias cause you are waiting for full % stats before upgrading.

If you upgrade a 1* materia and get a rare 2* upgrade... what's the point of doing that? You can't upgrade that to a 3* and all 2* materia sucks.
@@Greensky02 You can upgrade a 2* straight to 4* or even 5*. I guess the same can happen to a 1*.
Also as previously stated only elemental damage materia (and Cure to a lesser extent) are useful at high stars. The other ones (esunas, ruins AND buffs/debuffs that I forgot to mention before) only get a very very tiny upgrade thats not even worth. Thats why all those materias work better as a pure stat boost for your character and thats why a good full % *2 materia is better than *5 assuming it has flat stats.
@@St8rGene Ahh ok. I didn't realize that was possible to scale up 3 to 4 ranks at once. Only ever had a 3 star go to a 4 star so far.

Great points. Note that the potency bonus on higher stars does not apply if your maim weapondoes more damage (if it's at a sufficient OB level, in which case materias are just stat sticks/sigil breakers)
The thing I really like about your content break downs is anyone can follow along. The first video I saw of yours taught the importance of % vs flat and with that easy to understand explanation I found myself just understanding materia better than before. Now seeing this video it has helped give evidence and an additional resource my own ideas on 2 v 3 v 4 v 5 concepts vs just seeking any rarity % materia.

Thanks man there were a couple of things I did not know.
My experience is, of course, a small sample size, but I usually use only 2 boosting ingredients, and consequently have gotten more 4 and a few 5 stars that way. Sometimes I use larger numbers of boosters, and the rate increases, but I can't sustain that expenditure. The sheer volume of my crafting has, I believe, allowed me the chance to reap gains that have a low percentage chance to occur.
Fast materia like Ruins and Breach and Mana Breach help a lot with volume.
Co-op and the Synth bonus are currently well aligned for Mana Breach production, with the max XP bonus for the Wind synth solo encounter, and the Scorpion in co-op giving Earth crystals.
Or skip Wind and just go Barrier, or some of each like I do.
I craft Cures before I crash out for the night, to use a few Light + Fire + Ice when the extremely long Cure time isn't a problem.
Five slots, naturally. I even bought some materia storage.
Besides using the enhancement materials I try to remember to do the long ones over night to save on mats for shorter ones. I have two 4* Cura and several good 3* rolls from that without using anything but blues or 2 purple.
A lot of this materia is great for stats even if the skill doesn’t work out. I have a Blizzard Blow with 6% MATK that I never would have imagined would end up in builds but it does.

After watching this I didnt know about the ruin to make 3 stars, tried it noticed one of the ruins was going to take 50 mins got excited used a book mark and I got my first 5 star! Lol flat stats but still THEY ARE OUT THERE! Thanks for the video and keep up the good work Octo!

Important Information for 5 Star Materia! Hey i have an interesting addition to your video that probably hardly anyone knows. I had 3 pieces of 3 star Ruin Blow X and upgraded them because there is a possibility that the rarity will increase as you explain in your video. So first materia nothing, second materia nothing, but third materia... bingo! Rarity upgraded, but here it comes, it has been upgraded to a 5 star!!! A 3 star materia has been upgraded to a 5 star materia! I couldn't believe my eyes, I actually thought that a 3 star materia would then be upgraded to the next rare level, a 4 star materia, at least that's how it's always been for me so far. Well, of course I was incredibly happy and now I/we know that it is possible for a 3 star to become a 5 star, probably very rare, at least I assume but definitely good to know! Because that is of course another reason to upgrade all or as many 3 star materia's as possible. So now the community knows and can make the best of it! I pretty much synthesize through my work night. Right now I am aiming to have at least two 3-star materia, with three percentage based substats, for both regular and blow, for every materia. Almost done with the ruin materia, and about a third of the way done with the elemental materia. Long process but its kind of fun. Some 4 star gems in there too.
11:00 if you have a lots of basic materials and crafting elements I wouldn't waste high quality materials on ruins actually, it takes so little time to craft them you can actually just rinse and repeat during like 1 or 2 days with very little investment (except checking your game every now and then) and guaranted yourself a 4 stars lf each.
I did this for like a week and I have every ruin/ruin blow at 4 stars and didn't use 4 stars material.
I keep high quality materials for materka that takes a long time to craft like healing spells and buffing/debuffing spells.
I got one 5* but it’s all flat stat… RNG is excruciating on this one.
No 5 stars yet and i'm synthezing non stop with materials, I know you guys are lying to me and they don't exist 😂

Great video! Maybe a simple question but, how did you get so many gold synthesis materials? I've been doing all the events and checking the shops and obtaining what I can through medal exchange purchases, but definitely don't have access to as many gold synthesis material as you do. Are you getting them mainly through the Crisis dungeons at this point?

I got a 5 star aerora through upgrade and a 5 water blow through synthesis. Hoping i can get a 5 star cura or earth materia next
Actually it wasn’t until recently that I started spamming synthesis after I stocked up on a lot of 5 star materials. In the end I got a bunch of 4-star materia and 3 5-star materia (f2p player here). The 3 materia are Blizzara Blow, Thundara, and Healing Esuna for Poison
Performed 1,727 syntheses with 2 5* native (ruin x and fira) and 13 4* (2 with rarity upgrade)
Maybe I’m commenting to early - so the stats each materia gives only apply for the materia skill or does it also affect other skills?
Loved the video. Started restructuring all my materias. I still think 5 star mat are a fiction. Never seen one.
My take on material crafting is that you need all types of material to start off with. Keep the decent 2* with good stats and when you craft 3* or higher, you can replace them. Is better to have material to use on builds and boss then nothing and try to craft something fast .....

another thing to note, the % stats given by higher rank materia are FAR better than lower rank materia
I have only ever rolled a single Rank 5 Materia, it came out the gate with MATK +3.8% (it was phisical materia unfortunatly)
Just got a five star X and O ruinra whilst watching this so I'm probably done now as far as RNG goes. F2P 4 total. A Cura an Aeroa and the two I just mentioned.
I m a little bit confused with the stat exemple/calculation. Why do you add the 5% matk on the overall matk from the character ? To me it's only applied on base stats. Here you add it to the overall already buffed stats from other equipments and materia.
My thought, Stats still are better as you apply this on every attack/magic which use it (so potentially 3 or more). The potency from the materia only apply for itself. Depending the build but most of the time for dungeon, you need all you skills.

Well guess I'll chime in, day 1 player, I try to have synthesis going as much as possible. I've crafted two 5 stars & got one from upgrading. Two water, one thunder. Decent HP% on the waters, but no MAtk. Thunder I got lucky, 5.1% MAtk, by far my best materia. I have 11 four stars, I just figured it was a numbers game, just keep pumping the out & eventually you'll get something decent.

Max potential increase of a sub stat for every materia is fixed per number of stars:
- 1 star: 0.3% or 1
- 2 stars: 0.6% or 2
- 3 starts: 1.2% or 4
- 4 stars: 1.8% or 6
- 5 stars: 2.4% or 8
What that means - each time you roll a sub-stat, let say a %, the max increase is one of the above %.
Example - if I make 3star materia to level 10, with 3 rolls of Heal %, the max I will get is 3 x 1.2 = 3.6%.
P.S. The video didnt talk about potential of rolling specific substat or increasing a specific substat. There are ways to increase these chances.
I have a 5 star materia with 10% hp bonus. Great for support
I don't have any 5 star but I did get lucky with 2 4star fire blows having decent substats. I have a 3star of something that has 8.1% healing, highest substat by far on any materia I own! I'm close to 1.1k materia made.
Do you use materials ? Only two 4 stars seems like almost impossible low odds.

How do you get enough catalysts to use to try and make the 4 stars? You try and make a couple and run out fairly quickly
Just got my first 5*. Not perfect but usable. Got fog l, took 11 hours 24 minutes
I'm not entirely sure how, but I've played and crafted almost consistently since day 1 and only this week got a 5*. Except I didn't get only one 5*.. I got 4 of them in like 2 days. RNG seemed to like me this week

I’ve been doing 3-10 a day since week 1, and I’ve only gotten 3 4-star materia and 0 5-stars. Either I’ve got terrible RNG (wouldn’t be surprised) or the rates for higher star materia are rough.
I got one 5* aero before this event.. now if I want one wind materia it is always garbage prior to the odds before 🤔

I just got 5 star breach with 7%patk and 5% heal its my first 5 star and did not add sub items. Crafted over 700 materia tho

Hey Octo! quick question regarding rarity. For elemental materias, rarity > stats, I get it. How about ruin materia? we normally don't run it for the damage, just the break effect, so the potency isn't relevent I guess. For this case, is stats > rarity? Or still Rarity > Stats? Thanks in advance.
Rarity is key for better % rolls. But a 3* with good rolls is better to use instead of 4* ruin without.

I just love how almost every single time I make magic materia, it has PATK% instead of MATK, and the Blow ones keep giving me nothing but MATK%. Made about 30 Aerora Blows tonight and not a single one got PATK
So frustrating to have this much opposite damage stats.
Like more than 95% of materia are just crap because of that. What was the purpose ton not have even chance to get atk or magic on materia.
With more than 700 crafts, I only have 5 or 6 materia with stats matching the type they have.
And when you get purple or gold materia, dont expect to have more chance for these stats, you will be disappointed.
@@JurianRaines the opposite stat doesnt necessarily make them crap, specially when talking about the rune breaker materias that fit a special sigil spot. Take Clouds Murasame for example with its triangle sigil breaker slot - your Cloud is physical and you rolled a 4/5* magical triangle with high %patk, put it in that slot for the stat boost to all your damage
@@YuIivee true. But this is really specific for sigil (or esuna). It's like an equipment you are right.
Usually for dmg, you seek the other one and there, you suffer.

I have 9 materia at 4 stars. And none at five. At the moment. But i prefer use some green and blue materia.

Yeah so basically for ruins the stats vs rarity doesn’t matter as much since u only use it for breaking streams, where as elemental id def get the argument where even with flat stats its just better to have a 4* or 5* with flat stats

420 synthesis, I got a 5* Thundaga maybe 100 rolls ago.
I wish I had seen this before I wasted so much material making crappy 2* and 3*. I’ve got a handful of 4* now but the stats leave a lot to be desired.

Am I the only one that plays on a phone and after hitting “equip” accidentally hits “best equipment” because they overlap in their menus? Maybe they should add a confirmation to the best equip.

So... Am I get it right: If I got a 4 Star Materia with flat stats, its almost everytime better then a 3 Star Materia with percentage stats - at least in terms of raw damage/healing?
For the damage one like elements yes. But for Ruinra materia you want to aim for stat % the materia itself won't be doing damage for you during fights.
Ive got 1 5* from synth and 1 5* from upgrading. 1 is meh the other has 5% hp which is okay i guess
These are great; thank you! I was hoping for a tutorial on the materia. Can you go over how to obtain some of those materia in order to synthesize them? For example, while I do have an Esuna (fog), it isn't available for me to synthesize. Maybe there is a simple trick that I'm not aware of.
Look at the recipe it'll tell which crisis dungeon it's from. I'm synthesis menu where you craft look at the bottom right you'll see a toggle button to show you materia you don't have.
Then click on the materia you want. Then to the left you'll see the book and where it's from.

I farm the 3* materials quest & my chocobo farm does the rest. The 4* is from events, co-op shop, and chocobo farm.
